yes, xfce looks kinda like OSX and is a bit faster than gnome. Xubuntu (xfce ubuntu distro) runs well on machines with 128mb ram

an old win98 thinkpad of mine does this too. I think its a firmware issue as it reads DVDs ok but only pressed ones (no +/-rs or rws). With cds it can read rs but not rws. It has been like this since i got it.

yes, delete the linux partition and then using your XP CD's recovery console (hit R around the bit with the EULA) type fixmbr and it will reinstall the xp bootloader over GRUB.

its definately the java that rounds the boxes. On my pda (no java) it loads in like 2 seconds. On IE6 (XP SP2, 2gb RAM, 3.4ghz P4) the rounding takes ages (>8 seconds) and while its doing that i cant scroll.
