Hello,

Welcome to DaniWeb Kevin.

It is important to remember that moderators are human beings too, and just like a referee in Basketball, sometimes we blow the whistle too soon, and other times, we let the game get too rough and people start throwing punches. Moderation is not an easy thing to do.

I would like to think of my position along the lines of "ambassador".

There is a lot more to DaniWeb than the Geeks Lounge. Hopefully, you will return, and participate in the community that is here.

Hello Tronik,

Your HP printer is wired through the network, and the windows computers can see it. So I am assuming that it is on a Jet Direct card.

OS X can print to it via IP or via Appletalk. As you mentioned earlier that the printers worked before in OS 9, I assume that the needed Postscipt SIMM is also installed. Very good.

Try printing through IP. Give the printer an IP number, and then see if your OSX box can ping it. IF so, try to build the printer in the Print Control panel.

Hello,

I think it is more important to defend yourself from infection, instead of detecting it.

Eliminate Microsoft Outlook, IE Explorer, and Macros, and you have a good solid start on defense. Run behind a firewall that prevents network intrusion and port compromises. Keep up your patches for all of your operating systems.

I run with Eudora for email, and Firefox / Safari for web work. Open Office for word processing and spreadsheets. Any common viruses that hit my Linux box or Macintosh fall harmlessly aside.

I am liking more and more about AVG, and also work with AdAware for the one Windows box in the house.

I have found cases where Norton took a good week to get ahold of a virus that was running around work here.

Hello,

I am guessing that you are running a mobile phone system that can cruise the web with some sort of browser. That is handy.

You did not mention what kind of OS your computer was. IF it was Linux, you could program up a website with pre-defined software tasks, and put some buttons on the sheet so that your phone can click on the button, and execute a command. You will need special software to do this.

I see a couple concerns though. You are going to want to code in security for your setup, so that no one in particular can take your computer hostage and run with it. You need to think about security, and how the computer will respond to your commands, to know if it was properly "received" or not.

Your project is not going to be particularly easy or right off the shelf.

The motor control depends on what kind of interface it has. You will need to research the various kinds of electronic controls of the motor and see if they are serial bus controlled, USB controls, or perhaps parallel port controls.

From there, with the right amount of time and skill, you can achieve what you are doing.

Hello,

Welcome to DaniWeb.

If you are really using OSX 10.0 or 10.1, you will want to upgrade promptly to 10.2 or 10.3 10.0 and 10.1 had horrible printing problems, and were not stable and suitable. There were days that I had 10.1 going on my laptop, and I gritted my teeth so harshly, that I formatted it off, and returned to OS 9.

As for exporting your addressbooks, that should work. Not sure exactly how, but if you can bring up Outlook in Classic, you should have some options on exporting. You will need to expirement with that.

As for IE, you can open a folder in the OS 9 file system (I do not remember which one) where the IE bookmark files are all listed. You should then be able to drag the bookmark onto a Safari window, and have the webpage draw. THen make the Safari bookmark.

Hello,

This is wonderful folks! :) Looks like we have some good things going here. I'll add another grilling recipie: Pork Tenderloin

Pork Tenderloin (PTL) is just like beef, however, it is white meat, and you have to cook it through in order to avoid problems (chicken has to be cooked through too). PTL, depending on the size, can serve 2 - 3 people per loin, and here in Wisconsin at least, it is much more affordable.

If you have a BW3's around (http://www.buffalowildwings.com/index2.asp) and you like your pork with some ZAZZ, go and get a bottle of their Smoky Southwestern sauce. It has a nice kick, and gives complementary taste to the pork. Have some Ranch around, just as if it was a chicken wing.

I like to use a little bit of Lawrey's seasoning, or sometimes some Garlic powder. Don't get to crazy with salts though.

Light the grill, and put it on low to medium heat. Pork has to be cooked completely, and if the grill is too hot, it will start to burn the outer edges. Let the grill warm up. Place the PTL onto the grill, and cook it for 25 - 30 minutes, depending on heat and size. You will want to "flip" it every 5 - 7 minutes or so. As the meat cooks, it will become less "squishy" and more solid of a slice. Cook with the cover on.

A few minutes before removing, …

I what I am also having trouble with are the Levitra, Viagra, and Cialis ads. Amazing that the FCC will allow that material, but you cannot drink a beer on TV. Also notice that there are no cigarette ads on TV. Maybe it is time to do that for drugs that deal with the sexual function.

kc0arf 68 Posting Virtuoso Team Colleague

Hello,

It is possible there is disk corruption, it is also possible a file or two is out of whack, and also possible for a permissions problem.

Boot up with the OS X CD-ROM. Instead of starting an install, go to the Apple menu in the corner, and choose disk utility. Run a repair on the hard drive. Then run a repair of the permissions. If it doesn't allow you to repair permissions, then try to reboot with your hard drive, and then try the repair permissions option.

If you have access to another Mac, and have a network running, it might be possible to access your files through FTP or telnet or SSH, if you had those programs running. All depends on what is enabled on the machine.

You might also be able to boot with the spacebar down, and that should put you into a "safemode" type of format.

Worst case, if your Mac will boot Mac OS 9, try booting to 9, and if you have a network available, try copying the files to a server volume before re-installing.

Hello,

If you had a broadcast storm going on, all of your network devices would be nearly paralyzed, and you would be able to sniff packets from any node on the network (because broadcasts hit every devices, regardless if it is a switch or a hub as a network combining hardware device).

For packet sniffing, there is a freeware tool available with linux -- Ethereal. Of course, you would see all of the packets and what they are doing... although you might have to scroll through lots of data to get to it.

Might want to ask yourself if there were any devices recently added to the network, or did someone replace a patch cable in the closet, or perhaps at a desktop? What change was made? You might also have a virus running around.... a few weeks ago, we got hit with bling (also called Spybot) that tried to pound it's way across the Windoze machines. Brought the network to a near halt.

Good Luck with it,

Christian

Hello,

I agree with you Narue that an isolated snippet is the best way to identify and focus on a logic problem within the code. Quick glance, maybe see a variable passed by reference, or a typo in a function call. That is easier than downloading the whole shebang and putting it together. Then again, if the poster is rather ambiguous, I would rather have the whole shebang, load it into my environment, and hit the run button. You are correct that it is a lot of work.

DaniWeb is the first web-based forum like this that I have participated in at the moderator level. I have done parts here and there for other locations; most of my roots are in USENET groups. I am a casual code-slinger; I mostly code Linux BASH scripts to do system admin things. I am a network administrator that dabbles in code for hobby and curiousity.

Unfortunately, DaniWeb doesn't have any written guidelines for this forum (C++ Coding) that specify when to do an attachment vs. a chunk of lines vs. a posting of a particular function. Then again, I am not certain that a lot of new people stop to read the README on the forum; we have witnessed this type of posting before. I also strongly believe that the people needing the help do not know how to ASK for the help... thus posts like the one that started this discussion.

Hi,

I don't think it was rude for him to make the files as attachments. At least he made an effort to include code that could otherwise been missing. I would rather grab the attachments insted of reading text without the code tags.

As for not providing a description for what is going on, and where his suspicions of error are, I agree. Is it not compiling? What are the errors?

I think his post is along the lines of calling the auto mechanic, and leaving a message that the car won't start. What should the mechanic bring to the vehicle, jumper cables, or a can of gas (in case the tank is empty)?

For his growth, I hope the poster returns with conversation describing the problem in detail. Again, I do not think it was rude of him to provide his code via attachments; If attachments were rude / harassing, we would not allow them in this forum.

Hello,

I think it depends on what a child is. Watching with us were 5 and 9 year olds. I think that is too soon to be exposed to that sort of conduct. Also for liquer.

Around the teenage years, I think it *IS* important to discuss topics of sex with the young adults. Also, involve them with beer and wine in the house, so that the magical spell of Alcohol is debunked.

I think of this along the lines of showing a child how to drive a car. I think pre-teen is way too young, but at some point in the teenage years, I plan on showing my young adult how to drive in a parking lot. Let them ask me the questions about it. But also show them technique and responsibility.

(I was given alcohol in church, and at the home before 21. I was also driving a lift truck working for my dad's machine shop while I was 11-16 or so. I did move the vans around on private property)

I agree that sex and booze is everywhere in the culture, and maintain that for the children viewers, let's keep the crap and innuendos off the air, especially when we know that in American culture, that famlies have parties and plan events around games like this. Had this been an episode of Law and Order, where the kids most likely aren't around, I would not have had a problem. Being a Parent …

Hello,

I could not "get" Run Lola Run. I understand the meaning of time, and the powerless feeling of trying to go back and change something to just encounter another struggle. Oh well.

Hands down, I think The Lord of The Rings is just superior with attention to detail, filming, sets, and the story explained. I really enjoyed that set of movies, and feel Peter Jackson & Co have set enormous standards.

I also enjoyed the Star Treks (although they have some flaws), and also Harry Potter.

I am really disappointed with Star Wars I and II in terms of the technological leaps Lucas makes. Why are the newer ships more sleek and modernized than the Original 3? I understand filming advances have been made, but why don't the Nubian vessals have buttons and switches, a la Millenium Falcon?

Enterprise did it correctly. No shields. Slow vessel. You feel you are going back into time stepping off Kirk's ship, and going into Archer's.

Worst disapointment? Matrix III.

Hello,

Welcome to Macintosh. :)

Inside your System --> Applications --> Utilities folder, you will find a program called Terminal. Drag that application to your toolbar to make the shortcut complete. In WindozeSpeak, this is Start --> Run --> CMD

Once inside your Terminal program, you will have a prompt that you can telnet places. Terminal is really an xterm session on the Darwin BSD subsystem.

I am not certain if telnetting to your server and typing in that command will open your webmail or not. It might be easier to use Safari or FireFox to open a session and get into webmail from there.

Hello,

RAM is the answer for you. But in laptops, you need to be careful, as you have limited amounts of slots inside... so if you are going to invest in RAM, make the conscious decision to get more than you need initially. I would recommend at least 512 MB, and if you are planning on hanging onto the laptop for a couple years yet, see if you can get into the 800's.

My laptop is a Powerbook G3 from 1999 (Lombardi), and I got it with 256, and took it to 384 when I upgraded to OS X. I would like to take it further, but am planning a hardware swap one of these days, and go after a new G4 / G5 laptop.

OS X @ 256 will work with one or two normal (Safari / Mail) applications open. If you are going to do Photoshop, Quark, or programming, then get yourself in the 512 - 1024 range.

Hello,

Agree on the NTFS stuff. You want to avoid writing to an NTFS disk outside of a Microsoft OS environment. There is just no way to apply the proper NTFS permissions unless you are running inside the environment that setup the bigger picture. How would your OS X, for example, know about Windoze Domain SID's?

If you need to write, consider setting up that NTFS partition on a Windoze computer, and share it over a network.

Hi,

Sometimes, Capperjack, they get so engrained into the registry that does so much damage that a repair is not possible. Or you might repair with a weakness. I have found in my career that when a machine is infected that badly that it is best to rebuild from scratch.

There are many ways to sink time into a compute repair. Sometimes it is more time-efficient to rebuild.

Hello,

The problem is that Windows 2000 local security policy is not letting you login. You need to have the proper username / password combination in order to proceed. Administrator account does not lockout with repeated mis-logins, so you can try to get the password correct over time, and get in there.

Windows passwords are always case-sensitive, meaning ThiS is different than this.

There are ways to get around the password problem; on an open forum, I will not get into those issues.

If your hard drive is FAT, you can re-boot into DOS, and read your data files off, and save them to another location, such as a network drive, or perhaps a USB device. If your drive is NTFS, you can download a NTFS reader utility that will allow you to copy files off the computer, and onto a floppy drive or perhaps a network device. Once your data files are safe, you can re-install Windows.

It is a safe bet that your computer warned you that the account was going to expire, and you needed to change your password. Do not ignore those warnings.

Hello,

In order to be legal, you need to have a valid serial number for licensing. Media (source install files) are not important... it is the license number that binds you to the agreement with Microsoft. Your people (clients) need to provide this information either with license numbers that they purchased, or by purchasing new media and licensing codes. If they do not like that, they can either call Microsoft and make their case, or start thinking about Linux.

It is not legal for you to install with your own personal codes. You could use your media, but you have to use the software licenses that they purchased.

kc0arf 68 Posting Virtuoso Team Colleague

Hello,

Not necessairly, but you should be alright.

You have to work with the rules of electricity here. Somewhere on your power supply, you should be able to see what the output power capabilities are... 12 V @ 5 amps, or 5 V @ 5 amps. Remember high school physics: Amps * Volts = Watts. Whatever rating your power supply is... that is the supply.

Add up your external devices... those are "draws". All hard drives. The mother board. USB devices.

Supply - Draws = spare.

If spare is a negative number, you are in trouble. If spare is within 10 percent or so of supply, I would say you are in trouble.

I would "guess" that if you have another free connector, that you could put something else in there. BUt if you want to do it right, then do the math.

Christian

kc0arf 68 Posting Virtuoso Team Colleague

Hello,

No. Good Luck finding an IDE cable with more than 3 connectors on it. Also, you only have selections for Master and Slave.

You can add a PCI / ISA card with an IDE interface on it to add two more ports. You can also add a SCSI card, and add more drives that way. Or find larger physical drives, and condense them.

Be careful adding so many devices though... your power supply might not like it. Yes, you can physically add more Y connectors to the power leads, but that costs amps, and you need to avoid an internal brown-out.

Hello,

This wasn't in the Apple Hardware forum, so took me a while to find it. The situation is not as dire as you think, and that Apple fella you talk to at the store should be shot for sending you away like that. I could see if you wanted him to add memory to a Mac Plus or something, but this is either SCSI or IDE, and anyone worth their salt in the profession would know the technologies, and how to wire it up.

If you have a digital camera handy, perhaps taking a picture of the motherboard and of the drive bays would be helpful / useful. We need both because if you have IDE and master/slave relationships, they need to be wired properly. I am also hoping that you do not have too many drives, as if you wire them wrong, you might need to re-install OS X. If it is OS 9 related, I think the system will find the boot partion. Not sure.

As for your son, how did he get into your project room? Did you leave the computer wide open, inviting a curious child? Not trying to lecture you here... but if this was an iMac, or anything with a tube, he could have fried himself. A little physical security needs some review over there.

Hello,

Some of us got DRAFTED into moderation. And I am glad that I was asked. And then promoted.

Moderation requires a blending of skills. You have to be dedicated to visit the forum on a regular basis, and handle both the skill questions, and the attitude / presence questions. You have to know when to shoot a dart, or fire photon torpedos. Sometimes, I find my greatest challenge here creating carefully-worded notice letters to members on what they are doing wrong, and offering corrective actions.

As for the Admin telling me what is happening -- I see the Community as a business. I prefer to be confronted directly if my conduct is in question, or needs adjustment. It is important that Admins and monitors keep the proper communications lines open... no surprises. They have to be honest with each other, and a moderator cannot be afraid to persue an admin who needs adjustment. It happens. Do not be afraid of losing someone who has a high post count... if s/he is disturbing the harmony of the site, loose the one than the many.

As a Super Moderator here, I work at keeping a positive mental attitude and offering hope to those who challenge the community here. No one is perfect, but we are all capable of working hard and behaving in the cyber sandbox.

Although I would argue that TCP/IP at 1200 buad is really slow, it does help in a city where there is a river between house and the "community shack", and we want to do something with the server...

You can get Fedora moving with a 500 MHz or so machine. RAM is important.
