buy a cheap harddrive or a good one for you new system and remove your excisting drive and install it and load win7 on it

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Windows 7 itself contains a program that resizes the partition. If you can install Windows 7 then go to Control Panel --> System and Security --> Administrative Tools --> Computer Management --> Storage --> Disk Management Then right-click on the partition you want to shrink and click Shrink Volume. At that point I'm not certain if it was expand the c: primary partition or create yet another partition.

shortcut to all that is right click on mycomputer and click on manage, then diskmanagement ,and this is what you see if you click on to shrink volum ,you pick the size ,but i think bob needs to expand his volum ,in the picture i posted you will see a link to go to the help section of diskmanagement just click it and read on extending a volum.
love that snipit tool in win7

EDIT: There is one thing you can check to safely disable services that I have found and is not mentioned in any "Tweaking Guide"
When in "Services", clicking on a service will give you a good description in the left pane.
Now, right click on that service and select "Properties" then click on the "Dependencies" tab, if and only if, there are NO dependencies in both boxes, then it is safe to disable with no adverse effect.

sorry about that i have to confess i didn't click on any of them ,i searched and posted my last links based on what OP said in post #3.
i will step back, way back , and read a bit more befor i go google!
and thanks for the blackviper link ,i thought he was gone ,i remember way back in the eatrrly days of win98 when he had a dowload that would aut set the services he though we didn't need ,but of course he stopped that after a bit ,but i ran it on mine way back when

I have recently got a laptop from a friend which seems to have a problem that it can read and write cd's and read any dvd's but movie dvd's oh and double-sided dvd's.... i would like to try that "cdgone" and see if it will fix my prob... Thx bro.. :)

first thing up when i searched this word[cdgone] in www.google.com .
dought it will fix a dvd player that works for most dvd's ,what happens when you try to play a movie.

Thanks for that but no go I'm afraid. The page just comes up says it is connecting and disappears again. I have checked that the IP address and gateway stuff is still there which seems ok as it was not that long ago I installed the netgear wireless router.
I am inclined to think that it is something in the program settings but what I have'nt a clue, everything else seems to work ok but the whole computer slows down when trying to use internet explorer.

not sure what to say ,waht versio nof IE is it do you know ,maybe update it to latest version ,or just use firefox or google chrome

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

how does the computer run with out hard disk.

turn it on ,it wshould run all day ,you just won't be able to do anything with it as it need an operating system install on a harddrive to be used .
you could try downloading linux live cd in my signature ,burn it to disk ,and boot computer to it ,it runs from cdrom and used ram for some file storage ,BUT! it may not work as it sometime looks for a hardrive

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Vista.
Re-install it, apply the updates and learn how to use it.
Even better, upgrade to Win 7.

couldn't aggree more

MSI tech support are royal idiots (already tried them).

There is no basic VGA option but the closest to it is:

Boot Graphics Adapter Priority, which I tried all five of..
1. IGD - Black screen - Had to clear CMOS
2. PCI/IGD - Black screen - Had to clear CMOS
3. PCI/PEG - Black screen - Had to clear CMOS
4. PEG/IGD - Windows still doesn't boot
5. PEG/PCI - Default

And yes.. I have tried to reset BIOS to defaults..

time to try a reinstall i guess to see if you have better luck, and when you get to this part"update settings, time zone, etc" make sure the display settings are correct ,not set to high

hi ,try this ,go to start/control panel /classic mode, classic mode go to internet options /advanced options/way down the bottom click on reset to reset internet explorer settings

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

You can not "Upgrade" to windows XP. Although many including me think XP is better, in Microsoft's eyes you are trying to downgrade. So you are going to have to PURCHASE not bootleg a copy of windows XP the FULL edition not the Upgrade. Put the disk in the drive make sure you boot from CD then when it asks you were you want to install delete the partition that vista is on, this will completly get rid of it. Then install in the unallocated space. But be warned your computers drivers may not be avaliable in XP. For example my video driver does not exist in the XP world, so i can not use it.

echo echo,
also nowhere in there post do they say they want to upgrade to xp

What do you mean? I have Windows 7 installed and working fine, and all of my files are copied over.

What I need to do, is reformat the Drive 0 you see in the picture, without messing up the system boot or anything else.

Can anyone help me?!

hi ,i never backup ,been copying personal file the way you did for years, so your win7 is installed on the 500 gig drive correct ,if yes ,then all you need to do now is right click on 300 gig drive showing vista and chose format ,set as active if and when prompted

Recently I purchased a new laptop with an OS of vista, but i do not need Vista, I have tried to install win xp in vain. Can some one guide me on how to go about it?

Hello and welcome to Daniweb ,first thing you should do is make sure that your laptop manufacture has drivers for winxp before you do anything ,some new laptops with vista ,do not have available xp drivers for some of the d evice in the laptop.
if they do then you make sure laptop is set to first boot cdrom ,do this in bios setup ,then simply boot the laptop to the winxp cd and format the harddrive and install windows xp.
you could also use www.google.com and use search words like ."fresh install winxp" you'll be amazed at the results you will get .
good luck

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

its hard to say from a distance ,if you re-assembled the maching , if you have a addin video card as opposed to onboard video device make sure that the video card is plugged into motherboard correctly ,also make sure that the monitor cable is plugged into the correct place on the back of the tower ,

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Ans:- yes the perticular motherboard is made for peticular processor but the AMD processor can use in ASUS board.

only if the asus board is designed for amd cpu, .
intel and amd haven't used the same socket since the early days when amd firs stold the techonigly from intel .it was socket 7 wayback !

Hi caperjack,

That one is better.

good one .
,i realise what you were doing with the google ,i've used it myself to get people to google for themselfs ,just got to be careful what we find in the search.

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

bob we all know most sites that come up first in google are bullshit sites ,i tried 2 of the links that came up and got driver finding tools or worse , i would not want to download to my computer. best advice to poster is to go to www.dell.com site and use the model of laptop or service tag to get the correct divers.
unless you added this sound device this should be the driver for your dell.

Hi,

I have tried to enter Windows in safe mode but again, it to just opens the safe mode screen, black with 4 safe mode words at each corner of the screen.

at this point ,can you do a ctrl+alt +del,if so when program manger opens go file /new and type in explorer.exe see if you can get it tto open to your desktop, if so then open mycomputer and right click on the hardrive icon and go properties/tools and run a chkdsk

Yeah, it is an older model computer. Like 4 or 5 years old. But does that mean I can't upgrade the RAM at all in it? Or do I just need to find a way around the plastic thing in my way?

4 or 5 yrs is not really old ,i have one that about 8 yrs old and all i did to find the ram was take a small screw drive and remove the covers on the back/bottom ,flip it over should be 2 or 3 small covers with one or two screws ,ram should be under on of them,oh and you may even see a model # on the back

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague
