Run a google search on crucial memory. There a ram shop and have a wizard where you can tell it what pc u have or u can download a thing so it checks it for itself

The first part is the version so 2.6.18-4 is better than 2.6.18-3 the last part (which is usually something likee 686) indicates what cpu it is optimised for. e.g a 686 optimised kernel is better than a standard 486 one (provided your cpu can handle it)

maybe the components are drawing too much power. remove unnecessary cards and drives and then boot it to see if it makes any improvement

sounds like either a broken drive or a bad conenction if even the BIOS cannot access it. Most laptop drives are removable (click a switch or something) - try taking it in and out

Hit f8 repeatedly as soon as the pc starts up and choose safe mode. Wait until it boots into safe mode then log in as administrator go into control panel, select your user and choose to get rid of your password

pcs generally have 1 or 2 ide channels each channel can hold 2 devices, a master and a slave. you tell a device whether its a master or a slave by moving the position of a jumper on the pins at the back of the drive
