ok, but you also mentioned that you recently changed the hardware,
so running a hardware scanner/doctor-type program might be advisable & make sure you get all the updates might need from the manufacturers websites for 'em

also antivirus, why use so much antivirus, the programs are probably fighting eachother
i only use microsoft security essentials, and it seems like enough...

if a fresh test install on a test partition with only your problem app installed still does not help, also try setting that problem program(s) to run using a compability mode
good luck!

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

for your LAN problem, have you tried?:

open the properties of your ether adapter
networking tab, click IPv4(or6, if you can subnet IPv6!)
click propeties button
click use the following IP address
enter these
ip address 192.168.1.11 (or 192.168.1.2or?)
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.1.1

hopefully this will make your connection static (vs. dynamic)
and autoconfiguration will be disabled, so you might need to set a DHCP address.
getting a router would probably solve your DHCP problem, since most are DHCP servers themselves. you might also need your ISP to tell you what thier DHCP address is,(i have heard of that before)

some useful cmd line (maybe)
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushDNS
ipconfig /renew
good luck!

-edit might want to run msconfig to check & see if DHCP client service is running....

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

mark it closed! you solved it! :D

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

the only advice i can think of right now
would be to disable, then re-enable the adapter when the connection is lost
then at least you wouldn't have to restart maybe

wow, i just learned that windows7 can use a single wireless adapter as a hotspot and a client at the same time while i was trying to learn what a WAN miniport is....

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

that is easy
type 'msconfig' into the 'run' line, click 'boot' tab
took me a long time to answer because i don't want another
infraction for posting in a solved thread

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

well the only thing i know about that might help(at least for PCs) is
windows AIK(auto installation kit)
it is an IT pro tool that is somewhat technical.
once you learn to use it, you can do custom installs
by setting everything up ahead of time. the info goes on the usb drive
than you can install on multiple machines quicker
it can be downloaded somewhere from microsoft

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

in the Run... line type msconfig or msconfig.exe or msconfig.msc
click the 'startup' tab to see what is running at startup.
click the 'services' tab to see services you might want to disable.

try to use drwatson.exe(or whatever it's called) to scan for hardware problems

search 'pcdoctor' online that is another hardware scanner

even a newly installed OS might still need to be defragged

jingda commented: well said +9
skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

defragment! get it to 0%
also check disk for errors
these are easily found in start menu programs accessories system tools

your computer should not be having problems running windows7...it seems like a hardware problem possibly due to the overclocking...i would need help myself

-edit-also check for video card driver updates

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

there could also be more than one place in the registry where it is.
i usually get those types of errors after migrating an operating system to a different partition. but it sounds like you don't want to still use the program, otherwise i'd say check the *.ini configuration file in the program's folder(if it has one. sometimes you can also fix path errors in the registry(depending on program) that's all i know for now

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

to access your router page you can click start,
type cmd.exe
in the comd box type ipconfig
press enter
the 'default gateway' is your router. type that # into your web browser address line. your router page should come up.

you can also try remote desktop,
click start, right-click computer, then choose properties
click 'remote settings' and go from there
remote desktop can be started from start menu all programs,
accessories, remote desktop connection.

make sure 'name' and all computers have at least one password
-there still is more to try if none of this works, like group policy, but that shouldn't be the problem unless someone(or something!) has something set up to block.
group policy will blow your mind- type gpedit.msc into the run line.

also you can disable the sharing wizard by clicking organize in windows explorer, then 'folder and search options', 'view' tab, scroll down and there it is. uncheck it and click ok.
then you can use password-protected sharing without the homegroup/workgroup, i believe.

jingda commented: Hi there, skilly +9
skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

i think the program you want to find is regedit.exe
you can type it in the run line, or do a search for where it is.
the registry is huge, but it has it's own search box(find..probably)

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

right-clicking!
to set permissions, right-click the drive, choose properties.
choose the security tab and go from there.

for just moving something, right-click it, choose cut, then right-click where you want to move it to and choose paste

Danarchy commented: To the point and easy. +5
skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

eh...you can also click control panel->uninstall a program->turn windows features on or off-> then uncheck to uninstall, click ok,
then do same thing to reinstall IE8
(if you are using windows7; you might need install disc if your using something else)

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

you only need one with 2 adapters. one adapter goes to same router as the rest of the workstations, the other adapter goes to new connection, bridge adapters, set-up ICS(sharing) on this one workstation to share new connection with the others.
i am over-simplifying on purpose.

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

there is also the possibility of using a desktop as a router(internet connection sharing)if it has 2 adapters, and put a router(LAN only) in-between the existing modem and stonewall thing(or wherever)plug one adapter to the modem, other to the router, then bridge the adapters.

kinda silly, i know, but there's many ways

-edit-3 bridged adapters & no router?maybe?

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

if you don't want to take apart your computer, check all of your power saving settings.(obvious, i know)

but yes, could be vid card, or even power supply, or
some other hardware problem. could also be a virus.(virus is always a possibility for everything these days, it seems like)

-edit power settings, like hibernate, sleep, etc,
-edit you cloud also check your BIOS for a setting

-edit-rolling back or updating the driver for the monitor might help, same with driver for video card

-i had similar monitor trouble when i had a bad power supply....

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

my suggestion would be just add another gateway(new connection) and then add the new network to each computer.

i wouldn't even know how to combine 2 ISPs into one network, if that's what you're trying to, but i can think of a few ways that i'd like to try.

but i think 2 networks would be much simpler. just customize each machine for where/what it needs to do.

-edit upon further thought, you ARE probably trying to support one network with two internets.
and i'll keep thinking about it

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

of course, i'm 99% sure it would

that is exactly the reason i already had my floppy disabled, and only one cd/dvd drive instead of two
+edit+ and then you don't have to hear that annoying sound it makes sometimes!

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

is this thread solved yet?

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

grako, you cannot share from computers that have no password setup when simple file sharing is disabled:)
do you know about remote desktop?

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

that is great! i immediately shared to my facebook..
jingda has made me like him again

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

well... iread your other thread...and i can't solve it but,
if you want to disable a service so it won't restart,
type 'msconfig' in the 'run' line, then 'services' tab.
maybe that will help(unless you already knew that)

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

i was just joking, because if it was stolen, you could just reinstall XP to get it
running.
-edit- unless its got TPM hardware! please ignore me for the rest of this thread.
i don't know the answer for this, so i will just sit back and watch.

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

he wants both, jingda

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

perhaps that sound is that of a toilet flush, the obvious answer would be to check for a setting in PCC

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

turns out xp does have on-screen keyboard, but you can't get to it from the welcome screen

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

to see webpages, your network card must have DHCP & DNS addresses set in there.
usually putting the router's ip will solve this, but i'm starting to lose track of
your questions, so just keep trying stuff and you'll figure it out eventually:)

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

uh steve sir, i don't think xp has the on-screen keyboard, but i could be wrong.

hehheh....i wonder if it's a stolen computer!

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

i'm sure you don't need to take down the firewalls, though.
maybe you should see if you can use remote desktop

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

one way would be to open the 'tools' menu from a folder's menu, select
'folder options' then 'view' tab
at bottom of list uncheck 'use sharing wizard' or 'use simple sharing'

for this to work, your usernames must have passwords set

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

bridging your virtual adapter and real one on the host is another idea

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

plug the pc and laptop to the router, make sure they are connected.(ipconfig)
i'm not gonna tell all steps, but on the pc, go to the adapter list folder(can't think of what it called right now)or device manager. select both adapters at the same time, then right-click them. choose 'bridge connections'...now you should be able to share internet using ICS...but there is still more to do before it will work....

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

sounds like you are using a virtual server, am i right?
try to play around with the way the server uses the network adapter for connecting. i tried what you are trying, but i had lots of problems, and became bored with it. i will try again someday when i get more disk storage space...

p.s. if you can get the server to show up on your router's client list, you are doing better than i was.

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

i just realized this thread's 4 months old
i wonder how things went...

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

yes indeed! 6 year-old computer!

so the answer is no. IE9 is not useless.

but it is useless on my computer

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

yeah, do a remote desktop into a virtual machine and you will see problems.
i haven't used vmware for a while, so i'm not sure all it's capable of,
but it might have something to do with your video card driver on the virtual machine.
that can be a problem if your real box doesn't support hardware emulation.

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

Majestics, most routers you just type the IP address into your browser....

not everything is always so difficult

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

your comment on my reputation makes no sense, kraai
why don't you just stop following me around?

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

why should that matter?

Kraai commented: It matters because then one can know any default passes if need to be -2
skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training
skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

i need to do more research,

but my computer already has 1.5GB memory(1024MB+512MB)
right now my cpu is the weak part of my box(2.1GHz=3.4 windows exp. rating)

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

it never hurts to look at bios

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

so you agree that my box is just old&weak, right kraai?

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

thanks for the advice, bal

i'll let you get back to business

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

yeah me too, i have a usb wg111v3 adapter, it works perfect for xp, but now
that i'm using win7 again, my problem is back again.

what happens to me, though, is i lose my internet connection, the light on the adapter stays on solid(usually it blinks).
nothing freezes until i try to shut down or restart. then i have to pull the plug.
and reinstall the adapter every time

i also have dynamic ip address, anything else i can do besides updating & harassing
netgear about it?

i downloaded the update and it has not failed for like several hours now
seems my previous post here was unneccessary, ishould've made my own thread

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

well i set my OS for 'best perfomance', pre-downloaded an update from micro,
turned off active virus protection, and re-upgraded to ie9(not clean install)

after installing, works tiny bit better, but not near fast enough!
new virus definitions released today(?) didn't find anything.
when i ran upgrade it just said something like,"upgrade not needed on this computer"

i think my computer is just old&weak& not ready for ipv6.
i'm going back to ie8 until i get another idea...

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

since you say the problem lies with ie8, then maybe i should uninstall/de-upgrade(if possible) and do a clean install of ie9? because my installation of ie9 was listed as an upgrade? i will go check microsof now because i keep thinkin bout it!

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

Internet becoming slow probably result from your system registry. It is advisable for you to clean your registry with a ......

there is also defragmenting, and possibly increasing the cache size?
but i think jaward seems to be ok.

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

well.. i have no video problem. it's just too slow too load everything on a big page. facebook works ok, but no flash player! too slow too download flash player!
compatability button did not seem to help.

my videocard is 128MB ati radeon 9600 if that'll help at all. i didn't check the microsoft blogs very much yet, though because i think i shouldn't have to(it should work better by now!) but i'll check again, thanks

-edit after browsing this site, i'm thinking maybe it's because my setup is not fully ready for ipv6, so i can't really test it out good then, but still not sure

skilly 23 Posting Whiz in Training

hah! that picture's funny-looking! try to grab the corner and strech it,
try alt+ctrl+del, try close from taskbar, keeps opening the same? then i don't know yet
