why not just connect the HD to another machine and pull the files out? Vista looks like too raw a-system still, if you're into music XP-MCE is for you

call dlink support, there is as far as I remember some software they have exactly for this kind of occurence. if possible, get rid of d-link and get linksys/level1/belkin/cisco

errr, I'm not sure this forum is the place for cracking questions. I'd suggest looking into russian warez sites. I may be wrong, but DaniWeb looks like a purely legit portal.

if the HDD is plugged in correctly, and it's not detected, you need to take it to a lab, and be prepared to pay up to $1000 for the data recovery.

first you should try to manually set your IP to your network's numbers. after that, if your hardware is functional, you will be able to ping the router from the inside. after that, if the gateway is set right, and the dns resolving works you'll be able to ping google.com …

replacing the paste is a-ok, it gets burned out with time, and Intel's native coolers don't have such a good paste on them to begin with. I've had the same problem with my computer, and I bought a new CPU cooler, some Zalman $40 model, scratched the old paste off …

first thing you do is disconnect all HDDs and try to turn the pc on. if that works - obviousely the HDD is the problem. else (talking like a real programmer now) try to remove the ram from the slots and turn the computer on. if you don't hear beeps, …

if the MB can't recognize the HD, you should look into the manufacturer's website for a bios update. that might update the MB's bios to a newer version capable of working with hard disks up to ~132Gb

if the hard drive can be read, I usually use R-Studio for the recovery. if the problem is on the hardware level, then you really need a lab. can't advise on which, except for the HD manufacturer's at the plant

what you really need is to set up the main PC for ICS (internet connection sharing). the typical way is for it to have an internet connection and a WiFi card set to ad-hoc mode so that the WiFi cards of the laptop and the PC get connected, letting the …

don't know about the US or the UK, but around here degrees don't matter much. what does matter is the experience. I haven't been unemployed for over a couple of weeks since I finished my army service, and the MCSE I've got was done just in order to have a …

it will work. but if you use ONLY sata, you will get a much better performance, which IMO beats the extra 30Gb.

a little correction: buying just 1Gb is cheaper then buying a few smaller sims. the question being whether or not your MB supports dual channel memory. If it does the better option is to get 2x512, make sure you buy two of the same manufacturer, preferrably from the same production …

no problem with such setup. one thing you have to keep in mind though - some CD-RW drives don't function well when in slave mode. no idea why really, just an observation.

the best advice for choosing a distro I've ever heard sounded something like "choose the distro best known by the closest *NIX guru to you". Actually there are good sites like howtoforge.com and rocksproject.org that would guide you through setting up several different server types fitting your purpose. Since all …

sounds more like a hardware problem - the router/hub getting disconnected all the time because of corroded or shaky contacts or because of a bad power supply that makes it shutdown and restart all the time

1.5 times the RAM is the normal PF size for both windows and *nix. In wondows though, it's not really used-up space on the HD unless the computers runs out of RAM to use. Dynamic allocation's the correct word here. So it is only recommended to keep those 1.5Gb free …

the easiest way (the one BSA usually uses) is to try to update the computer. if WGA starts popping up - windows is illegal there. question is what you want to do about it, since I've no idea what the legislation on pirate software is like where you live.

have you tried connecting the damaged disk as a second HDD on an operational XP machine (or just boot with a live cd like WinPE/BartPE/Winternals/Knoppix/Ubuntu/etc)? if it can boot and see your partitions on the damaged drive, you can try to use R-Studio to recover whatever is recoverable. Another question …

a better choice would be to change both hdds jumpers to CS (cable select) that eliminates all possibilities of a misconfiguration, and also works better on some MBs. if that fails, I'd take the HDD back to the store for a replacement
