If you want to have access to files in case you change to a different operating system or if you want to add another OS in order to dual boot later, partition your drive into different partitions. Make your Windows XP partition NTFS (since you have to) and only make it big enough to hold the OS and some of the programs that wouldn't be useful on other systems (such as the latest versions of Office and such). I usually allocate a 10-20GB partition for Windows XP to live on. The remaining partitions can then be formatted to FAT32 if you'd like.

Every time you remove your heatsink, you must have a clean processor and a clean heatsink, apply a new thin layer of thermal paste, and carefully install the heatsink. If the new heatsink came with thermal paste or a thermal pad already on the heatsink, you will still want the processor to be clean before installing the new heatsink. Basically, you never install a heatsink onto a processor when there is no thermal paste, previously used thermal paste, or improperly applied thermal paste on either the processor or heatsink. Doing otherwise prevents the processor from dissipating heat properly, which can fry your chip.

After you have corrected your processor/heatsink/thermal paste issue, follow the steps listed in the My PC won't start - Read this first! guide starting with the Does your newly assembled PC refuse to POST? section. This will take your machine down to the bare necessities and then build it up from there. This will be helpful in finding the problem component.

After you have followed the steps in the guide, update this thread with your results. If the system is still not functioning, please be specific about what worked and what didn't.

Upgrading processors is possible, but you have to do some research. Not all processors are alike. There are two main brands of processors, ones made by Intel and ones made by AMD. Each of these two brands use a variety of different kinds of processors, some of which are compatible and some of which are not.

The first thing you need to do is find out what type of motherboard you have. If you need some help figuring that out, download and run Everest (it's free). This program will tell you more about your system than you knew existed. Look for the information about your motherboard.

Once you have found the information for your motherboard, post it here. Please be as detailed as possible, including: manufacturer, model, and version number. Also include the details of the current processor: manufacturer, model, socket, speed, etc.

If you are unable to find this information, and your system is from a major manufacturer, post the manufacturer and system model number (for example: Sony PCG-NVR23). From that information, we can look up the details of your system. It is still best to use Everest however since that will tell us more about your unique system than a model number will.

Once we have this information, we can tell you if there are processors that are compatible with your system that are worth upgrading to or not.

I think you are looking in the wrong places. The errors that you listed are related to issues with RAM. It would be my first guess that one of your RAM modules is defective/going bad.

Memtest86 is a great program to test your RAM. Download the ISO and burn it to a disk using Nero or some other program that is capable of burning ISO images. Put the disk in your bootable drive and reboot your system. If your system is set to boot from CD properly, the program will load and start testing your RAM. I recommend letting it run for a long period, such as overnight. Look for memory faults or errors. If any errors occur, you will want to replace your RAM. If you have more than one memory module, take one out, test the system with it, and then test with the other RAM module. If no errors occur, we will have to investigate different options. Either way, give us an update.

eDonkey (and every other file sharing application worth using for that matter) has a configuration page that allows for setting the max upload and download bandwidth that the program can use. I'd recommend talking with him and deciding on a maximum amount that his program is allowed to use and then having him set those values in the program. As punishment for violating the negotiated speeds, remove him from the network for a day.

I'm the network controller in my apartment of four people. It helps to know what your connection is capable of and what is fair. If you are on a DSL connection, your roommate definately needs to limit the upload transfer (A DSL connection's and some cable connection's download capability suffers terribly when the upload portion is overburdened, which happens with filesharing. This is likely to be your main issue). While making sure that no other system is using the network (disconnecting them is recommended), run a line speed test a few times. Record the lowest indicated upload and download speeds. These speeds indicate what you can expect out of your connection consistently. Use these numbers to come to a conclusion on what maximum settings your roommate can run.

With filesharing in my apartment, I have an 80% rule. Each person gets a portion of the connection speed, and the filesharing on each system should not exceed 80% of their share. I understand that you have three roommates, so I will …

The world's biggest problem? I hope that's not true.

Next time you post, please put your code in code tags. Furthermore, in order to answer your question, code isn't really needed. Now, to answer your question...

There isn't a way to get the client time unless the client tells you what the time is on their system. Since there isn't a way to force the client to send the current time on the machine with it's request header, you'll have to find a different way to get that information. I recommend using Javascript.

There are two different ways to use Javascript to get the current time on the page: have it pass the time as part of the URL string or have Javascript print the time on the page itself. Each method has it's strengths and weeknesses. Passing the time as a URL encoded variable allows you to do fancy stuff with the time in Perl before printing the page but the time on the page will reflect that time that the page with the link was loaded, not when the current page was generated. Having Javascript on the page allows the time to be current and could automatically update the time dynamically but results in there being no purpose to the page being generated by Perl (in other words, a standard HTML page could do the exact same thing).

The following is a complete HTML page that will show the current time (see it here)

Here's a page that shows what RAM modules will work with your system (of course, these are Kingston-only modules; I simply picked Kingston as an example). As you can see, your system will support either DDR266 or DDR333 modules of a max size of 512MB and with a total system capacity of 1GB.

It would seem that you already have a DDR333 512MB module, so adding an additional DDR333 512MB module would be the best decision to upgrade your RAM. It might help you to know that DDR333 modules also go by the type description of PC2700.

BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System. This is a program that resides on a chip on the motherboard and performs all the necessary system startup functions that allow the computer to operate and an operating system to load.

It sounds like you have an overheating issue.

Did you make any hardware changes before the problem started?

A good test to see if your case isn't ventilating properly is to open it up, thoroughly spray away all the dust from the heatsinks and boards, and pointing a powerful fan directly into the case. If your computer seems to behave better (takes longer to shutdown), you definately have a heating issue.

If your system isn't overheating, it's very possible that you have a power supply that is faulty or going dead.

A good test to run is Memtest86. You download the program and burn it onto a CD. Then you boot your machine with the CD. The software will run a thorough memory test that will stress your system heavily. If you receive memory errors, it's possible that your RAM is bad. If you don't receive any errors while running the test and, after leaving the program running for a few hours (such as overnight), the test is still running, your hardware is most likely fine and the problem is software related.

Try going to the site again. It seems to be back up and running.

I imagine that when you are talking about a 2.8, you are referring to an AMD Athlon XP 2800+ since your motherboard supports Socket A chips.

There are many 3200+ AMD chips: ClawHammer, Venice, and Winchester. These processors use either the Socket 754 or the Socket 939. Since your board supports only Socket A chips, you cannot use any of those listed chips. If you want to upgrad to one of those chips, you will need to upgrade your motherboard. If you upgrade your motherboard, you will most likely also want to upgrade your RAM to take full advantage of the increased speed of the system bus and processor.

What is the problem that you are experiencing that causes you to want to upgrade your system?

First, you need to make sure that you have installed the line filters on all of your phone jacks that have phones plugged into them and on the line that goes to your modem. Make sure that all the phone cords are connected to the correct port on the filter.

Next, I recommend stopping by Broadband Reports and running their Speed Test and their Tweak Test. The Speed Test will test your connection speed and report any potential issues. The Tweak Test will recommend modificiations you can make to potentially improve your connection's performance and will tell you how to make those modifications.

Finally, it is possible that your line was not properly set up. Call your ISP and report that you are not getting high-speed throughput. Ask them to run a diagnosis on the line and to send someone out to test your setup and connections if they don't find a problem on the line. Be aware that, depending on who your ISP is, you may be charged for this service. I have DSL with SBC, and all the service call charges are covered under my contract.

That is very odd then. I haven't worked with systems of that age for a long time now, so my troubleshooting skills for those machines may be shot.

From your original post, where you talk about your system only using 128MB of the memory module rather than 256MB, it would seem that you are not using the BX6 V2.0 but the BX6.

Let's examine the board a bit more so you can fully understand how it works. From the manual:

The mainboard provides four 168-pin DIMM sites for memory expansion.. The DIMM socket supports 1Mx64(8MB), 2Mx64(16MB), 4Mx64(32MB), 8Mx64(64MB), and 16Mx64(128MB) or double sided DIMM modules. Minimum memory size is 8MB and maximum memory size is 512 MB SDRAM.

There are four Memory module sockets on the system board.(Total eight banks). In order to create a memory array, certain rules must be followed. The following set of rules allows for optimum configurations.

* The memory array is 64 or 72 bits wide. (Without parity or with parity)
* Support single and double density DIMMS.

From this information you can see that the the board can support both single-sided and double-sided memory modules; however, the maximum size for any single memory module is 128MB. This is why your 256MB memory module is only being used as a 128MB module. So, don't try to use anything larger than 128MB, since anything more than that will not be utilized.

A memory module with a configuration of 32Mx64 is a non-ECC memory module with a total capacity of 256MB (32 * 64 / 8).

im not entirely sure, but judging by my router lights, he is must be downloading a very big file, as the wireless has been constantly flashing for about 2hrs.

Constant flashing doesn't mean constant high-bandwidth pull. It means that the connection is being actively used. The wireless light on my router flashes rapidly when my roommates are doing nothing more than playing games, which doesn't use much bandwidth.

The reason I asked about the peer-to-peer software is because improperly configured peer-to-peer programs can cause an abnormally large amount of upload usage, which can severely hinder the download ability of the connection.

I recommend talking to the people who use the connection. Tell them what the problem is and find out how they are using the connection. It would be much cheaper and easier if you set ground rules on how the connection should be used rather than buying a solution that will limit connection access.
