search for the "hosts" file in the I386 folder & rename it (like hosts.old or hosts.dec.03.2k3 or whatever), then clear cookies & cache. if prob persists ping whotv.com via DOS prompt (really a console window, no DOS in WinXP, ah but nomenclature dies a slow death...) to get it's ip, if u dont already know it, and put the ip address in the address bar & c if it pulls up the url or not.

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

3kdad,
Faranth might be right on this one (as well ;) ) but try searching for "*dll*exe*" (w/o the quote marks); nothin should show up, but if something does its a virus for sure as no such file type really exists. r u getting any other type of error screens/random reboots? sluggish sys? undeliverable emails that u dont recall sending 2beginw/?

...The conection out the of the modem is usb...

...was what amd25 originally stated, although i wouldnt be surpised if it has an rj45 port as well.

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

jreyes1, before you go ripping out the usb root hubs in DevMgr/Universal Serial Bus Controllers make sure you have all the device drivers for your usb devices - the root hub will automatically re-install on boot up as caperjack mentions but you'll need to install the drivers for the devices yourself. helps if your using a ps/2 mouse/keyboard when you rip out the root hubs btw.

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

...I was going to delete it, but am afraid to, might cause boot failure?...

seems to me that with the probs you're experiencing you might want to do a comprehensive back up just to be save. btw, did you try runing scanreg /restore & selecting a date prior to the attempted WinXP install? make sure you know what that command does before running it.

jjunn82 states: "Now on my desktop Im able to see the notebook in network places but not on my notebook."

do you mean that you can see the notebook in network places, but that you cannot see it in Windows Explorer?

jjun82 states: "But im pretty sure its my notebook problem because networking doesnt even work on an ethernet LAN as well as Wireless"

please clarify this is i have no idea (well, barely an idea) of what your trying to say.

to get a better idea of what's happening get to a "DOS Prompt"/console window, type in "ipconfig/all" & hit enter and post back everything that you get for both machines.

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

what (protocol) bindings are on the 4th pc?
if you connect the 4th machine directly to the internet, bypassing the lan entirely, can the browser accesss www?
what firewall do you have, if any, besides the firewall settings for Proxy 5.0?

Summary:
I too run a Motorola Surfboard SB4100 and put in probably 20 hours worth of work only to still be unable to connect. WAN light would never light. Tech support went through the old "check the cables" etc. and the only thing they knew to do was tell me to "reboot, reboot". I finally returned it and bought a D-Link DI-704P in which I was told was comparible in Firewall protection. I didn't have an easy time setting this one up either but in about 3 hours I was connected. Simply needed to clone the MAC address and run winipcfg, release and renew ethernet adapter settings and I was on. Don't know the problem with the compatibility between the SB4100 modem and the BEFSX41, but there is something going awry there.

...and TallCool1's obvious expertise in this matter not withstanding... i was told to check for a good crt by making the crt show a white background and ablack (blank) display; the logic being that it takes good phosphur (sp?) quality to display a bright white and that it takes good contrast masking to display a truly black/extremely dark gray blank (but powered) screen. jm2c

unless ur planing on changing ur mobo keep what u have (on board or pci)

First off my computer spec's : HP XT 868 running windows XP pro, 1.2ghz, 512ram, 80gig hd and a geforce4 TI 4400. Now onto the problem.
All of a sudden one day I woke up in the morning went to boot up computer and nothing happened, well something happened this: Computer turns on fine, no weird noise or nothing. Well when I turned it on it goes to the blue HP screen makes a booting up noise which is normal then straight to a black screen with the cursor blinking on the top left corner and thats it, it wont boot up to windows, i recieve no error messages. I opened the computer up nothing looked fried or out of place, I disconnected and re-connected everything and still encounter the same problem of going back to the black screen with the blinking cursor and never booting to windows. I tried entering safe mode( didnt work), I tried putting in the sys recovery cd's that came with the computer and win xp cd, then restarting but nothing helps. Anything from you guys would be great since I have info on my computer with is very important to me. Thanks for any help you can give me.

have u tried booting from a boot disk/CD?

as stated else where (by caperjack? not sure) iedll.exe is neither a normal file component of IE nor Windows (seeing how a true dll file is not executable) and as such your pc is likely infected with a trojan. do a search on the site for "iedll.exe" as well as "ie dll.exe" and you should find the appropriate posts.

Hi all,

I've finally decided to get serious about learning JavaScript, and to facilitate this endeavor I've unearthed my copy of Danny Goodman's JavaScript Bible, 3rd Ed. (circa 1995, for which I no longer have the companion CD), but on reading the first chapter alone Ive realized just how outdated this tome is (with references to IE & NN v.2.0, Win3.1, "Digital's" Alta Vista, etc), so I am now considering purchasing the updated 4th Ed. The only problem with that is that I've read the reviews on Amazon.com and, judging by many of the reviews, it apparently doesn't live up to it's billing. I'm wondering if any of you have read the entire 4th Ed., or at least a substantial portion of it, and if so what your impressions are of it. Along with that, are there any particular references and/or tutorials - online or hardcopy- that you'd recommend I consider, or avoid, in acquiring this new-to-me skillset? Appropriate comments greatly appreciated!

I have a cable internet connection via USB and cable modem. I installed an ethernet card to connect via ethernet. I plug the ethernet cable to my computer and to the cable modem and no internet. Do I need to change the settings on my computer in order to connect to the internet using my new ethernet connection? If so what do I need to do? Thanks in advance!

Damon

before u go through everything else, try the basics first. most cblmdms are designed to regain a connection if it gets lost if at all possible. one of the mechanismisms (sp?) for doing that is remember the MAC (Media Access Code). if u dont clear the memory on the cblmdm it will still think its supposed to communicate w/ur usb connection & disregard the ethernet (rj45) connection.

1) identify the lights, and what they are doing, on ur cblmdm (cm) that indicate it has a connection to ur isp
2) shutdown pc (not absolutely necessary, but u might as well)
3) unplug cm pwr cord, making sure all lights go off on cm
4) make sure u have only either the usb or (in ur case crxtreme89h) the rj45 cbl connected to cm (if using usb wait to plug into pc until after pc is back up,or as its said, "hot" - but wait for that step; if ur using rj45 then u can plug it in now ("cold") or later when pc is up ("hot"))

have u tried deleting cookies & temp files (also select "all offline content")?

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

Does this apply to Win98?? Im afraid to do this in case it removes IE6 :( ... Doug

.
yes, it works w/Win98. the process does not actually uninstall the program; it only fixes, or attempts to fix actually, whatever files it identifies as being a component of IE and overwrites whatever corrupted files it detects. it safe, but it doesnt fix every problem either.

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

not sure if this will work, but try moving the pc & monitor (w/keyboard & mouse) temporarily to the furthest spot/considerable distance away from it's current location. if it still jiggles then it's probably nothin to do w/ur son's entertainment gear. if that doesnt solve the issue some1 esle needs to help u on this; if it does clear it up then move the stuff back towards ur office in 1/2 distant increments (might be easier if the equip was on some type of STABLE cart) until the issue reappears - thats the distance ur SON needs to move his stuff away from YOUR wall!!! ;)

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

its possible, but it would be WAY slow!

ur far better off get two cheap nics (network interface cards - make sure u get the right type probably PCI, but if ur systems r kinda old they may need ISA cards) and a cross-over rj45 cable

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

in explorer go to tools /internet options/advanced ,scroll down to security and check the box next to empty temp internet file when browser is closed .saves you from having to do it manually !:)

LOL! thanks, SO easy & yet... :o ;)

I recently got rid of the blaster worm with the download from Microsoft.com.

Now the worm has gone. Everytime I try to open the internet I get "This page cannot be displayed" Message even though my connection to the internet is running.

The two computers are in the bottom right hand corner of the screen and are both lighting up every so often so my connection must be fine...but the computer is not letting me open any web pages.

Can someone please give me some advice on what to do.

Regards,

LLDJ

try going to add remove programs, select IE, select add/remove, select repair IE & hit ok

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

hmmm, i havent looked into in QUITE awhile, but i thought Win98 only truly supported up to 192MB or something like that, and once you went beyond that you actually started degrading performance... :?: :?: :?:

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

the firewall comment was specifically for the WinXP sys, not the Win98 sys. on the Win98 sys, without ipx bindings but with tcp/ip bound to the nic do winipcfg & notate your default gateway. with that do the following:

1) ping 127.0.0.1 - essentially useless for determing whether or not u have a connection, but if it fails either your nic, slot, drivers or OS is hosed;
2) whoops, was gonna have you ping your default gateway, but youre actually P2P & not really on a LAN... hmmm, skip getting the default gateway, but stilll ping as per 1) above. if that's ok then do the following:

1) if at all possible locate appropriate Win98 CD (you don't absolutely have to have it, but there's an ever so slight chance that if you dont have it Win98 wont find the files it needs in the cabs)
2) right click the Network Places icon, left click properties, remove *ALL* bindings, click ok (if u get sys msg stating network not complete click yes to continue) & then No to restart;
3)access network props as in step 2); select your nic, click add, dbl click protocol, on left select Microsoft, then after that on right window pane select tcp/ip (may need to scroll to bottom), click ok, click ok again down & bottom of dialog box, & say yes to restart;
4) thats right, dont rebuild ICS until after u resolve tcp/ip issues;

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

1) get a real firewall, even if it's a www freebie & disable the XP firewall cause its truly useless
2) are you using IPX on the Win98 (sys B) because you cant ICS or because you simply cant ping?

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

well, its nice that youre using a LAN, but that doesn't really tell me whether or not you're using tcp/ip. i'll make that assumption since it's highly probably, but not given, that you are. from the login that cannot connect, do the following (for instructs requiring you to enter data do not type the quote marks unless specificied):

1) open a console window (old style dos prompt) (do that by goint to "Start" clicking on "Run" type "cmd" & hit "OK" or hit your Enter key)
2) type "ping 199.181.135.201" & hit your Enter key; if you get anything other than 4 replies post to this thread the exact information that is returned, otherwise
3) type "ping abc.com" & hit your Enter key; if you get anything other than 4 replies post to this thread the exact information that is returned, otherwise
4) type "ftp 131.172.2.2 & hit your Enter key; post to this thread the exact information that is returned

...On the mashine A IP is 192.168.1.100 firewall unchecked, on the mashine B --IP is set up "obtaine automatically"...

from the above excerpt it seems that you have one sys configured to use a set (static) ip address and the other one is set to obtain the ip address automatically (DHCP). although i don't think this is the cause of your current problem (although it may well be), having your network setup this way can definitely cause connectivity problems. the reason for this, and again going by the excerpt above, if sys A is confiugred with a set ip of 192.168.1.100 and sys B is set to automatically obtain an ip from the linksys router, the router has no way of knowing that sys A has that ip address. as a result, if by chance the router gives sys B that same ip address (192.168.1.100) via DHCP, you're going to have a headache. (fyi, you can check what ip address each sys is using by going into the network props for the nic, clicking on the support tab and then clicking the details button.) i'd recommend that you configure both systems for DHCP (automatically obtain ip, and depneding on your needs, DNS server address as well), and see if by chance your prob clears up. if not, try bypassing the router & connect one of the sys's directly to the cm for an appropriate length of time and let us know if the prob …

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

if your other pc's are running fine then it's likely a pc specific problem, but to rule out the router u may try connecting the problematic pc directly to ur modem for an appropriate length of time (say 2 or 3 times as long as the problem normally takes to rear its ugly head). if it recurs w/o the router its a pc prob, if it doesn't then it likely is a router prob (firm upgrade?) let us know what t/s steps uv already taken

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

what did u have intsalled physically in the pc when you upgraded to WinXP? others have stated that w/the AMD in particular and i believe in conjunction with XP it is adviseable to only have your hdd, ram & vid card installed on OS install and then install all other devices (ps XP gets a little antsy if u install a bunch of hardware all at once)

I just got xp and reformated my hard drive and installed as per instructions from my friend. Everything worked right. I shut down the computer for the night and the next morning when I started it and went to the internet as soon as I hit the connect button on the DUN the computer freezes no mouse movement and ctrl-alt-del does not work. I had to reinstall xp to get it to work. Nothing I did would fix it. If I leave my computer on then I can get to the internet with no problem but if I shut the computer off then when I go back it freezes presses the connect button. I have reinstalled xp 7 times now and have decided to leave my computer on and turn off the monitor. Any suggestions would be really appriciated.
