Hello,

To be honest, I would consider purchasing a true Powerbook instead of an iBook for your situation. You said you wanted to do heavy graphics on your computer, and a full Powerbook has better innards (faster cache, faster motherboard speed) than the iBook that you will notice while performing larger image manipulation.

Also, the iBook and Powerbook both have video out. On the iBook, you have true video mirroring, meaning what you see on the LCD of the laptop is what will come out the extended port. On the PowerBook, however, you can do either mirroring, or have a second desktop. Having a second monitor is priceless for large working documents.

You will probably find Photoshop and other software at much reduced cost once you reach the university. I would plan on making the purchase there, as college students often get the best deals on hardware and software combinations. If you can, go to the college before you start your term, and see what kind of academic discounts you can find.

If you were just going to do word processing, and spreadsheets and such, a normal iBook would be fine. But with your plans, you should aim higher and faster.

Hello DCC,

I suppose that you have the technical data in front of you to make the claim "what a load". If you have read (and understood) the NTIA's report. You have also gone to the ARRL site, and have seen and heard the interference reports. It is rather convincing.

Your cell phones and broadcast frequencies will work next to BPL because it is on the other side of the spectrum, and not in the interference areas. Your cell phone operates anywhere from 800 - 900 MHz -- very far away from 5 - 80 MHz where the BPL technology operates. So you wouldn't recognize it.

As for the Dutch train comms system... are they high speed - high bandwith connections, or a serial-like interface of slow to moderate speed and bandwidth? I bet you the signals are not comparable.

It may be illuminating for you to discover that many Amateur radio stations that use HF have antennas about 50 - 100 ft. off the ground -- not tremendously high when you compare with TV towers that are usually 500 - 1000 feet up -- and these home HF antennas can reach overseas rather easily. So your train rails, if they operate at a similar height and power, may be expected to do the same.

Finally, as far as BPL cooking your brain, the tests done by the FCC and other groups indicate that radiation at a higher frequency tends to be absorbed more by …

Hello,

I have several desktops. When I am doing serious color work with a scanner and Photoshop, I do an all-grey background. When I am logged in as root or administrator, it is a bright yellow. Annoying-- yes, but then again I want to remind myself that I am in as God, and to be honest, it is not often at all! If I have to access my servers over modem or vnc, it is also grey.

My primary linux one is the one with the planet, and my primary Mac one is the Enterprise. The Windows desktop has the one with the dolphin.

Hello,

BPL is a hamrful technology, as it causes destructive radio interference along the frequencies it operates. This interference propogates to other areas due to the properties of the electromagnetic spectrum to far away areas.

Hello,

You *can* use the disks, but that would be illegal, unless you purchased Apple's family pack licensing to allow the disks legal permission to be used on more than one computer. If not, then Apple expects you to use the disks only one one computer. Think of it this way: if you did not purchase a volume license arrangement, then one set of disks per computer.

As for what to do....

I would save all my data off, and then format the drive clean, and then install the new OS. This gets rid of old settings and perhaps hidden conversion issues. Yes, a number of people do the upgrade, and it works for them, but think of upgrade time as cleaning out all the old non-used programs, and as a fresh start to computing. Then, after you install the OS, re-install your software.

Going the clean way will take you longer in the short term, but should prevent problems developing down the road.

Hello,

It is possible that you have a permissions problem, a profile problem, or perhaps you have too many things in the task bar.

Create a different account under OSX, and login. Set the magnification and behavior just like you did on the first account. See if the new account has the same problem or not.

If the problem goes away, you have a profile issue with the first account. If the problem is still present, then it is a deeper issue.

Hope that helps,

Christian

Hello,

I doubt the 2003 server is causing the issue, unless you are now authenticating against it. If that is the case, then you very well could have something networking going on. Won't know for sure unless you sniff it.

I would look at the registry settings to see if there are services opening that you do not need. Did something sneak in under your radar? Things love to hide out in the Run... and Run Services... part of the registry where the startup things go.

Hello,

I just answered a post from you concerning your upgrade and having a problem with disk images. Now that I hear about a "slew of problems", I am more convinced than ever that a backup and a re-install from a formatted clean hard drive is the next step.

Christian

kc0arf 68 Posting Virtuoso Team Colleague

Hello,

When you made the upgrade, did you go through an upgrade process, or do a clean install? It is possible that you clobbered something when going through the upgrade options. You may find a lot more success if you do clean installs. Yes, it takes more work, but you also get rid of the hidden issues that can creep onto a computer over the years it is used, such as old fonts, or scraps of a program that you used in the past, and have long since forgotten.

What I would do is backup all the data, and then boot from the 10.4 CD-ROM, and do a clean install, and wipe the drive clean before the install, and then re-install your applications. Yes, it is a lot of work, but it will restore you to a known point -- fresh install, no bugs, no older software / shareware, and from there you can work well.

I agree with jwenting that you should pull the drives and move the data to new ones. While you might be able to clean them up and work with them on your own, I also agree that the computer that has been sitting in grief and misery should just be let go -- it is not as if you could go out there and powerwash the motherboards. There should be some sort of selection to boot from the CD-ROM, unless the computer is too old, and in that case you don't want to run XP on it anyway.

Check the BIOS again, looking for CD-ROM, or it could even be something like IDE-1

On an IDE chain,

IDE-0 is usually the Primary Master, usually a hard drive
IDE-1 is usually the Primary Slave, usually a CD-ROM
IDE-2 would be the Sec Master
IDE-3 would be the Sec Slave

It is also possible that the XP media you have is not bootable, especially if it is not legit. No, I am not accusing, it is just possible.

Windows Will --
* Work with any internal installed Hard drive. IDE or SATA or SCSI, as long as all of the driver requirements are satisfied

Windows WON'T
* Boot and function from a CD-ROM. It requires write access for temp files, and you cannot write to a CD-ROM, and CD-ROM RW's aren't supported
* Boot from any device in the USB tree. This means thumb drives, USB external hard drives, or laptops pretending to be hard drives in some emulation mode (Macs can do this!)
* Boot from a Firewire device
* Boot from a Floppy Disk

kc0arf 68 Posting Virtuoso Team Colleague

Hello,

Windows 2000 and XP are operating systems that seek authentication before allowing a user to continue. This is a security model, and it is used to isolate users from each other. It also allows different users to customize their machines in their own personal way. Linux and Mac OS X have a similar user model.

If your friend remembers the Administrator information (username / password), then that account can be used to reset passwords. If there are any other administrators enabled on that machine, those accounts can also reset passwords. This is why it is really dangerous programming model to almost require users to be local administrators -- there are packages out there that insist that the local user must be a local administrator.

If not, there are tools out there to crack the password, and if that is what you intend on doing, you may research it elsewhere -- we do not discuss those particulars at DaniWeb.

I would suggest that if your friend does not remember the passwords, that you re-format the box and start over. I do not think Windows Repair changes the password file.

And as a side note to you... unless you have the physical security of a vault, I would not enable auto-login. UNless you have nothing of value on the box. It is a sure invitation to problems.

Hello,

Windows Update for HARDWARE DRIVERS is not your friend. NVidia is unstable enough; you do not need Friend of Bill to make it any worse. I say that nVidia is unstable because in the CAD world, I have seen their drivers cause problems to our environment, and ATI wins all arguments in my book.

I am glad to see that you have AVG antivirus running, and am also noting that you have a spyware checker in there too.

You are running Windows XP, and while I am not good enough to tell if it is Home or not (guessing not!), you should have access to the system logs.

Right click on My Computer, and choose Manage. Then expand the little + symbols, and find the System Logs. Open up the Application logs and the System Logs. See if there is anything out of whack in the logs. You might be able to track errors that way.

You can also see if it is a device driver causing a problem. Boot the computer into Safe Mode, and let it run around for a while, and see if the lockup happens. If Safe Mode works for you for an extended period of time, you are looking at a driver issue.

An Airport card is basically 802.11(b), and an Airport Extreme is 802.11(g). As long as the Airport can do the basic wireless, you will be alright. You might not have the latest encryption available, but it should work.

Your Airport card should work with any base station out there... the Apple base station, or the Linksys wireless routers, or the Buffalo Tech ones, or the Netgear.

My Powerbook G3 will not use an Airport card... I use an Orinoco card with a Buffalo Tech wireless router. I have WPA (I think) encryption working just fine.

What I would do is the following:

* Purchase a wireless router. Either the Apple Extreme Basestation, or a competing product, such as the Netgear, Linksys, or Buffalo Tech unit. I personally do not like Linksys due to RF interference their boxes like to generate. If you get the Apple Extreme basestation, it only has one lan port on it, so you might need to add a switch if you are going to have more than one hardwired computer.

* Use the system profiler on your laptop to see if there is an Airport card in there.

* Wire the cable modem to your WAN port on the device you purchased above.

* Wire the desktop to your LAN port, or into a hub connected to the LAN port. Be sure that the cable connecting the LAN port goes to an "uplink" port, or use a …

Hello,

It all really depends on what your environmental demands are. Are you going to ask the Novell server to be a DHCP server too, and have it assign addresses? You will also need to bind TCP/IP to the server's network cards. Once that is done, you will need to check your workstations to see if TCP/IP is installed, and then configure them to either have static addresses, or to talk to the DHCP server.

What is your master plan? You are talking of a big change here.

Hello,

I fault the Clinton administration for the 9-11 situation. His 8 years in office, with distractions to interns and the like, caused him to shy away from serious foreign policy issues, along with corporate troubles here at home.

Clinton had the chance to take care of Osama several times, and ignored it. Yet, Clinton's agnst for the military can be directly shown with his careless deployment of troops to Somalia, and the horrible tradegy of Mogodishu. Pardon my spelling -- my atlas is not here. Clinton weakened our intelligence forces, and annoyed our allies. His buddies in the UN compromised various missions overseas. He was a rotten leader; I am glad he is gone.

Bush may have been given bad intelligence about the WMD's. It is possible that the missles are buried in the sand, or out at sea somewhere. Saddam could have moved them out of the country.

As we are there, we are now having to nationbuild. This is going to take some time. It took time for Germany to rebuild after World War II (it could have been worse -- Hitler wanted his own troops to completely destroy the national infrastructure, and his top brass refused to carry out the order). It took Japan time to recover after World War II. We are talking years here, yet these efforts do not seem to be spoken about in our history books. I have gone through the posts here, and drawn a network diagram, and have realized that you have never clearly stated which computer is the one that is working! Since one of them is working, we will assume the following:

* The router works
* The DNS resolution on the router works
* Your connection to the internet works.

Go to the computer that is WORKING. Open a command window (Start --> Run... then type in cmd). Type in the following into the little black box:

ipconfig /all

Write down the information from the IP Address, Subnet Mask, DHCP Enabled, DNS Servers, and Default Gateway.

Next, go to a computer that IS NOT working.

Fire it up.

Go to the Device Manager. Verify for me please that there are no red X's, and no yellow !'s in the Device manager. You may have checked this before. I want you to check it again.

Open a command window.

Type in:

ipconfig /release

When it is done:

ipconfig /renew

Then, I want you to type in:

ipconfig /all

You should see DHCP Enabled: yes
You should see an IP Address similar to the one that is working.
You should see the same Subnet mask, and Same Default Gateway.
You should see the same DNS Servers.

Test it. Can you open www.foxnews.com?
