something you install may have caused a drive conflict ,
if you have a winxp cd you could boot to it and do a repair ,and at the dos prompt type in "chkdsk /r " with out the " and there is a space between the k and the /

wow hope people don't forget to hit R ,the second time or they could load a second windows install by mistake .and mess up the computer big time .

back allready ,i just put a dvd in and to my amazement my sister never setup here media edition to play dvd ,i was prompter to select things like my display type and display settings i would like to use ,like lcd reg or wide screen or reg monitor ,display settings like 1024x768 or what ever i wanted to use ,so my question would be did you and other poster ,make sure you made all the right media center Wizzard choices

I'm working on cleaning viruses from a winxp media center edition ,right now ,belongs to my sister ,i will in a bit go to the media center and play dvd and see what if anything happens and let you know ,all will have a look around the net .

just a question ,this is a couple of times i've seen you tell people how to use the disk to do a repair ,would you please tell me how this is done ,as i only get a dos prompt when i go to R for repair ,any commands i should type or do i just guess as to what to type in

HI - I had a problem with Xp Professional SP2 2002 so I booted from cd and selected R to repair. It went through to lookinf for Prodect key and it wont accept my key. I have searched for a key on the web to no avail and I cant back out of the repair. Any help please?

So you are doing the second Repair option where it does a install over previous winxp install !!right ,
You do know that what you've done you were suppose to back up all important data just in case ,you may need to interrupt the install and take the harddrive out to put in another computer as slave and retrieve the data ,and do a fresh reinstall of winxp my opinion anyway .only thing i can think of on this topic i said in my other post about the sp1 ans 2 issue ,sorry

im stumped for the moment .let me think a bit about it .i load and repair windows a lot ,and have only about 32 meg of memory .lol i know i had this problem before ,thinking ,thinking ,will post back a bit later .

now having said what i said in the post above ,you really should not be having problem downloading without these drivers i do it all the time with a usb to nic adapter ,when install winxp fresh and have to get nic drivers for the computer ,you cleary have other issues ,what im not sure .

how do i fix the driver problem if i cannot download the driver ? i know how and where to get the drivers but am unable to odwnload the same.

you will need to do it on another computer ,copy them to a disk or thumb drive and bring them to you computer and install them .

ok,so its the original disk that came with the laptop ,and it will not take the key from the back side of the laptop,or is it a different copy, possible miss type of number ,sometime this problem can be caused when using a winxp cd with SP2 ,on a original install that was only SP1.you may need to borrow/use a disk that is SP1

To solve this problems, use your Windows CD to repair the Windows. POP! All done.

do you have a legit copy of xp pro install OR,are us using a legit copy of xp pro to do the repair on a computer with the no so legit copy of xp installed ,now be honest or we cant help you with this problem .

not necessarly you asked what makes a cdrom bad ,i answered ,
as to the freezing of the computer you have other issues ,not likely caused by the cdrom if it freezes for or five times a day it could be a bad stick of ram ,bad harddrive ,bad motherboard ,bad cpu ,bad power supply ,bad video card ,corrupt windows ,should i keep going !!!
start with ram ,if you have a computer with a burner that works ,download memtest86 program .and create a bootable cd,boot computer to it and check the ram .

the Laser is the usual cause of a bad cdrom /dvd drive ,fails to read a cd/dvd

OoPs! I never knew the difference between these 2 temperatures.

Also as I mentioned above that my laptop is showing CPU temperature of 63-78* C from all 2-3 software I checked through such as Sensors View Pro 3.1, SpeedFan, etc.

I am still waiting for the top management reply to my email and let's see what he says. By the time, I thought to get some idea from you guys whether the CPU temperature from those software is accurate or approximately accurate or do I need to do something else to check the accurate CPU temperature?

on startup you need to go into BIOS/Setup not sure what key you need to use to get in but it usually says on the screen .and in there you will see a section on pc health ,it will show temps .

this from one of the links is talking about planet Earth temps.not the computers temps.

you have 1 gig now [shared with video hence the 894],so unless it has more that 2 ram slots you only need to get 1 gig .

Free is good!! sometimes,$100.00 is not bad if they actuall fix it for that ,and that 100 dollars isn't just for looking and then the bill gets bigger and bigger . .anyway it stopped working a year ago for a reason ,hard to jump to conclusions with out having it front of me!,did you try starting it with the battery out ,just use the power cord .also did you leave it plugged in overnight to charge and then try it .if i had it here i would take out the hard drive and try booting it without it in.

well,i would add a bit more ram to the computer .like another 512meg at least ,have you tried to burn a music cd with some other form of burning software like Nero,

I swept the drive a few days ago for spyware and other things, cleaned it all out. Still having problems. .

maybe it caused by virus/trojan/spyware if you are still having problem .

i have no idea as to what will and will not work in it sorry ,research that would have to be done on hp web sit or through a google search ,sorry.

edit= the computer is much like the one i replaced a board in last summer actually except mine was Intel ,and i just used a standard mATX Asus mother board

if you find exact one to replace it with yeah,and find that ,that was the problem .really you can't diagnose the problem here on this forum .

or you could check e-bay for mother board for it .

yeah! it been my experience that when it boots like yours its usually the motherboard.but it could also be ram,or video card .,it could be a lot of things so you really need to trouble shoot by replacing thing with known working parts .a computer with nothing inside but a cpu and motherboard with video card, will still boot and show things on the monitor .

assuming that the power supplies you used were good then im sticking with motherboard and or cpu.

of the top of my head, it could be the cpu and or motherboard .when the smaller harddrive spins does it try to load ,are you getting anything on the monitor

at the start button go to run,type in "msconfig" with out the quotes" in there you will find the Real Player , un check it and any other program you recognize and don't need running .reboot after you finish ,then check not to show this again in the dialog box that comes up after reboot.

Could it be perhaps an issue with the burner only being able to burn on the other type of DVD (DVD+R's)? Would that cause this sort of issue?

yeah if the burner is a +r only dvd burner ,its not gonna burn -r's ,the links i posted they seem to be having a lot of problems burning ,and all seem to lead to a firmware update,that can be trick as it can destroy the burner if it goes wrong ,its a similar process as doing a bios flash in a computer

was it plugged into a serge protector ! ,does it have a dialup modem in use ,if yes remove it as it could have got the power serge,or the motherboard may have taken the hit .
try hitting f8 on bootup to see if it will give options for safe mode.if it go to safe mode ,go to my computer and right click on the hard drive icon /properties and tools ,and error check to set it to do a chkdsk / fix errors on reboot .
