And my drivers are all updated from windows update.

that good ,but my choice and the choice of many is not windows updates for drivers ,best to get them from the manufactures website

Thank you both for the very prompt reply, i just wanted to ask does it matter which BIOS version i have, i don't really want to take the risk in updating it to v5.0 incase i screw up.

Cheers...

my opinion ,and most[all] motherboard manufactures opinion ,you should not up date bios unless newer version will fix an issue you are having !

I gather having thirty or more open windows slows the computer; but the only way I know to deal with this is to close them one at a time by "backing out " the way I got in; sort of one at a time. There must be a better way, huh?

your dell should have a service tag on the case ,go to dell and type in the tag # and it will take you to correct drivers

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

The problem is with the fan not turning on. The laptop senses that the fan is not spinning and shuts off the laptop to prevent overheating. I had a similar problem with a dell inspiron 1525. The problem was fixed by replacing the motherboard. In your case the problem is either the fan or the motherboard. I would try to replace the fan and see if that fixes the problem. It also might be a motherboard problem. HOw long have u had the laptop?

hi, you are posting to a 1 yr old thread ,please check dated when helping posters ,thanks

hi every one.... i need the recovery cd's to reinstall the OS in my notebook, i try to restart on safe mode but I got a message saying that the OS is corrumpt :'( , so i contact HP-Compact and they don't fabricate those CD's anymore.... is there anyone that can help me to fix my oldie but goody computer.....:D Thank you in advance....

as long as you have the windows key any winxp cd[same version as yours of course ,home or pro ] will install on the laptop, you will just need to install drivers from HP for most devices

Thanks Caperjack

No can't get beyond Dell screen. I'll look for dust first.

we have 3 laptops and i have been working on computer for the past 10 yrs ,and have see this happen to laptops when the heatsinc and fan get dusty!may or may not be your problem but cheaper than taking it o computer repair shop to have it fixed ,
also ,if you can try a few easy trouble shooting things, like if it has 2 ram sticks ,remove one and try it ,if no difference replace and then remove the other .all you need is small screw drive to remove back cover to get at the ram

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

You need to install the correct driver for your sound card. You can download one from internet.

like in the link HP provided in previous post !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Try using system restore ...... set your computer to a time before this problem occured

not sure it did ,but most time this trojan will disable system restore ,

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

if you can enter setup with f2 ,and set defaults ,if nor you have to open laptop and remove bios battery ,but I like overheating over corrupt bios!

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

you don't say how old it is ,but dust build up in a laptop can cause it to do what yours is doing ,overheating ,and it doesn't take much dust ,a can of compressed air and clean the fan and heatsinc

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

ok never mind it can go through the start up screen, but it takes forever now and same with all the loading it takes 10min or so to just load something and this computer was faster then my xp what happen? all I did was just left it on till I got back from work.

maybe you picked up something and its running in the background ,get msconfig for win2000 in the link below , copy it o suggested folder and run ti from the run command in start and check what programs are running at start up and remove unnecessary ones

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

what is possible reason.....

bad ,fan .

and remedy..??

buy a new fan!

as for ram the 2 could be related ,fix fan first then try other ram

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

not sure what it can be but in device manager ,go to View ,select columns and check off peak memory usage ,this will show what they all maxed out at !might give some clue as to whats doing it .
also you could check event viewer for errors ,
type this into start/"run"
eventvwr.msc

Thus I am now maybe thinking that I need to connect both monitors directly into the docking station - thus connect one of them into the DVI port using a DVI cable ??

that sounds more likely to be the way to do it !
I have never seen it tried or done this my self ,have had duel on a regular 2 port video card ,but not a laptop ,if you only have 2 vga cables you can buy an adapter to got from vga to dvi!

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I have got an dual monitor issue that has stumped everyone I have tried asking about so grateful for any new advice!

When I try hooking up 2 monitors to my video card (ATI Mobility Radeon 7500), both monitors display the same content. Instead of being an extension, the second monitor just duplicates what's on the first screen.

I've tried to change the display in the Setting tabs on the Display options but to no avail. The dual monitor icons are displayed and it does let me click on the second monitor icon and allows me to do both of the following :

Right-click and select "attached" to activate it
Or check the "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor"

However, after then clicking "Apply", and allowing the machine to accept the settings, the computer appears to be accepting the settings - but then just reverts back to duplicating the info from the first screen onto the second monitor.

When I bring up the Settings again to check what's happened the second monitor is again not active anymore. Even when I move the two monitor icons around, and then it ask me that it will activate the second monitor for me, and I reply yes, the problem still does not go away - and the settings revert back again.

I think the issue is that the computer thinks that both monitors are the same as when I press the Identify button both monitors are identified as "1".

I'm sure …

i just got my computer. will not let me connect to wireless web. says http port 80, https port 443, and ftp port 21 is the problem. how do i correct these settings?

hi, please start you own thread and do not hijack other peoples threads !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

and just as a "by the way", can I strongly suggest that the use of the expression "in my opinion", can actually make a lot of sense.

Thanks again

lol

you never in any of you post mention hooking up other drives ,even when people suggested it was bad disk or drive ,Looking back through the post i think you had a bad harddrive ,in "my opinion"

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

hi, looks like you have nastie trojan ,unless you can remove hardrive and hook it to another computer to remove your important data ,and scan the drive to remove trojans ,i think its time to take to repair shop to get your important data.

when you do the alt+ctrl+dle does it open the task manager ,if can you go to file ,net task and type in explorer.exe

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, legacy capture video devices, media control devices and video codecs

that is all default stuff from winxp load ,you need to install the drivers for the device ,from a disk that came with the motherboard if you have onboard sound .or the sound device if its a pci device .

As for you hijackthis log i still haven,t looked at it really hard ,but for the most it looks a bit weird ,but normal to!
the wierd pard is this stuff running ,
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\RunOnce: [nlsf] cmd.exe /C move /Y "%SystemRoot%\System32\syssetub.dll" "%SystemRoot%\System32\syssetup.dll" (User 'NETWORK SERVICE')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [AVG7_Run] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgw.exe /RUNONCE (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [nlsf] cmd.exe /C move /Y "%SystemRoot%\System32\syssetub.dll" "%SystemRoot%\System32\syssetup.dll" (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [AVG7_Run] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgw.exe /RUNONCE (User 'Default user')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [nlsf] cmd.exe /C move /Y "%SystemRoot%\System32\syssetub.dll" "%SystemRoot%\System32\syssetup.dll" (User 'Default user')

all the 04's are programs that run at startup ,why do you have all these programs running ,only ones necessary are viruse program

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

if you open the case you will see that you could hook up a ide'sata fullsize cdrom drive ,most have ide /or sata connection motherboard with the case open ,at least i could with the older 240's

Thanks for your reply. Well at this point I'm really not sure, what i did was i downloaded all the drivers that were available for the make and model and for xp pro and just installed everything. Am pretty sure the driver was one of them as it said found network controller while i was installing and then asked me to install, which i tried to do and it straight away said driver not found. Have been able to get it online with ethernet cable and am currently trying to update the drivers that way, failing that am totally lost as to what to do next.

your just looking for conflicts ,installing all the wrong drivers !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

maybe you have a problem with the data transfer cable on the first drive ,

Hi there ,
Thanks for your reply. I tried to use Norton Ghost 14.0 but it takes ages...like my hard drive is 80GB in one partition...and it copies all of the size in network drive. And I cant make this in a DVD. So which ghost version do I need to use for that?

Thanks again and waiting for your reply.
Zulfiker.

don't know actually ,its been 5 yrs since i used ghost ,and only ever used it the once ,You have a 80 gig drive but its not full is it ,it only need to copy the OS and programs and any data on the drive,
i have a ghost image of win98 with programs on a cd,and winxp with lots of program on a dvd ,so it can be done !
in you cafe setting im sure there is not that much on the 80gig drive!
you need to make sure to clean the computer of any temp files and other crap on them before ghosting them , CCleaner is a good program for that !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

hi, thx for ur response. Just a quick question thou, do u mean a full install? I know i can do that with a disk, but i want to be able to save my data..or is it unrecoverable? Pls pls pls say its possible...!!?? thank u !

hi ,what you have a complicated problem and needs expert attention, like a good computer repair shop,or friend who really knows computers ,the hard drive can be removed and placed into another computer to retrieve the data ,but yes a full reinstall would be easiest and better !in my opinion
