does he log into AD or locally? during logon, the prompting for username/password window can be expanded, it is possible your user logged in locally, and all the settings are in the domain enabled profile. so you will need to re-login into the domain instead of the locla pc

it's impossible to test the drives in an array separately, on the FS level. if you have a raid0, be ready to lose all data on both drives, should you lose one of them.

yes, run a script that would test the particular PC for connectivity, say once every hour. once you get a ping reply, or snmp trap trigger, run another script to connect and backup
