Re: In XP, that depends on your configuration. In Vista and Windows, process start-order is randomised, so a moot question :)
Re: OK - you're asking a lot of "no details provided" questions, none of which make any sense without said details. For example:

Which particular Windows build (release and SKU - ie, Vista Home Premium)
Were you already noticing slow performance/boot?
Noticed background processes not recognised?
What are you actually … | |
Re:
Didn't you Google "opensource windows file explorer" and then try one/some of the offerings? And THEN let us have your recommendations.
It seems this guy would rather ask here and expect others to hunt for the answers themselves, rather than doing any work himself.
Re: Grow a pair and stop crying. We've all had (or even given) our share of flak, and not spent the next week sooking in the corner.
Re: Have been looking for some time for an alternative to Google's horror-show of a search engine, so maybe Bing will prove to be just that. Also a little disappointed at all the anti-MS rants, when Google has long been a privacy-wh@re and is showing to be the new tyrant on …
Have to ask. Why is one limited to a teeny 50x50 px image for a custom avatar, when those provided in-house are all 80x80? Seems a little unfair to limited simply due to wanting to express a little more of one's own personality. Can't all avatars have the 80x80 size …
Re: OK, take a deep breath and let's look at this. What we need first is some solid system specs (computer brand - HP perhaps?? - installed hardware - complete as possible - OS version - ie, Home Premium??). Have you installed ALL updates/service packs?? How much memory do you have?? …
Re:
You mention fowarding emails, i do use Windows mail for my gmail acount will that be affected?
Not unless either was specifically routed through said ulitity's service, which is unlikely. Re:
I am a lurker with lots of opinions and nerve to share them. :-)
So we've noticed :D | |
Re: First thing springs to mind is that your system became un-validated (ie, MS servers thinking was a pirated copy = no updates allowed). Since you've restored to factory settings, is a little impossible to diagnose if this was in fact the case.
Re:
Most BSOD are due to power defficiencies
Sorry, but what planet are you living on?? Most BSOD's are caused either by harware/driver malfunctions, or by core sys files being corrupted/removed (most commonly by malware, but also by poorly coded applications removing/tampering with core files). As the "Ntfs.sys" reference suggest …
Re: Can the newbies STOP assuming a virus the minute someone has an issue! Given that the OP has a cheap-ass system, which likely suffers from memory issues or even HW failures, stop imputing with obvious inexperience! @mushcroom - little we can do without info which has already been requested.
Re: Another bug I think. Before update was regularly getting email notification of posts to subscribed threads. Since update, nada. I kind of a pain when trying to assist someone and not getting the update sent as response is given.
Re: Agree with multiple AV's - get rid of that hunk-of-junk crapware AVG anyhow! Re: No need for the compressed air - putting vacuum to each of the vents should suffice. Could also be the hard-drive spinning up, esp if is only at start-up/wake-up times. If vacuuming doesn't stop the noise, would suggest either fan is on the way out or coming loose, or the …
Re: TrueCrypt can create a fully encrypted and PW secured volume, and can even go so far as creating a hidden volume within that NOONE can ever see. Access to either the main volume or the hidden volume within is determined by the PW entered on mounting - enter the PW …
Have you ever walked into a petshop and seen a "Cavadoodle", or a "Schneagle", or the regular old "Peke-A-Poo" (no I didn't make that one up!). So I thought, what other "designer breeds" can we come up with? Now this is by no means limited to dogs, or cats, or …
Re: To be honest (as most GUI customisation apps tend to either use more sys resources - such as Window Blinds - or compromise security by tampering with core sys files), would be better of either making the switch to x64 or upgrading you vid-card (an this is coming from a …
Re:
Josh Connerty, please read the site rules.
Given the useless blurbs regularly inserted willy-nilly, not really sure the site rules would be written for his comprehension level :-/

Re:
Can a 64-bit Operating System be installed on machine having a 32-bit processor??
No, Nein, Nie, Nada, Nyet! Re: Not natively supported in XP, but included in Vista and Win7 (EFS). Personally prefer TrueCrypt, which is universally OS compatible. BTW, this board is POSTING tips n' tricks, not requesting them

Re: Can concur with HelpingHands-IT... actually you can do this with ALL your personal folders. Best though to create a folder of same name in the other partition, as this makes the transfer process much easier. Defragging tho has long been proven to make little difference in modern systems. Re: There are several methods - all generally following the TweakUI's method of refreshing the icon cache. But in all honesty, EVERY alternate method is actually more time consuming that simply changing the icon through the Properties setting, so not really worth it.
Re: I'm asuming that is Ad-Aware not "adware", but anyhow lol. Am assuming given history here have checked Hosts file and run MBA-M/HJT?? NB: not being condescending, but jst want to make sure we're on the same page... btw, what OS and SKU (OS build) you running??
Re: Have to say am embarrassed I missed that one myself. Yes Nero 7 "claimed" to be fully Vista compatible.... which is true, if you don't consider Aero being switched off!! At least Adobe had the decency to be honest when Photoshop CS2 suffered the same issue.

Re: Had enough trouble getting LIDE50 to work (finally sorted using a work-around with LIDE70 drivers), so hate to imagine the issues getting LIDE20 to work. I do know the Vista drivers for LIDE50 didn't work properly on Win7. As a point, may be worth updating the scanner, even to a …

This question arose in another thread here, and don't wish to see that thread hijacked further, so moved here. Re: I guess the lesson to be learned from this is NEVER simply wipe-out the Default OS :)
Re: Are you using same drivers and XP build that came with system originally. Service Packs for XP did break a few drivers and apps along the way. Advice would be to update XP to latest SP and all updates, then look for latest drivers from component manufacturers.

Re: This is caused by not having Read and Write privileges, either on the specific file, or most likely to the networked directory. Re: Maybe am off track here, but driver in question appears to be a wireless LAN driver, not for the wireless adapter itself (the Intel official driver-package contains both).
