Take out the battery, and start it up with just the power cord plugged in.
nah, that will never work .lol

try removing the battery and just the mains plugged in and bootup
my optiplex170,every day i set up a bios configuration, cannot be save.
likely cause is a dead bios battery ,it is located on the motherboard ,its a silver battery about the size of a quarter ,can be purchased at most computer stores
my friend has a low update rate when on his computer. i noticed that his memory was not showing the full amount. i upgraded his ram to 2 gigs and not all his new ram was detected. it was a small percentage and the ram itself was more than double what he previously had. there was no appreciable improvement. i thoroughly researched the new ram and am certain it is the correct memory. it is a 2002 compact laptop v2000. where do i check next? thankyou patdeeley
don't forget about some of the ram being used for video ,how big a chip did you add ,how much ram did it already have ,i am typing this on a v2000 ,and im almost sure the max is 2gig ,so that would mean i can only have 2x1 gig,it will not resconize a 2gig stick in it
goooo wayyyyyy
I dont know if I should revert to IE 7 on the hung applications end?
hi is this a new computer built for win7, di it come with win7 installed , and you downgrade to winxp.
how much ram is install in the computer ,also how big and how much free space in on you harddrive
I hear it running and i see it in the HARDWARE DEVICE section on the Control Panel but it seems not to reconize it
hi, does it show an icon for the cdrom in mycomputer
that make no sense to me ,why all those devices would not work ,,so i assume it will not boot directly to the win7 dvd so you can try reinstalling win7 ,and i really don't have much to add, sorry
yeah that is a surprise ,after you install win7 did it boot up and work
do the task manager one again ,only this time click on the process tab ,make sure to check off show all ,and maximize to show all the processes listed
first thing i think of is the laptop might be overheating and locking up ,is this possible,is it older laptop and do u dust off the heatsinc and fan regularly with a can of compressed air .
hi ,might be of help if you posted make and model# of your laptop .
you could try plugging a usb keyboard to see if that works
Keyboard is USB and should boot up with out the keypad
yes it should ,but its not ,for some other reason ,and you need to get into the bios to to set defaults ,I fix a lot of different computers and see a lot of Dells and compaqs and such name brands that will not work a usb keyboard at this point ,so i suggest a ps/2 keyboard ,borrow one perhaps
LOL
Through my 16 years of life I've formatted and installed tens of Win98 OSs on decent PCs
if you can do that wixp will be child's' play to you, good luck
can i use a usb?
sure, just pick up a usb external hdd case ,put your drive in it,make sure it ata/IDE if that whats the old dive is
In regular mode it lets me choose the user but after that it brings up my background I had set and no icons or anything
try this when you get to this point , do ALT+CTRL-DEL ,go to task manager ,go file /new task , there in run type with out the quotes "explorer.exe " this should bring back the desktop .
try this right click on the mycomputer icon ,go properties /then advanced tab /then the performance tab ,and its in the list there
Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor ,read the overview ,and download and install and run the program

try booting to your win7 dvd and do a repair see if it will fix the explorer.exe file
I don't see any where to do that. The modem doesn't show anything.
you need to know what your doing and go into its setting using it ip address or a cdrom disk that came with it usually ,who setup the encryption and grave you the key to put in
but I'm right by the modem ;;
try turning off the routers' security so you don't need to put in a key ,and see what happens
Your welcome ,actually i leaned something new when goggling the laptop model ,never heard of graphics switching on the fly .
http://www.trustedreviews.com/laptops/review/2010/02/24/nVidia-Optimus-Explained/p1
hi whats a a ned board?
do you mean you computer shuts down [or are you having a monitor problem ]and your thinking you might need a new motherboard
hi ,never heard of a laptop with 2 video devices ,and don't think you have one ,think you are maybe confusing chip set[yours has Mobile Intel® HM55 Express Chipset] and video device chipset ,a google search reveals the laptop has NVIDIA® GeForce® 310M,i would go to asus website and get the latest drivers for NVIDIA® GeForce® 310M, and reinstall it and leave it alone the laptop will use this device for both games and regular computing
most important hardware for games is video ,and you don't mention what video device you are using ,none of your specs mean anything if you are trying to play high graphic games on a computer meant for data processing and surfing the net
if anyone knows the best (and preferably free) way to transfer a partition to another drive, let me know.
sad part is the Samsung utility should do that for you
edit ,check it after it i posted and it doesn't,but win7 will create a disk image .in control panel go to backup and restore
alo sending it back on the premise its going to fail will not result in you getting a new drive they will want a error code # from the utility ,and also will just check the drive when they receive it and if it test ok ,will just send it back to you
OK.SORRY
here's the one for the internal drive .
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/utilities/ES_Tool.html
I got some kind of error ,
Anyone got any ideas
======
i'll try to help you but it
helps to know what the error actually said

please explain a little more as to what you mean by stops, does it ever start the computer
my assumption is a dead harddrive [was with every hdd i came acreoss the acted the same way ],the fact it stop the computer dead and hirens can see it and the other computer cant when connected externally
remove the battery ,hold down the power button for about 40 seconds , put battery back in and try turning it on again
try again ,chkdsk /P/R , with the "R" instead of the "f"tag
and if it has same results ,then you hard drive is bad

what your point
cute ,mocrosoft lol
hi, hold down the power button till it shuts off ,reboot what happens ,if nothing ,you also might try removing the battery then try turning on again
Don't think so ,don't know of any windows version that it was possible to move it
Well a process that can show a high % in the process tab is the system idle,
yes true ,but the cpu usage shows the most important info.
try a system restore back to before the first time you had this problem
did you try my first suggestion of creating a new user acct
======
Why do I always have problems that no one can seem to fix??
because you are unique,lol
hi, i would boot to my windows cd .chose R and go to Recovery consol and run the command for checking the disk for errors .
command is .
CHKDSK /P/F
see if you can created a new user and see if it still crashes
go start ,double click your user icon to go to user settings ,it may crash as this is in the control panel .if it does try doing it in safe mode
your control panel dll file may be corrupt .you might try sfc /scannow to repair broken /corrupt system files .
==================
Here's How:
1.Open Command Prompt.
Important: You must run Command Prompt as an administrator in Windows 7 and Windows Vista to use System File Checker.
go to start type cmd into the search field ,right click the file that comes up and chose run as admin
2.Once Command Prompt is open, type the following command and then press Enter.
sfc /scannow3.System File Checker will now verify the integrity of every protected operating system file on your computer.
Note: In some situations, especially in Windows XP and Windows 2000, you may also need access to your original Windows installation CD or DVD.
4.Restart your computer if sfc /scannow did actually repair any files.
Note: System File Checker may or may not prompt you to restart but even if it doesn't, you should restart anyway.
5.Repeat whatever process caused your original problem to see if sfc /scannow corrected the issue.
I know what drivers are so that's not the case here.
so you have the latest drivers for the video device installed correct .
and it never happened before the reinstall ,correct .
did you check the resolution setting and refresh rate setting .
I can't believe I finally found others with the same problem!
My other problem though is I know nothing about fixing computers on the inside with the hardware!
When you mention you repaired the power supply, are you talking about the box with the fan
or are you talking about the external power strips? Thanks,
