I think he has used an integrated/onboard video.

See to it all the connections inside the cpu are tight and snugly connected.

No beep code sounds means no case speaker was connected in your system. Try to connect it and let's interpret the beep code.

in his first post he says he's using onboard video!!!

make sure you have the 4 pin Pentium 4 power plug from the power supply plugged in to the board .

My computer has always said i have "351MB" of SDRAM and now it says "375"

what the??

maybe you have onboard video sharing the ram ,and the amount of ram to use for video is set in the bios and maybe the bios got reset to defaults and the default amount setting was lower than a custom setting amount !!
Also maybe you have onboard shared video and you added a pci or agp video card ,tell us more !!

it has always been said that you can use a xp upgrade disk to do a full install ,and yes all you need to do is put in a legit windows disk either win98 or win2000 will do. during the install ,winxp pro install will ask for you to put in the win98 disk as proof of ownership.

just fixed similar /same problem by booting to the winxp recovery console and typing in chkdsk

Hello everyone, I am hoping you can help me with this problem, as I am running out of ideas. I installed Linux on a hard drive in my computer, and then afterwards, I switched back to Windows XP because my girlfriend couldn't get along with Linux very well. The problem I am having is this, my slave drive is no longer accessible through Windows, where it was before the Linux install. It is in BIOS and it is in Device Manager and Disk Management, but not in My Computer. I believe the problem to be that Linux changed the format to Ext2, and now I do not know how to access my data. It is still there, just not useable. I have used Get Data Back which did nothing for me, and I have used Partition Magic, which woud also not allow me any help. If there are any suggestions, I am open to trying anything. Thanks for the help.

-Joe

P.S. - I am hoping there is an easier way than switching back to Linux and then adding to a network with Windows and transferring that way, as there is a lot of information and I only have one computer at the time.

This is what i would do ,disconnect the windows xp drive ,use a win98 boot disk ,boot to dos prompt run FDISK ,and delete non-dos partitions ,create new dos partition and format the drive ,then reconnect the winxp hdd . that is if you have a …

Hi everyone! I have a huge problem with my laptop. Well for one I haven't had ANY problems whatsoever since I bought it a yr ago. I was using it yesterday morning, turned it off, and then last night it just wasn't working anymore. The last thing I downloaded was adobe softwares which I needed and tutorials for photoshop. As far as anything else goes, I'm only online to check e-mails. Yesterday and Adobe software update thing was the last thing I dled. And it had asked me to restart, but I chose restart later and that was it. When I turn it on, it shows the screen where I can chose Run Windowns, RUn Safe Mode bla bla, So when I chose Run Normal the Windows logo appears, the screen will go black and then a blue screen appears with the "problem" but it dissappears really fast that I can't read it, then it restarts all over again. I'm really frustrated because non of the safe modes work, they freeze half way. and I'm afraid I may lose all of my work. Someone help me pretty please!!!!

Thanks

Cely:eek:

no. i had boot.ini problems with previous version so I formatted and reinstalled. so it boots into new version easily but it cant boot into the previous.

So you don't have 2 just the wrong info in the new boot.ini ,easy fix is to change the amount of time it takes to boot to the good one ,right click on mycomputer/properties /advanced /startup and recovery ,settings and lower the time to display operating system to about 5 sec or so .this way you won't have to wait the full 30 seonds or hit the enter key

Someone at work said I could take out my drive, put in an extra one that I have - set up as master, re-attach the buggered one as a slave and then access it like a storage drive. Does this sound like something that I could do without totally screwing it up?
Thanks!

that will work if the extra one you have has windows 98 installed or you will have to install windows on it ,then copy file from buggered one to the extra one for safe keeping ,the knoppix way works with the right righ know how and a usb thumb drive or a good hdd to copy file to.
The easiest thing to do is remove your drive, set it as slave, and install it in a friends computer or one at work and remove you files /data for safe keeping

right click on the desktop/properties/screensavers/power in ther you will find power options ,or you may need to do it in the bios

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

ree reading you first post ,

The computer detects the DVD rom and reads the installation disk (I assume it reads it because the disk spins) The problem is the installation will not autoplay.

are you being aked to hit any key to boot from cd ,when the computer first bootup

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

have you tried the disk in another computer to make sure it is ok

well we don't use the term delete when we refer to removing an OS from the computer ,you will need to reformat with the new to rid the old eventually 1,if you can try booting you new computer to any other version of windows try it .have you tried your new xp 64 cd in another computer to make sure it is working ,all you need to do it put it in a computer that is all ready booted to its windows and see if it auto pops up ,if it does just exit the cd .don't try to install it on the other computer .
I still thinks you problems are releated to improper setup of the drives !the way ther are plugged into the motherboard ,something is wrong!!

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

just because it spins doesn't mean its reading the disk .,does the bios detect the dvd rom is bios set to boot to dvd rom first .

The only thing I have thought of is to take out the hard drive of my old computer and install it on the new one, so the XP would load. Then I would load my new XP X64. But I dont know if that would even work

nope !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Hmm... yeah I guess I have to go through all that. Again. lol (part of the long story)

Anyway, when the laptop hdd is in the desktop pc, should I format it as FAT32? then boot into that FAT32 partition on the laptop with a Windows 98 boot disk, and start the NT installation from DOS ? (because then during NT setup I can format a different partition as NTFS)

It's frustrating because I did that already, only to find that when I tried to install my WiFi card, it required Service Pack 4, and I had no way of getting SP4 onto the laptop. lol That's why I did everything from a desktop PC, hoping it would be easy as pie. :(

format it ntfs ,if you have the sp4 as a file copy it to hdd to and install it later.you can get a nt boot disk here http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Are you saying there's absolutely nothing I can do to save this installation?

Would booting from the Windows NT install floppies, and opting to do a repair make a difference? Would it remove the service packs I installed?

Does anyone know how to boot a Dell Inspiron 3500 from a USB thumbdrive? Then I could install Windows NT from there...

I have install window on 100's of computers ,but only installe NT once and that was a few yrs ago ,if you think you can put the install on a usb device then you should be able to put the hdd back in the other computer and format it and copy the nt install to it ,then put it back in the dell and run the install from the hdd with a windows boot disk .i done this with win95 and 98 on a laptop with no cdrom

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Most OS need to be installed in the computer they are going to be use on !!!! especually if they are in the ntfs file format, its usually a motherboard drivers issue

if i uninstall the display driver, whaat will happen?? will i be able to use the computer or will the display not work. thanks

if you uninstall it in the device manager or through add and remove program, when you reboot computer , windows will load default drivers ,that you can't change the settings on but computer will work ,then you can find or reinstall the correct drivers if you have them
