Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this could be caused by static--opening up the computer will do this.
And also, by opening it up, you just invalidated your warranty. ;)

Would it be worth using a restore point from a month or so before this problem surfaced to get back to what we had?
That's what I would try first, because if this fixes it, then ya don't need to worry about it too much.
If this doesn't work, I would open up the DeviceManager (Right click MyComputer> Properties> Hardware)
Inside this, look for any ? marks.
Thanks.
Can anyone tell me how I can take a copy of all my e-mail folders beforehand as I have lots of saved messages in folders which I would like to keep.
The best way I can see doing this is to burn them all on a CD(s). If this isn't an option, a flash drive is also a possiblity.
Sorry no one could help you last time. ;)
Thanks.
I actually like IE7 alot too, they finally tabed it, and you can get a preview of the pages you're on.
I can't lie...it's not that bad anymore, and I' ve been known to use it at times.
However, the one thing I still don't like about it are the massive vulerablilties that are present in it. However, that problem's two-fold, 1) it's wayyy to integrated into the system itself to take out, and 2) there are so many users, and because of this, its picked on.
Firefox is only slightly safer then IE7..and this this is mostly because its not as integrated. FF si just as vulernable,, just IE7 still has the majority of people using it, and therefore, thats where all the malware is.

As a major laptop fan myself, as far as I know, I don't think it's possible to replace internal parts on a laptop without some major skills.
If I'm wrong on this, please correct me.
Lastly just keep in mind, by opening your laptop case, you would void your warrenty anyways.
Actually, its probably because of hidden folders and remnants left on the drive.
Every once awhile, enable all hidden folders and clean out all non-necessary items on it.
TheNSS is completely right. Joey., why would you want to know his serial number, other then for illegal reasons?
bh99mh, please do not post your serial number.
Thanks.
Completely agreed with Joeprogrammer.
Moved to corect forum.
Most likely a virus.
Transfered to virus forum.
Hmmm that's a good question.
I know this sounds dumb, but you have it set on "search internet", correct? ;)
I take it this is a software firewall, correct?
If so, I would look in the firewall settings about 'currently blocked' programs and such, and remove it.
If this is a hardware firewall, I would recommend just resetting it.
Yes, Mastertech is corrret on this issue. ;)
Moved. :)
Already posted in correct forum - Virus forum.
And because you have the same problem in multiple forums, I'll be closing this one.
Thanks. :)
Why don't you start a new thread, instead of hijacking this one?
Done. :)
Mike is exactly right.
Moved to Windows forum.

This guide shows how to reformat your computer in case of a severe corruption or a severe malware infection where helpers cannot guarantee the security of your computer.
This guide is for reinstalling XP only. Do not use this guide if you are not reinstalling windows XP. Only use this guide if you are reformatting using the XP cd (not using a 'recovery partition' that some computer manufacturers use)
This guide is 'as is'. There are many circumstances which may change the success of your reformat.
Now then, let's get started:
Before you can reformat, you will need to have the following:
Prerequistes:
1. Your windows XP cd.
2. A means of backing up your most important data. Don't backup everything, the more you backup, the more chance there is that malware will get on your newly formatted computer. You might use another hard drive, some cd roms, or anything that holds data to backup your files.
3. There is a small chance you will need a floppy drive.
First Steps:
1. We need to make sure that your product key is still valid. Otherwise you might not be able to install windows. To do so,
Please go HERE (Microsoft website) using Internet Explorer (NOTE: Do not use Firefox or any other browser as they won't work)
I know that, from the hardware store, you can buy connectors that allow you to install a grounding wire to the power plug.
The part's like $.30 too...;)
Moved.:)
Moved to better location. ;)
Well, truthfully, I would just reformat the computer anyways, regardless if you screwred it up or not. ;)
I would do this because you have no clue what could be on there. For more instructions on how to reformatt, post back.
Thanks. :)
Moved.
Anyway problem solved by capital punishment.
Well said. ;)
Well, my apologies for not being able to fix, it, but I'm happy all's good now.
Sorry about that, we've been backed up lately (for me, its school :)).
Have you looked at the security settings of IE?
Secondly, have you tried resetting the router? This problem happens alot to me when the hardware firewall built in blocks 1 but not the other.
Although you don't need them both, I would recommend keeping them. I use both. :)
Also, be sure you have ActiveX controls enabled before running TrendMicro.
IF that doesn;t work, use a PandaScan.
Finally, if that doesnt work, try a differnet browser.
Also, does rebooting into safe mode work?
That's odd...
I know this probably isn't it, but what anti-viruses are ya running?
I would have your system checked for viruses.
Post in the Virus forum. ;)
Moved.
Sure do. Right click the background>Properties>Screen Saver>Power
In here are a bunch of settings that deal with that.
Thanks. :)
Whoops, misread ;) For getting out of hibernation, try holding the power button, as Dani said below. :)
Not exactly.
Follow these instructions for clearing temp files:
Begin by downloading CCleaner, and specifically choosing the most recent version.
Then, follow these steps:
1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the "My Computer" icon.
3. Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
4. After the new window appears select the "View" tab.
5. Place a checkmark in the checkbox labeled "Display the contents of system folders".
6. Under the "Hidden files and folders" section select the radio button labeled "Show hidden files and folders".
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled "Hide file extensions for known file types".
8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled "Hide protected operating system files". 9. Press the "Apply" button and then the "OK" button and shutdown My Computer.
10. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.
Now, install the program. Open it, and choose the 'Options' tab. Inside, hit the 'Custom' tab, and add the following folders (Note: Not all of these files are on every computer. If one of these isn't present, skip it):
C:\Windows\Temp
C:\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\History
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Cookies
C:\Windows\Prefetch
After doing this, move back to the 'Cleaner' tab, and …
Chris-
Several things.
Just because you selected all hidden folders doesn't mean all the folders. Did you also select system folders?
What takes up much of the room on your hard drive is your System Restore.
Moved.
No cheating at Daniweb. :(
Mine isn't like that...
How is this a spam advert? It's a question with no links.
After I read Marty's post, I found the spam post, and removed all but the question. :)
Guster.
Yonder Mountain
You've tried restarting, right?
Secontly, have you tried using System Restore?
Ronnie Day
Wow...didn't know that.
Thanks Dani. :)
Right click and add the Navigation toolbars. :)
1) First off, AOL is total junk. I think I have liberty in saying this, as I used to subscribe. ;) I would try to get away from it, especially seeing just how much memory and active content it eats up.
2
apart from that I find the browser faster and more stable than both FF and Oprah (FF tends to have trouble displaying 90% of images on a screen, same for O).
NOw, that's very odd. I'm a big FF user, and I've ahrdly ever had any problems with images on any site. Do you have IEView installed? This might be the problem.
TheNNS-
Watch yourself, that's all I have to say...
Several things.
1) Never trust a single anti-virus as proof that you're clean. I hate to be mean, but Norton's not even that good anymore of an AV. I would try downloading several other programs (Ewido, Adaware) and running scans with them. If that doesnt fix anything, post in the virus forum to get things sorted.
2) Have you tried any other browsers? If not, I would definitely check out Firefox.
Thanks.
For my FPS (America's Army), I gots my Audioslave and Incubus out.
For anything else (basically strategy) its a variety of things, from the Chili Peppers to the Fray.
