How to identify the driver of a device working in Linux (RHEL 5) ??

How can I get VMWare player to install on Ubuntu Linux 7.10? The server (from apt-get) needs a serial number, which I do not have. The VMWare player that I have is an rpm file. How can I install this on a Debian-based distro? ie: Ubuntu.
