After running Windows XP for far too many years, I decided to upgrade to Windows 7. I built my PC around 5 years ago: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 667MHz RAM Western Digital Caviar 320GB HD OC GameXStream 600W Power Supply DFI Infinity 975X LGA 775 ATX Intel Motherboard Sapphire Radeon X1900XT 256MB PCI-E x16 Graphics Card I recently purchased a Western Digital 1TB hard drive to install my new operating system on. I've attempted to install this two different ways: 1. I boot my XP system, with the Windows 7 install disk in …

I was wondering how for example drop box or a NAS is coping with the different file systems on different operating systems when sharing a folder? I was reading more about the different file systems and noticed that they ol have their size limits or they all safe their files in a different way. But how is it possible to have shared network folder between these different operating systems and their file systems. Because for example a FAT32 file system cannot have files larger than 4GB. But what if a user with a NTFS file system shares a folder with …

This question covers Windows only. I know Microsoft makes a wide variety of other software products (Office, Exchange, etc.), I'm not interested in them, only in the Desktop Operating Systems. First - unlike the most of you, I've read Microsoft's financial reports, and understand accounting. I know how much money Microsoft has on hand, and how unlikely this scenario is. I'm asking the question to find out what people currently think are their best options, if Windows is no longer available. Second - this is not a troll. I know there are a lot of Windows fans here. I'm not …

I am in a class doing a lab simulation. They are usually very straight forward. But this one, I am left hanging. So either I am really missing something or something went terribly awry. You can only go so wrong with a simulation, though. Set up a RAID 5 using 3 disks using the onboard software. When I try to reboot to Windows, I can't. It won't find Windows. What have I not set up right? Even at the end of the sim, I have done everything it has said, but it still won't boot to Windows. Any ideas? I …

I was thinking about a question I asked last week that someone answered very well. The person said that no program can interface with the hardware in the same was as the OS. That statement prompted another question and what better place to ask it than here, right? Well how is it Operating Systems are made? I only want a general answer. I know most OSes are written in plain ole' C, but what I don't understand is how you develop code for hardware which does not have an OS. How does a person even get the code on to …

**NOTE** This code won't work at the application level. It directly addresses memory at 0xB8000 which will result in a segfault at the application level. This code must be part of an OS or an application in a not-so-secure operating system like DOS, where applications can directly address any part of memory. This is some simple code which facilitates the printing of strings, without needing to use an interrupt like `int 0x10`. This gives you the foundations so that you can better customise aspects of how printing is done, so that you can, say, make special control characters or speed …

I have been using **JavaScript** for almost one and half years and it has turned out to be a language that has enormous *flexibility* and *customizable* features which makes web development a great fun. But one thing I wanted to know is that, if **JavaScript** can be used to write an **OS** that can be run on the **web **?

Hi, I have recently finished building my own computer and am wondering what operating system to get. I was thinking about getting Linux mint 14 because it's free and I like the layout. Ive also heard that there are very few viruses as well. The only thing is that I was unsure weither it would fit my needs. I mainly spend my time social networking and socializing as well as gaming, map development and I also try and learn a bit of basic programming from time to time. I also like to multi task.I wasn't sure about Linux to start …

We are planning to develop a small embedded product, which will be touch-screen and loaded with few applications which we will develop. Those applications will be contacting a database through wi-fi, and displaying data, and also update the database sometimes. The available flash or ROM memory will be limited, around 256 MB or so, to bring down costs. We were planning to use a linux OS for this, but any good open source OS will be fine. Imagine the device will look like a smartphone, but without call facility, browser, messaging, though we are planning to use camera and video …

Hi There is hardly a problem with adding a new hard drive to a desktop computer but how should one update the hard drive on which the operating system is installed? Hard drives fail, I have experienced only one over a period of twenty years and that was replaced under warranty! Even though it was not very old, of course. So protect your computer by replacing your hard drives. The problem is, how does one do that for the system drive? Most systems have OEM installed operating systems and have no discs -when bought used. Geoff

Hi! Does anyone know of any worthwhile machine language OSes to try? I just learned about them in class. It's an interesting idea in terms of speed and portability. I could only find two online, one was in Russian, and the other was MikeOS. Does anybody know any other OSes written in Assembly?? Thanks very much! -curious cat

I just copied My Documents to the RAID and did a backup before deleting My Documents from the non raid disk. I found that my documents couldn't be found by my applications and found this article: [ Click Here](http://www.mydigitallife.info/change-my-documents-folder-default-location-path-in-xp-and-vista/) The procedure is to go to Start point to My Documents right click and select Properties. Select the Target tag and type in the new path to My Documents. Apparently if you …

So I have with me a 64 bit version of windows 7 home premium and my laptop is 64bit when I bought it so I know it is compatible with it. Then I needed to do a reinstallation of my OS because of some driver problems. Hey! I sorta, kinda want to make a REALLY simple OS that would be made in c/c++ (c++ hopefully). I realize that it would take a lot of effort, and I would need a lot of time. But I am willing to put forth the required effort and time, so, where should I start. I was thinking that I could use a pre-made kernel and boot loader and not do those (as I don't want to learn assembly unless there is not way around it. Also, are there any good things that would allow me to compile the code into …

Hi there I was wandering how a virtual Os exactly works and if it is classed as easier or harder then building a kernel for a normal OS? I have read briefly about having virtual hardware and having to create additional files etc. I have also read about creating one that acts as an emulator over the top of another OS. Does a virtual Os have the same access to the hardware as a installed OS? Or does the virtual OS have to communicate with the installed OS to gain access to memory etc? If I wanted to create a …

I am writing this thread not to ask how to make an operating system, but to say how to make an operating system. There always seems to be new threads created asking how to make an operating system. The simple answer There is no simple answer. Making an operating system is hard work. You need to do research - lots of it. Try OSDev (http://wiki.osdev.org/) - that has tonnes of information to use, from bootloaders to sound drivers. Starting small You can’t start by designing an GUI with amazing new features. You need to think about how your system boots, …
