Entirely disabling the RPC service will pretty much render the local machine useless. The RPC service should be set to "Automatic", and the RPC Locator service should be set to "Manual". Network exploits involving RPC are a different story- you should take steps to secure [search]vulnerable RPC ports[/search].

To answer a few of your questions: 1. USB support was not introduced until the "B" version of 95, and didn't reach any sort of reliability until 98SE. 2. 95 can be upgraded to 98SE, and you shouldbe able to do that without data loss. As with any OS upgrade …

If it's a corruption of the operating system, you can try to facilitate a repair by booting into rescue mode from the Windows installation CD and seeing if you can do an automatic repair.

Windows doesn't recognize your SATA card, so you'll need to load the card's drivers (probably from floppy) at the appropriate point in the Windows installation procedure. If you give us the exact make and model # of the SATA controller card we can probably give you more specific instructions.

Have you totally disabled all firewall software on all machines while performing your troubleshooting? If you can't even ping a machine, it's often a question of blocking by a firewall.
