My money is on the PSU. Spinning fans doesn't mean that the PSU is working properly. Second guess would be VGA. Fried VGA would cause some beeps too. (1 long 7 shorts) Third guess is RAM. (etc.) As Mike said, process of elimination is the ONLY way to single-out the …

I could think of couple of things: VGA: If your VGA is not embedded in your motherboard you can try and re-seat it. (it does sound like bad VGA-mobo connection) Worst case scenario would be toasted VGA. (or mobo, if embedded) Memory: Wrong settings or faulty memory could cause windows …

(copy-paste from microsoft support site) Bad Fault in MS-DOS Extender This error message occurs when the fault handler dispatcher in DOSX.EXE generates another cascaded fault while trying to handle a protected-mode exception. This error is usually caused by one of the following factors: • HIMEM.SYS is unable to control the …

Try booting in safe mode (press f8 for boot menu) and access event viewer (administrative tools). That way you can see the logs of warnings and errors that occurred. That should give an insight of what the problem is. Feel free to post any questions or suspicious entries.

You said that all of the files were renamed to "00000000.000". If this is the same USB stick we're talking about, it is obvious that you need driver for it. You tried to delete files from it, but the machine you used couldn't handle that stick, so the errors occurred. …

You'll have to disable RAID in you BIOS. Also, if the drive is brand-new, it has no partitions. Via disk managment you can create a partition. That partition needs formating. Via disk managment or explorer. But the problem is the disk change. You'll need to install windows all over again. …

There could be couple of likely possibilities: - you need f4 drivers (for SATA/SATA II drives) - memory timings are incorrect - incopatible memory-mobo-CPU - CPU/DRAM voltage is too low - badly overclocked machine - faulty piece of hardware (mobo, memory, HD...)

Hi Nanci. I guess you don't belong to the "what does this button do?" category, so I'm gonna talk more abbreviations with you. My first suspicions are (although I don't have much experience with IBM machines) that the problem you are experiencing is most likely to be a "safety switch" …

Your mobo supports DDR and DDR2 memory architectures. 2 slots per each. Make sure that your (it is DDR2, isn't it?) memory is in appropriate slot. Otherwise, I say you have a bad mobo there.

If it restarts only while booting (?), then how do you get past it? If it is regular switch on-boot-restart-boot again-normal, I say that it is a BIOS issue. Most probably CMOS battery drained. Side-effects would be loss of system date and time. 2nd guess: BIOS settings are not as …

Does it work without battery? (A/C only) A whole new motherboard? Depends on the model, but, in general, no. I suppose that it wouldn't be too much $$$ to have it fixed.

I recommend that you use Executive Software Diskeeper, if your HD is on NTFS. It is the only defragmenter that is capable of defragmenting MFT (Master File Table) and pagefile on Windows XP. They tend to be a major performance poopers.

If it started vibrating recently, then you should back it up and RMA it. That is problem of mechanical nature, and there is nothing you can do, except replace it. On the other hand, if this is a brand-new drive, then that could be normal behavior.

In theory you can. What you need to know is which slots are of which channel. You can't mix different sticks on single channel. Usually, the layout is: 1st slot -1st channel 2nd slot - 2nd channel 3rd slot - 1st channel 4th slot - 2nd channel After you plug …

You need to adjust volume / select source for RECORDING not playback (which is the default window in volume control). Change to Recording volume control by clicking options/properties and make sure that the Microphone's "select" checkbox is checked. Do not crank up the volume if it is 1/2 way. It …

Are there any symptoms like HD led being constantly on when it freezes? Are there any error messages, BSODs..? Maybe the event viewer holds some clues of what is wrong with the machine.

Here's the layout: 2 PC's (Windows XP - Windows 98), connected via LAN (Xlink cable). All drivers/clients/services/protocols up and running. On the XP side is NVIDIA's firewall. All went well until I've done some changes on the Win98 PC that required me to pull out the LAN adapter. After I …

You do not have any nasties there, other than "O4 - Startup: PowerReg SchedulerV2.exe" which is a reminder that (ppl say) tries to connect to the internet. You can check that one in the hijackthis and fix it, so it won't be activated on the next boot. Your system slowing …

Try removing the battery while A/C is unplugged. That way you'll clear the CMOS. After that you can try to boot it normally.

Seems like a hardware failure. Either you have dead HD, optical drive, IDE cable or IDE controller. First 3 can be replaced. Last one is embedded in the motherboard. My first bet is optical drive. They have the shortest lifespan. Are you sure that the drives are not disabled in …

Only real danger with overclocking (CPU or VGA) is overheating. If you have some decent CPU/VGA cooling solution, if you know your way around BIOS and if you are not afraid to open up the case to reset the CMOS (switching 1 jumper back and forth), you have nothing to …

It all depends on what you need your PC for. Package 1 is ideal for office/IT/text processing usage. Package 2 is for games/3d CAD software usage. If you're not a gamer, I say package 1. If you are 3d graphic designer, go for 2 Package 2 has one flaw. LAN. …

The faulty "motherboard" battery (CMOS battery to be technical) would cause cmos corruption. That's the BIOS settings and configuration. Once you "save the BIOS settings and exit" some of that corruption is gone. Some BIOSes even have the option to clear the CMOS. That would be the first aid your …

First (and, hopefully. the last) step would be to replace the PSU. If it exploded, that's it. It won't come back to life now.

If I got it right, you started to install the XP, but when it rebooted (after copying the files), nothing happened, right? Try disabling advanced power management in your BIOS. That is common problem with all windows up to XP. (dunno 'bout vista) BTW, you should stick to the w98. …
