Hello,

What version of OS X are youo working with? Are you working with strictly OS X software, or is there some classic in there too?

Typically you enable most fonts onto your system so that they are readily available at any time.

It is also a very bad idea to manipulate fonts while programs are open. Could cause problems doing that. Best close everything down first.

Hello,

You guys gotta remember that most people work with the windows insecurity model -- everyone is a local administrator. So NTFS permission changes would work for the un-informed. And no, a reflective share is not the answer to this one either.

If you wanted to be sneaky, you could put it on a partition that can be unmounted to the casual users.

And head the warning about Windows file encryption. It is not a toy. Do not treat it as such.

Also, locking a file out of Office might be one thing, but other pieces of software, such as a nibble editor, will walk right around that one.

iN this case, you might want to think about physical security. Don't let people on your box.

Now, you could put a modem onto the computer, and then have your computer on the outside "call into" your computer. BUt that is not very nice and easy. It would give you what you are looking for though.

Hello,

I am a Firefox and Safari user. For some reason, Firefox and Fox news do not get along too well on my Macintosh OS X platform. SO I safari the news page. No big deal to me on that one.

For entering bank numbers and that, you should be checking to see that you have an encrypted connection to the website... look for a little lock symbol on the lower right hand corner of your browser. If you are not "locked" you are transmitting in the clear anyways.

And to the folks asking if there is any sure-fire completely secure system.... there is... it is a formatted computer inside of a concrete bunker with no electrical cords, and a hard drive with a nail going through it. Less sarcastically, any system that is useful to people will ahve some risk. The goal is to limit that risk.

Hello,

I do not think that this is possible. In order to keep the Internet effective and fault-tolerant, devices on the internet look for the 'next router up'.

Your computer is configured for something called a Default Gateway. That device itself has a default gateway... all these gateways deal with traffic that is not on the devices particular subnet.

For example...

your box is 192.168.1.15, and you have a couple computers inside your house.... 1.20, 1.25, 1.30 Your box is told that the default gw is your interface to the outside world... such as the wireless router to the cable modem... and that box has 2 ip numbers... 192.168.1.1 and 69.21.21.21.

So, anything that your box does that doesn't access the 192.168 network gets sent to your default route 192.168.1.1 The IP protocol definition is now complete... if not local stuff, send it to the default gateway. Once onto the public internet, it looks for the domain that you are trying to reach, and finds the path.

Besides, how would your hardcoded program work if there was a configuration change? Not too well.

Hello,

Motorola sells software to program their two-way radios, such as what the police, fire, ambulance people use. When purchasing the software, you are entered into an agreement that you will not re-sell it, even if you sell off your radio investment.

I am also willing to bet that custom designed software that runs on industrial machinery also carry the same sort of license. Yes, it is restrictive, but then again, these are also highly specialized pieces that only a select group would work with.

To solve the WIndoze problem, install Linux. Even the Lawyers cannot argue with that one. I do not believe my Mac software has these types of things either.

Hello,

I am Episcopal, and a believer in Jesus Christ.

What I find interesting are people who claim not to be religious, and yet want to have Christmas off and Easter vacation.

I see different religions as different paths to God, such as Buddhist, Judism, and Arabic religions.

But religion can also be the "bond" of a cruel force. During the middle ages, Catholics were very meddling in society... what happened to Galieo for example, or the crusades, or the concept of indulgances. Leaders of the religion can turn the base into a collective weapon.

I am not sure that science can explain everything that happens, such as how personality develops inside people. I also think that certain scientific quests, such as cloning, will create great problems for our society. We do not have the wisdom as a society to control that power. Take a look at Jurassic Park if you need a very fundamental exam of that theory. OR look at the terminator movies... would you really like AI like that? How dare we think as humans that if a machine could define an enemy, that the AI machine would not seek to defend itself?

I do think it is important for a religion to be in a society. Not a state sponsored one, but a balance of duties and responsibility.

Christian

Hello,

I resemble some of those comments by DMR! Mac people have a religious obligation to the platform. When you have hardware blessed by the almight God of Fruit, there are expectations to adhear to....

Seriously though...

Great discussion involving partitions, drives, and operating systems. Good to see the flexibility of the OS be explored here.

I am a Linux fan... my personal choice is RedHat, although I am migrating to Fedora Core on most platforms as time allows. If you really get deep into Linux computing, you will find that you will compile and install a bunch of handy tools (sendmail, webserver, ftp server, tape backup crontabs, dictionaries, web based email, graphical software, the list goes on...) and it is not often the case of an easy installation of an upgrade disk!

One thing I would like to mention to the readers out there... don't play with partition toys such as Partition Magic. That software works the drive over, and it would be very easy to corrupt your disk so that it turns useless. Always backup. I personally never use the utility, as I prefer to setup disks and servers from scratch.

Enjoy,

Hi,

A better question might be to ask what is causing your problems that you need to repair the registry. If the box is working, you might want to leave it alone as-is.

Registry editing is not a smart thing to do unless you have documented instructions to achieve a particular goal.

If you REALLY NEED TO clean the registry because you are looking for something to do, please backup your data, and format your hard drive, and set it up from scratch. That always works.

It is possible to have two different file systems on the same physical hard drive -- any linux box with a swap partition has filesystem for the files, and another system for the swap data.

Or you can take a hard drive, and put a FAT32 partition on it, and an NTFS partition on it. They are two different file systems on the same physical drive.

You cannot put two file systems in the same partition however.

Hello,

I have been asked to create a webpage that features pagers for a pager company. The pagers are small icons, maybe 100 x 100 pixels or so.

What he wants me to do now is when the user runs the mouse over the graphic, he would like the graphic to enlarge, such as 200 x 200, similar to what OS X does when the user brings their mouse down to the toolbar, and the system enlarges the icon. He wants me to stick the phone number of the company inside the pager's output screen, and people to see it when the icon grows.

Hello,

My experience with Virtual PC is from the version 5 days, and using Windows 2000.

It was too slow to be functional for me on my 333 MHz PowerBook G3... but it did work.

Virtual PC sets up a virtual machine -- a computer inside your computer -- that runs the windows software ontop of the mac software. Your Windows materials will be all contained inside thaat one VM, and yes, it can be infected with a virus. Your Mac might be fine, but your Windows inside virtual PC can get infected. The windows viruses will not affect your Mac, but could affect the network because the viral code will execute inside the Windows area, and will hit the network.

Easiest is to get the Mac software. If it is not available for Mac, you might have some challenges. Let us know.

Hi,

I would not be the quickest to jump onto the Norton bandwagon.... I have seen cases where Norton fell apart in the Windoze world, and the antivirus just seems clunky on the Mac.

Also note that Virex, the last time I checked, was incompatable with my USB Palm device. I could not sync while Virex was up and running, because Virex would lock the file. I also found Virex support on OS X to be spotty at best.

Right now, I am not using anything on my Mac for anti-virus. I do not use Microsoft Office, so any office macro bugs heading my direction will not execute. I love OpenOffice. I am also behind a Linux-based firewall, so attacks via the network are thwarted there.

Hello,

I am using a program called RagTime. It is free for non-commercial use, and is Mac, Windoze, and OS 9 capable. You might want to search it out and see if it will do what you want it to.

RagTime does have some INTERNAL charting and graphing capabilities, along with simple spreadsheets. It reminds me of a ClarisWorks inside of Quark application.

One of the more frustrating conversions to Ragtime though is that it doesn't have the Quark and Indesign traditional "make a text box, make a graphics box" separation tool. The Ragtime way is to select the shape of the box, and when creating it, you determine if it is going to be a text box, or a placeholder for a picture. I need to remind myself of that now and then.

Hope that helps,

Hello,

Telnet operates on TCP / IP port 23, so you are going to need to manage that socket in your program. You might also want to search out RFC's on telnet programs to see what ports the negotiation occurs on.

As long as you are still doing your homework, it may also pay to determine what kind of terminal emulation you are going to support. ANSI? VT-102? VT-240? All of these terminal emulations will require study in the protocols... for examaple, VT-240 is Dec graphics mode, and that means colored lines.

You might also consider an SSH option with the software too.

WIth the amount of telnet programs out there, I am not going to ask why... but if you are going to take the time to write one, do your homework and get the scope of the design down at this stage.

Hi,

Windows 2000 Pro, and I believe XP Pro, have a utility on them called Windows Backup (WB) that does a decent job of working *once you get it setup properly*. WB in my tests will take your partition and system state, and place it on a network volume, or to another hard drive that wisely wouldn't be part of your backup.

For example, let's say I want to backup C: and D:, and I have a CD-ROM called E: and a fourth device called F: that is strictly for backups. I can tell WB to take the contents from C: and D: and dump them on F:

WB is talented enough to do Full backups, Incremental, Differential, Daily, and I think there is one other option. The backups can append, or make new files.

I do a full backup once a week, and a daily diff. The diffs overwrite each other. Then again, I keep my work on a server that is outside the scope of the WB.

You can also save the data to a tape, or I think a CD burner. Not sure on that one.

If you do go to a network, you will need network credentials to write to the network share. It will ask for credentials.

I also found out that if I wanted to backup a domain server using WB to a network share, the network share also had to be a part of the domain.

Hello,

I do not have an Apple Extreme card, but can give you some thoughts on it.

Wireless communications happen in the 2.4 GHz range, where a number of other devices transmit and receive, such as a cordless phone, and perhaps wireless remote controls like garage door openers, and maybe pet tracking devices.

A radio signal is an EMF (electro-magnentic field) transmission, so yes, having the magnets out of the way is a good idea. But there are other things to consider too, such as steel, large electric fields like a big electric space heater, thick walls, cement / brick walls, perhaps special flooring. Large monitors nearby can also raise the "noise floor" causing garbled communications. I know, for example, that my garage door opener interferes with one of my ham radio units.

You did not mention if you were in a home environment, or an office. Perhaps you are in a hospital in the X-RAY department with lots of lead in the walls.

Think of your wireless card like a walkie-talkie. You would like a clear-as-possible shot between your computer and the access point.

If you can give us the model number of the unit, we might be able to help you research externnal antenna options.

Some cameras, when plugged into the computer via a USB cable, or a Firewire one, will turn into little "hard drives", or more importantly, Volumes, on the Mac Desktop. You would then be able to click on them, go find your files, and drag them off of the camera onto your computer's hard drive just as if it was a floppy disk.

GTK -- Gnome Tool Kit

From their Website:

GTK+ is a multi-platform toolkit for creating graphical user interfaces. Offering a complete set of widgets, GTK+ is suitable for projects ranging from small one-off projects to complete application suites.
GTK+ is free software and part of the GNU Project. However, the licensing terms for GTK+, the GNU LGPL, allow it to be used by all developers, including those developing proprietary software, without any license fees or royalties.

GTK+ is based on three libraries developed by the GTK+ team:

  • GLib is the low-level core library that forms the basis of GTK+ and GNOME. It provides data structure handling for C, portability wrappers, and interfaces for such runtime functionality as an event loop, threads, dynamic loading, and an object system.
  • Pango is a library for layout and rendering of text, with an emphasis on internationalization. It forms the core of text and font handling for GTK+-2.0.
  • The ATK library provides a set of interfaces for accessibility. By supporting the ATK interfaces, an application or toolkit can be used with such tools as screen readers, magnifiers, and alternative input devices.

Function to add them up

Function to average them

Function to find smallest

Function to find largest

Function to list in reverse

Main program to manage the calling of the functions.

Now, you are going to need to fill in the functions with what needs to happen. How do you find the largest? How do you list them in reverse?

You are going to need to choose some storage data types... Perhaps an Array, perhaps a double-linked list. You are going to need some variables.

And it is your assignment, so please get some ideas on paper, and come back if you have some syntactical questions, such as the difference between an assignment, and an equal comparison.

Your keyboard is working in OS 9, but not in X. That is interesting. I think there were firmware updates to the G4, but do not remember to what models they applied to, and what they fixed. You might wish to search Apple's website for an article concerning that. Search on your specific G4 model.

It is also possible that OS X needs to know more about your Keyboard. Get into the System Preferences, and into the Keyboard control panel. See if you can specify a keyboard in there, and get it to work.

Hello,

I am not an avid Crashlog reader... those things are for programmers that have debuggers and tools to properly determine what happened.

But you mention that your Photoshop program works correctly when you login as a different user... so there has to be something wrong with your current profile.

Take a look at the Accounts control panel, and see if you have anything special/weird starting up that might conflict with Photoshop. I do not think that a re-install is necessaray. Also, run the disk utility, and check for permissions that might be out of whack.

Worst case, you may need to delete the account you are working with, and then re-create it. Be sure to save off your internet settings, and other profile specific information, such as emails and address books before doing the deletion. Also, do not copy all of the hidden/cryptic files back and forth; you might copy the corruption into the new account.

Also, Mac OS X is not Linux based... it is based on the BSD Unix, which has a similar "look and feel" as linux, but the filesystems are different, and the internal guts are different. IN terms of stability, I have seen equally excellent results with both.

The GUI (look and feel) of Mac OS X is special to the Macintosh. While the BSD underpinnings may be used elsewhere, the Aqua (look and feel) part of Mac OS X is what makes the Mac special.

Hello,

You might need to find your OS 9 disks, and get that system installed. What I did for my powerbook was installed OS 9 first, and then installed OS X on top of it. I did that so the computer would have all of the OS 9 materials figured out, so that my classic would work as best as it could.

To be honest, my laptop has 2 OS9 System folders, one on each partition. One of them is a fully-loaded ready to go OS 9 environment that I made above. The second one is trimmed-down for classic... classic has no use for a TCP/iP control panel, or a screen saver, or the Palm stuff, so I save on nsystem resources by trimming that out with the Extensions manager.

I think you are going to need to find the OS 9 disks you had, and install that OS onto your computer. OS 9 and OS X can exist on the same hard drive partition, and the Startup Disk control panel will manage which one works on Booting.

Hello Alex,

In MY book, too old would be the 7100 family and earlier, such as the Quadra (68040), and the Centris line, and the earlier Mac II's and so forth. Why? Because these units have some challenging part constraints:

* No IDE bus inside. Means if the hard drive dies, you need to find small SCSI-1 drives
* No built-in ethernet. Yes, you had the AAUI, but it was another piece of hardware.
* Generally limited to 800 x 600 or smaller resolution on screen. Yes could have "powerhouse" of a video card installed, but not always.
* Not VGA capable... so limited in monitor selection
* System software came mostly on floppy disk (System 7, System 6). Floppies are a problem.
* No CPU expansion options, except for some add-on cards such as the Daystar products.
* 72 pinn SIMMS, or even the 32 pin ones. Not as bad as chips... but do you have any around?

The oldest computers in our family still around are the PowerBook 5200's and the PowerMac 7100 that my cousin uses. We donanted away the Mac LC's that we started with, along with the IIe. I did keep an Apple IIc as it was small, worthy, and adorable. I turn it on once in a while.

Hello,

I remember a control panel that used to control the flashing of the keyboard lights. Ah, the fond memories of those days...

Resetting the PRAM should have cleared up any misgivings concerning the relationship between the computer and the monitor. You could try to boot into "safe mode" by holding down the SHIFT key while booting to see if there is a control panel out of whack.

It is possible though that the computer died.

More importantly though, why isn't your computer protected behind a UPS? Clean power is essential for electronics, and seeing that you still have a IIci in service after all these years, your computer has to be doing something special for you. You need to return the appreciation by cleaning up the electrical circuit for the computer. Especially in a hostile environment like you have there.
