The new drive is a maxtor 200GB and is formatted. The computer was running XP and I have the recovery Disks to redo the system if I can get that far. Thank you for your reply.

how old is that computer ,200 gig might be to big ,there maybe bios limitiations as to how big a drive it will take

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

you will need the cd ,you have to put it in the cdrom when asked during the xp upgrade .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

ree reading you first post ,

The computer detects the DVD rom and reads the installation disk (I assume it reads it because the disk spins) The problem is the installation will not autoplay.

are you being aked to hit any key to boot from cd ,when the computer first bootup

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

have you tried the disk in another computer to make sure it is ok

well we don't use the term delete when we refer to removing an OS from the computer ,you will need to reformat with the new to rid the old eventually 1,if you can try booting you new computer to any other version of windows try it .have you tried your new xp 64 cd in another computer to make sure it is working ,all you need to do it put it in a computer that is all ready booted to its windows and see if it auto pops up ,if it does just exit the cd .don't try to install it on the other computer .
I still thinks you problems are releated to improper setup of the drives !the way ther are plugged into the motherboard ,something is wrong!!

This Pavillion 7955 was given to me by a friend who told me the hard drive died. When trying to boot it shows a message that the boot disk is bad. I put in a new hard drive and got the same message. I tried a new connecter ribbon with no luck. I'm thinking the Mother Board must be bad. Is there anything else I can try?

What size drive is the new one and is it new or just new to you ,is it formated ,if you don't have a windows bootdisk go to www.bootdisk.com and get one ,what windows OS do you have to install on the new drive .so many questions !!

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

The computer detects the DVD rom and reads the installation disk (I assume it reads it because the disk spins) The problem is the installation will not autoplay.

just because it spins doesn't mean its reading the disk .,does the bios detect the dvd rom is bios set to boot to dvd rom first .

The only thing I have thought of is to take out the hard drive of my old computer and install it on the new one, so the XP would load. Then I would load my new XP X64. But I dont know if that would even work

nope !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Hmm... yeah I guess I have to go through all that. Again. lol (part of the long story)

Anyway, when the laptop hdd is in the desktop pc, should I format it as FAT32? then boot into that FAT32 partition on the laptop with a Windows 98 boot disk, and start the NT installation from DOS ? (because then during NT setup I can format a different partition as NTFS)

It's frustrating because I did that already, only to find that when I tried to install my WiFi card, it required Service Pack 4, and I had no way of getting SP4 onto the laptop. lol That's why I did everything from a desktop PC, hoping it would be easy as pie. :(

format it ntfs ,if you have the sp4 as a file copy it to hdd to and install it later.you can get a nt boot disk here http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Are you saying there's absolutely nothing I can do to save this installation?

Would booting from the Windows NT install floppies, and opting to do a repair make a difference? Would it remove the service packs I installed?

Does anyone know how to boot a Dell Inspiron 3500 from a USB thumbdrive? Then I could install Windows NT from there...

I have install window on 100's of computers ,but only installe NT once and that was a few yrs ago ,if you think you can put the install on a usb device then you should be able to put the hdd back in the other computer and format it and copy the nt install to it ,then put it back in the dell and run the install from the hdd with a windows boot disk .i done this with win95 and 98 on a laptop with no cdrom

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Most OS need to be installed in the computer they are going to be use on !!!! especually if they are in the ntfs file format, its usually a motherboard drivers issue

Hi Caperjack,

Is this done by selecting the deleting them in HJT?

I do see a bunch of them that don't need to be running, but I don't want to mess anything up.

Thanks,
H2OFIELD

Yes just check the ones you know you don't need and hit fix selected ,hjk creates and saves a backup in case you fix the wrong one.

While i was working on my other computer it turned off, i had been on for awhile so i figured it might have over heated so i left it alone for a couple hours. When i tried to start it it sounded like it was about to start up fine but then everything stoped and just the green light was left on. So i turned it off and tried powering up again, and now nothing happens except for the green light going on.
I hear nothing try and start not even fans.

This computer has been running for the past year without problems.

My only thought is recently i bought a new mouse and that probably uses more power then my previous one (both optical however) and that it burnt out the psu?

You might be thinking right about it being a power supply ,can't imaging it being the mouses fault though ,all you need to do is try a new PSU

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Hello Jonathan welocme to daniweb ,
try opening computer and removing the ribbon cable to the cdrom and mother board and reinstall then ,might be loose .iuf no difference
, right click mycomputer /properties /device manager ,click on the + by cdroms if there and click on the cd rom listed ,if there ,and remove it and reboot computer this will reinstall the drivers ,or it could be that your cdrom just up and died on you ,good luck

I was in the prosses of reformatting my dell coumputer
when I started the coumputer up and now all I get is error loading operating system. what can i do to get it started. will my Dell recovery XP CD work and reinstall the OS? I don't any of the files on the hard drive. I need step by step instructions on how to get it booting up again.

Have to ask what did you think would happen when you formated your drive ,!!
Yes the dell recovery will reinstall windows ,that would be the only thing to do after a format of your Hard drive ,that is why one would format there dirve !to reload the recovery! good luck

Because win98 uses windows default graphic drivers ,until you install the proper driver for your video adapter!!and i have no idea why it won't axcess the bios .did it axcess it before

if i uninstall the display driver, whaat will happen?? will i be able to use the computer or will the display not work. thanks

if you uninstall it in the device manager or through add and remove program, when you reboot computer , windows will load default drivers ,that you can't change the settings on but computer will work ,then you can find or reinstall the correct drivers if you have them

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

i've tried updating them but it said i have the latest one. could you tell me hoe to go about reinstalling them please. thanks

well if it says you have the latests one then it should be working ,when you right click on the desktop and go to properties /settings can you change it to 16 or 32 bit ,
When you right click mycomputer go to properties /device manager , click the + next to display adapter ,what do you see ,are there any yellow or red !!! around anywhere .
some time when we download driver on the net thery are zipped files ,they will need to be unzipped before you can install them ,sometime there is exe file within the folder we need to execute it to install dirvers ,some time we go through display adapers in device manager to install the drivers if there is no executiable .

The majority of Win XP shutdown problems reported thus far have been that it reboots when shutdown is attempted. This may be a global symptom emerging from several distinct causes, because, by default, XP executes an automatic restart in the event of a system failure. Therefore, more or less anything compromising the operating system during the shutdown process could force this reboot. Disabling the restart on system failure feature may permit the exact cause to be isolated: Right-click on My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab. Under Startup & Recovery, click Settings. Under System Failure, uncheck the box in front of System reboot.

From this site ,more info on site about shutdown problems .
