Anyone else find it weird we've seen articles like this, about once a year for the last 3 years. And each time, it never happens? I don't think Redhat would sell to Microsoft, they are doing good the way they are :)

His laptop is linux, so while the ping command will work the same, I would also making sure that you have valid Nameservers listed in your /etc/resolv.conf file. You can try to use: Nameserver 4.2.2.1 Nameserver 4.2.2.4 (These are Generic GTE Nameservers)

You may want to add these to your yum.conf: [fedora-stable-9] name=Fedora Project Stable RPMS for RHL 9 baseurl=http://download.fedora.us/fedora/redhat/9/i386/yum/stable/ gpgcheck=1 [fedora-updates-9] name=Fedora Project update RPMS for RHL 9 baseurl=http://download.fedora.us/fedora/redhat/9/i386/yum/updates/ Then you can install packages with 'yum install xxx' similar to up2date. ie. I'm on the computer about 14-16 hours on a normal work day, and on/off about 6-12 hours on a non-work day. Needless to say, the only reason my wife isn't very upset is because I got her to play on one too!

One thing you should check is that you are actually allowed to send mail via port 25 (SMTP) Outside of your ISP's mail servers. You can test this using telnet: telnet mail.domain.com 25 If you receive a response like this: 220 mail.domain.com ESMTP Then your connection is good, and it …

This could also be a DNS/WINS error, basically, are you able to access your computer via the WINS Name (mycpu) from the other computer via anything else? (like ping) you may want to add the entry into your hosts file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts).

I don't know if you read my blog, but I was basically installing mythtv for my PVR. One of the other alternatives if you arn't looking for complicated, would be the mythtv live CD distro: http://www.mysettopbox.tv/ There is actually a wiki to help with this as well: http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?id=KnoppmythWiki

As the previous technicians stated, there are many options. I would recommend trying FreeBSD (or the live CD equivilant Freesbie), or Solaris (intel version is now free iirc) if you are looking to have a 'UNIX' familiarity.

Linux can support any linux based program... so in a short answer: 'yes' it can support samba and NAT/DHCPd/etc. at the same time. Basically, all that is required is for the software to be installed, and configured, there should be no conflict between the application/services you mentioned above. The first thing that you would need to do is forward port 80 (on your router) to your computer. This can be done many different ways depending on what kind of router you are using, here is an example from netgears knowledgebase: http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/N101145.asp Basically, you would need to specify the …

If you are getting a connection timed out, that means that there is something blocking port 80 on your connection, this could be your ISP, most likely however it is a software firewall or some program on your local machine that can not access that port.
