...Ehhhh, I would strongly recommend reinstalling SP2, as your computer is incredibly vulnerable now from internet attacks. AVs and firewalls won't protect ya from these.

What I think the problem is is that your computer is overheating--and hence, removing SP2 lowered the usage a tad. Instad, I would reinstall SP2 and see if this is the problem. (try running it again with a fan blowing into the inside of the case).

Thanks.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

I really think the restarts are because your computer is getting too hot inside.

First off, can you double check that all your fans are working.

Secondly, open the case, have a fan blowing air into your computer, and try again.

What happens?

This guide shows how to reformat your computer in case of a severe corruption or a severe malware infection where helpers cannot guarantee the security of your computer.

This guide is for reinstalling XP only. Do not use this guide if you are not reinstalling windows XP. Only use this guide if you are reformatting using the XP cd (not using a 'recovery partition' that some computer manufacturers use)

This guide is 'as is'. There are many circumstances which may change the success of your reformat.

Now then, let's get started:
Before you can reformat, you will need to have the following:

Prerequistes:
1. Your windows XP cd.
2. A means of backing up your most important data. Don't backup everything, the more you backup, the more chance there is that malware will get on your newly formatted computer. You might use another hard drive, some cd roms, or anything that holds data to backup your files.
3. There is a small chance you will need a floppy drive.

First Steps:
1. We need to make sure that your product key is still valid. Otherwise you might not be able to install windows. To do so,

Please go HERE (Microsoft website) using Internet Explorer (NOTE: Do not use Firefox or any other browser as they won't work)

What browser are you curently running?

The problem has to do with how your computer allows cookies, ActiveX and the such.

I would try again using Firefox.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Reackon i should tel the beta people?

I would definitely do so.

Does it stay like this after a reboot?

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Like I've said in the past before, google won't help you find an answer to a specific question that you have, it will only take you to sites like these. From now on, if you're not going to post anything helpful, don't post anything at all.

Did I misread? As for setting up Starcraft, look at this:
http://www.google.com/search?q=starcraft+linux+server

Looks pretty helpful to me. ;)

I don't even know how to start.

And yes, you did ask for a start.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Quiiite good.

Definitely worth watching.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

That's correct.

You cannot run Defender x86 on a 64 bit processor. ;)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

1) Are you completely sure it's a vaild copy?

2) I would try a complete reformat, and then activeate after the reformat.

Hmm, is it wireless?

If so, I would try moving the transmitter closer, etc.

If its not, youre mouse might be broken.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Agreed with the rest of the guys, etc.. :cheesy:

So I guess that quesiton we're asking here is the security worth the lost miliseconds of wait time? lol...

I guess it all depends on what ya do on the computer. If you EVER use it for banking, or stock trading, or anything dealing with money or personal data (SSN, etc) I would DEFINITEly use Firefox the entire time. Some bugs that IE can produce can even read data in FF streams.

Thanks.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Well you really can, it's just not factorable, considering that the battery life definitely wouldn't last the entire movie.

This is the converter (That lasher mentioned) that I use:

http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Hmm, although I bet this has no effect, on who's desktop was the software for the Desktop?

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Obviously. Still, if you're that paranoid about hackers I'm not sure using the internet at all is a good idea:)

In seriousness though, its not just hackers ya worry about. It's mostly malware.

But I know what you're saying. :)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

.. why is that?

To tell ya the truth, I don't know exactly why, but FF has been known to have an intial slowdown when first loading. However, this only occurs when first opening it.

Back to what you were saying, I would aruge that IE7 is still not a good option to to turn to, as it is one of the most targeted browsers on the market. This is due to the level of integration it has with the OS itself (ie, the more integrated it is, the easier it is to hack, etc).

Thanks.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

I'm liking it. :)

Hmm....this really is a longshot, but have you tried contacting Dell. Not usually, but they help sometimes.

Other then that, I don't know what else to tell ya, otehr then wait for somebody else to say something else.

Just so you know' I've placed a copy of this into the Linux forum as well.

Thanks.

EDIT: Here's the other one: http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread54738.html

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Would a registry scn help also?

No, I don't think so. What the performance booster probably did (if it even did anything) was probably clean the registry, which was sort of your problem.

If you want a good overall cleaner, I would recomend CCleneaner.

However, I would first try to access system restore.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Major solution: Uninstall all P2Ps, as nearly all have imbedded software (even if they say "no imbeds", its still imbedded, i promise)

Other then that, ahve you tried system restore?

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

It all depends on a buncha variables (ie distance from server, local internet useage, etc).

Careful though...P2Ps are legal, while sharing copywrite stuff isn't...and we can't help ya if its illegal...

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Hmm, is it still under warranty?

If so, I would send it back/contact their help line. If it is not, I would try to reinstall the software on the player, most likely from the CD.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Winterchase, that's incredible.

Good luck with it all. :)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Sorry, can't help ya with that.

Thread closed--Illegal action.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Ehh....not really.

ALL processors are damaged by excessive heat--just some more then others.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

It will have to be replaced, sadly. ;)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

an old ,pre sp2 disc

Well I'm pretty sure that would work too--as SP2 can be downloaded online.

So you really have an old XP disc? If so, that's what I'd do...

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Have you tried System Restore?

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Twoyorkie, to tell ya the truth, I'm suprised the computer store did not already reformatt the computer.

Do you happen to have your current XP discs? Because if so, I would definitely recommmend reformatting.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Can't agree with ya more aparnesh. ;)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Well said shipwreck.

I second that.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

In conclusion i think it was a good question to ask and i really appreciate the respect shown to me here in this forum.

Nooo, thank you!

I love questions like this.

Thanks again for the rep, and I hope ya stay around here more.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Completely agreed with Xpenetrator.

The short answer is yes for several reasons.

1) The absolutely critical patches (aka 0-day patches) patch vulnerabilities that normal anti-viruses/firewalls etc don't catch, nor protect against.

For example, at another site I belong to, someone found a specific website (not given here for obviosu reasons) that infected the entire computer through simply looking at this certain webpage. No "install option", no nothing. After several experts looked at it, it had to do with how Java configures, and how it loads when first activated. This was something that Java had to start fixing immedeadly.

please consider that there are many antivirus packages, firewalls, rootkillers...blah, blah, etc, etc......

Yep, sure are correct. However, you wanna guess how AntiVirus programs protect their computer? They watch for vulnerabilities, and then patch them after the fact. One such place is MalwareResearch (it's a closed forum). Here, experts disect certain viruses/downloaders/rootkits, etc. And watching on the side are the security companies.

Also on this topic, most AVs and firewalls and such don't block everything. For this very reason, we have some very knowledgeable people who still get infected.

On a last note, there have been instances where unprotected computers hurt the protected ones. One such example was the DDOS attack on CastleCops' website. (CC is one of the leading authorites in malware defense). This attack was armied by zombie bots--in other words, unprotected computers that had been hacked. Even some firewalls are awful. …

[clairification]Downloading the PRO version of Limewire software using the BAISIC softare is illegal.[/clarification]

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

question, is limewire pro a service or just software? If it was software, couldn't you get it off of regula limewire?

Yes. The only benefit that PRO offers (to my knowledge) are faster downloads.

Yes you can do that, which is ironic, but illegal.

Illegal only if he was downloading something copyrighted.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Alrite.

1) Tell me about your problematic computer.

2) Tell me when it stopped working, and if possible, a probable cause.

3) Clarify something. Are you having problems getting online, or are you looking for a new web browser?

Several things.

1) Be sure to have ActiveX enabled when doing visiting the site.

2) possibly turn off any AVs or firewalls when updating.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

That's quite odd. Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling FF?
