My machine is over a year old, no real issues. Today I go to boot up and it sticks on the BIOS Statup screen indefinitely. No power to keyboard/mouse.

Any sound from the bios, what is the name of the bios manufacturer, is this a laptop or desktop

ASUS P5W Deluxe Mobo

Could it be the power supply? Any other likely culprits?

Dude, my laptop got the same problem...... Sometimes no display at all n sometimes when i plug off n replug the battery it stucks on the cmos startup screen!!! Each time it stucks on the cmos startup screen, got a beep sound ( CODE: 3 short - 1 long - 2 short )...... I'm sure that the LCD's OK!!! I got 2 DDR, so i tried to change the slot, just place 1, and....... but there's no changes except the beep code changes ( 3 short - 3 long )....... Any clue guys? I suspect DMA failure or motherbord prob......

go to control panel>administrative tools>services look for system restore ensure it's started and set to automatic.. then go to Computer management>disk management, see which drive is set to active primary(system). Also turn off monitoring on the f drive

PS do you have any data on the F: drive?

you fail to try any advise you get, Norton and AVG are 2 different program , surenson PC is not having a problem, YOURS IS, it does not hurt to try, if we are making suggestiong and your refuse to follw how are you going to get the problem resolve. YOU seem to know the solution so why not get it fix.

I recently purchased a new hard drive after mine crashed. (I have a Dell from a few years back; got a "Missing or Corrupt System 32" message).

I have confirmed the hard drive was installed correctly (shows model number as master in bios). I was running windows 2000. Made the six boot disks, but receive "Disk I/O" error message after running first disk. I have an Dell XP operating disk from my wife's newer computer. I tried using this as well, but get a "no bootable devices found" message.

Do I have to go out and buy and new OS CD to get my computer running. It just seems like there has to be an easier way. Maybe I created XP boot disk instead of 2000. Does it matter? Shouldn't I just be able to install XP from my wife's disk?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!!!

>>>>Made the six boot disks
what operating system were the boot disk made for?
windows 2000 with only boot a windows 2000 instalation.
>>>>Disk I/O" error message after running first disk.
this mean the floppy is damage, you woild have to make that one over.
>>>>no bootable devices found" message.
you have to set the bios to first boot from the cd drive.
However, if this disk is not bootable, you would ahve to get a bootable cd to run the installation, in the same breath, you can make the bootable floppy and use a non bootable xp …

you can make it 40G but what else are you planning to install, this temp folder in window sthats 14g, you can delete the files, they are just remnants from installed programs. most willl never be used again. as for the AMD 64 stuff in the winsxs directory i would assume it had to deal with the type of processor you are using and the file are there in the event yo are actually running 64bit applications throught the proccessor.

they are mostly referred to as circle, i live in ANY and can only remember encountering 3, Columbus Circle in Manhathan, One in City Island and one in New Rochelle. they are indeed very rare in the US

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

yeah you can locate the page file to a different drive that what the opeating system is installed on

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

i suggets no less that 100G for vista Microsoft suggest 40 for ultimate, but base on what you plan to run and bare in mind the pagefile it will create.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

not really, it can catch some but not the very elusive ones, see if you can remove windows defender then and give that a try

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

yes it can, it is recommended that you dont run both at the same time especially if they are going to start with windows. uninstall one and see what happens

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

you might be having a conflick with windows defender and avg, uninstall/disable one and see what happen, also i would try and shutdown some of those startup programs, you have way too much starting up with windows, and most not needed.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

did you disable the firewall?........can you log into your router?, see if the ip/domain is blocked. the other PC that can access the site from home, check the internet setting on them and match this vista pc to it.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

can i safely assume these are all wireless connection. go into IE and change the security setting for local intranet. set every thing to dafault. and try to connect. then on the connection tab ensure that no proxy setting are enable, do you have any firewall on the computer. disable then try connecting after changing all setting.

it is facinating to read these post about driving and speed and roundabouts, ( not called that in USA) and they are very few, i guess 99% of US driver would fail a driving test in england,,,,,, yet 100% of english would pass in the USA, hmmm,,, personally i was self taught, with a stick shift, came to the US and ace the test, if you want speed in NY you would have to hit the 87 going toward canada.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

oh my that is quite alot of programs runnig when you startt he pc, what exactly are you doing when the BSOD happen, browse, games, word processor, do you have windows defender running on the PC? does this PC have a pci video card or onboard? how many stick of memory does it have?

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

is this a laptop, or desk top. are you able to access the site on this same vista pc when u take it to school or work??????

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

go to setting for the email account, do a test send/receive, if that goes through then it's not norton, if not turn off norton, then try again, if thats work you have to into norton seetings and allow pop and smtp ports 110 and 25 by defaults. and also allow outlook to access the mail.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

turn off restore point, on both drive, restart pc, then turn on for the c drive ony and create a restore point.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

seem like a video problem, is the video was a PCi card or an onboard vga reseat the card or check the settings in the bios.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

if this is an award bios it's the video failure. check the video card ( if u have one) or load all default in the bios and try again

you are one of the lucky ones who still have a emachine that work, (if it's still working) those machine usually crap out ater 1 years, mainly due to either power supply or MOBO

Hi guys, I'm having a strange problem with my SATA drive and I am totally at a loss at what to do. 2 days ago I had been using 2 hard drives, 1 80GB IDE Seagate hd with Windows XP and my games & programs on it, the other was a SATA 160 GB Seagate which has my mp3s and videos etc on it. I had had that setup for about 2 years with no problems until yesterday, my 80GB IDE hard drive became corrupted, I don't know how either. But after spending a few hours trying to get it to work, I went and bought a new 160GB IDE Seagate hard drive which was to just be for the OS, programs & games.
I installed XP on it but my SATA drive isn't showing up in Windows. I'm using a Gigabyte 7N 400 Pro2 mobo and I installed the Sil3112 SATA driver off the CD that came with the mobo but to no avail. I have 60GB of data on my SATA drive that hasn't been backed up yet (yeah, I know, stupid of me), and I want it back. Any ideas on how to get XP to see my SATA drive?

Thanks,
Alex.

base on whats in red how can you install windows on the drive and it's not showing up.

there should be a small hjole in the back where you can use a pen or small pointed object to hol in for a few sec ( 10 sec maybe) then release when all the light on all the ports lights up, once you reset the router try autosetting for dhcp on all the pc.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

how much memory you have on the system in total, with all the stick installed.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

tell us the amout of memory you have, and the CPU speed. you might have to open the case and check the fan on the CPU

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

seem like you are trying to format the HDD from within the operating system ,right???????? this will not work as Suspishio stated, give a little more info

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

i have 2 problems..one with a desktop alienware aurora, i tried to full reinstall windows xp, once i enter the set up screen and press enter to begin installation, i get an error saying windows does not detect a harddrive, though bios detects it, aswell as the p.o.s.t..im assuming its missing drivers am i right? its a sata harddrive and a nforce motherboard , i really have no idea where to get these drivers , if my assumptions are correct,

the second problem is with another alienware system, my laptop, once i boot , and the system conduc the P.o.s.t, after it says " bios not installed"..then operating system not found". can it be the motherboard? the ide cable? or the harddrive, i doubt its the harddrive, i tried 3 different harddrive all preloaded with windows xp..still the same problem, so im down to motherboard or ide cable? or maybe someone else i dont know about , but you do, so if you have any info, any advice on either problem, i would really appreciate it , thank you in advance

on the first issue is this a raid setup? if not you would not need driver for the HDD, use the cd/floppy that came with the HDD and set it up for use with an operating system. if the bios detech it and the operating system does not, chances are the drive head/MBR is damage. the cd that came with the drive have a utility to reset the drive …

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

first why are you useing static setting for the ip, change all the setting to automatic, then release ip on the pc, then shut down in this order, PC, modem, router. then reboot modem, wait 3 min, then router, wait 3 min, then pc. then you can connect to the router.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

what is the ip address you are getting in the XP boot. do you have the correct drivers for the wireless,

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

you need to find out what type of sound driver you need,
what is the name (manufacturer) of the pc,
is the sound onboard( meaning made into the mother board) or a sound card ( installed in the pCI slot.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

if you have forgotten your admin password you cannot get back into windows, you would ahve to do a clean install, or you can try a search on the net,

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

basically there is no way to do this on the physical machione, as there would be no drivers or printer on the pc, the only other way is, as Jbennett suggest, use a VM machine, like VMware or microsoft virtual pc or you can use snagit ro captuer the screen on the vm machine, or as the last resort, use a video camera to capture the process on the pc.

Im trying to convert a word (2007) doc to a pdf (acrobat version 8) and have pathed directory links but sthey wont show up in the pdf. Is there anyway to convert a doc to a pdf with these links in tact?

underline section what does that mean, to convert from doc to pdf you have to either have the conversion plugin installed in office or use a 3rd party software like cute pdf.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

your original pst file cannot be deleted throught outlook, you have to find the directory that has the pst file then deleted or relocated it, ( i suggest relocate) then start outlook it will give you a message saying cannot open ("drive letter:\ document and setting\ application data................\....\*.pst") this will depend on how you have config outlook before. then click ok and then point outlook to the directory where you have your new account pst file saved., whether you use IMAP or POP the outlook file will be pst.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

If you are able to boot with a floppy the Mobo is NOT dead. id the CD and HDD connected to the same cable, ( is the HDD IDE or SATA connection)

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

i know you say only doc file but to be specific can you attach and excel file .xls, .html, rtf. and just so you know the server version of windows are set to the highest defaults security, to use it as a regular operating system you have to turn on a whole lot of setting

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

check the power setting for the monitor too, monitor and cpu power setting are seperate. so set both to always on.

when you hit a key or move the mouse, does the monitor comes on

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

well atleast you are getting power from the power supply, but i can tell you right now the mobo is dead, if you have access to another pc you can verify this, take out the power supply, use in another machine,

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

the folder youa re trying to access is it shared

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

remove the battery, unplug the power supply, leave off for a few hours, then reconnect the battery and the power suply, make the to charge the battery. before turning on.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

your pc is going into power save and not able to come back out, you need to check the power supply, is it at or atx, and check the settings in the control panel for power, make sure it is not set to a presentation, but to a desk top, also chek the energy saving feature for the monitor, like turn off after 1 hours after no activity, set it to always on, see that will fix the problem

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

most laptop have a built in power protection , if the battery is no charge it will not stay on with only the power to the wall. as for the loose power connection, you have to get that fix, this can cause severe damage to the pc, and kill the power source. try to leave the off and charge the battery up until the indicator show green for the battery, when you get it to boot go into power setting in control poanel and change the setting to a desk top pc, ( no power save)

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

go into the bios set it to all defaults, then look for the section that has a virus scanner turned on, turn it off, while in the bios check to make sure the HDD is detected.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

remove the battery, connect the power cord, and turn on, if that work you might have to get the battery fully charge, some laptop have a built in power protection, meaning if the battery is not charge you might not get any power to the unit.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

this might sound dumb but did you check the power cable ( where the PC is plugged in)

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

basically you type a code like this.
[AutoRun]
open=name of file
icon= this is to assosiate an icon with the auto run usually a .ico file ( optional)

However base on what you want to do you have to create an hybrid cd, the type that will run data a music at the same time you need a program like nero or roxio esy cd burner or roxio toast.
