you can do a repair install it will sometimes work .I just done it yesterday ,changed motherboard .and it worked all data still in tact .
but you have to have retail xp as recovery cd's don't give the second R for repair .

yeah its because there was a password on the old drive when it was the main drive .try this might work .I had this problem with customers hdd and only was i got the folder open was to boot it back up in old computer and remove password .i was lucky there motherboard was still working ,just being upgraded .

Why it does work when I fully restart computer and doesn't when I hibernate->unhibernate?
Is there any reason for such behavior or is it just a mistake?

Not sure I don't use hibernate,all i know is the only time it works for me is before either user logs in !~ and even then it will not open the admin acct because or restrictions of some sort .

I also tried this, but I don't want to have to login and logout to another user's account only to be able to login to mine. :). Any other ideas?

Sorry ,I guess you'll have to call Bill Gates and get him to program that option into winxp .,I have xp Pro and xp Home here and neither one does what you are trying to do

Possible Solution...... go to Start /run/ type in ,regedit.and do the following

There are 2 reg keys that can screw the device......remove them both and reboot......

The keys are:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters".

most likely cause is its been removed by a virus/spyware scan you did ,and a malware program that is set to run at startup is looking for it ,first place to look for startup program is in START/all programs /check in the startup folder deleted any programs there that you don't want to run at startup .if nothing there go to START/Run and type in ,msconfig, and go to startup ,check for suspicious looking program .

Of course... the fact that I continued running the machine even after it first started doing the whole shut-down thing almost a year ago is another issue...

it sure is ,if it been that long then maybe its a software issue ,have you tried doing a chkdsk repair .right click on the harddrive icon in mycomputer and go to tools and do it from there check of to fix errors

not necessarily,you may just need to do a repair of windows ,and you will need to do this with the windows cd,in the cdrom drive and boot computer to the disk and do a repair ,at the prompt you type in , "chkdsk /r" with out the quotes" .

Over the past few months, sometimes my PC will not switch on at all and it is completely dead.

over the past few months ,the power supply [myabe ] has been getting bad or has always had a problem ,now a power supply that has issues could after months of using damage your motherboard ,so hoping it hasn't, get a new PSU or have that one tested soon

on that black screen you could try, last know good configuration . some time this works but the problem is usually a harddrive or device driver problem and will require the windows cd to run repair .

hello ,doing a search on you model number turns up nothing ,how old is the laptop and are you sure that the model number you posted is correct .
also you need to go to manufacturers web site for drivers for motherboard and sound and video ,as most are not in the windows install.

Re-reading post #20 again i have to repaid what i said in one of my earlier post , that the hdd is dead ,no longer functioning,needs to be removed and replaced .You can play with all the 3rd party software you want .!!!! Actually I have and use Knoppix live cd that i would now use to check the for your hdd ,if knoppix doesn't see the drive then its dead or disconnected.

you trouble shot and found your problem and you are risking ruining your computer to find out more info on the net .Get that PSU out now before its to late .

Open the tower cover and remove any addin PCI cards like sound card and modem or network card .see what happens ,if you have more than one stick of ram remove all but one .

I have tried both already.Resolution as well as colour quality are at their highest level.No probs with video driver.then even i have reinstalled video driver & now i have even formated my windows drive & reinstalled OS but no benefit.

Like i said in my first post ,this is weird problem .and now it get weirder ,after a format it should not be a problem, maybe you could use print screen option key to copy a screen capture of the browser when all looks weird and attach it to you next post ,for a look !

Nope ,sorry ,if you followed all the suggested fixes so fan and its still not working then maybe its time to pick another antivirus program ,Norton isn't the most recommended one anyway .
You could try a system file checker to check for corrupt or missing windows files .with the winxp cd in the drive go to Start /run/ type this in with out the quotes "sfc /scannow " note there is space between / and s ,if no difference i suggest the following

you will need to contact microsoft to buy a valid key to make it genuine

and about the screen resolution that i have right now... before i reformatted my comp, the screen resolution was normal (probably like everyone elses which is not too big, and not too small). oh.. and i have no vid card?.. but lemme check again, i might have checked for the wrong slot.

sounds like your video drivers need installing ,and the video card/controller is where the monitor pluggs in on the tower ,monitor wont display with out one .

it could possible be video driver problem .right click on your desktop go properties /settings and check the color quality make sure its set to high 32 bit . or
right click on mycomputer ,go to properties /hardware/device manager and check for red or yellow ! on the video display

WoW all the 04's do you actually get to use the computer after you turn it on .lol.

i think if you have burner and Nero you could create bootable disk using the file on the 6 floppys ,but i could be wrong ,maybe something for me to try today and see .

hello,i guess no ones has posted because its such a weird problem as the images work ok on the drive but not the internet ,i have no solution ,just wanted to say hell and welcome to Daniweb .
is it with all internet images or just some web sites giving you the problem ,

when adding a new mommyboard you will need to reinstall windows and all you hardware drivers ,the old winxp install doesn't recognize the new mommyboard because its loaded with the drivers from the old board and looking to boot to it ! so you should remove hdd and copy off all your important data and then format and reload windows xp fresh ,please note ,that you will also loose all software you used and need to reinstall it .

oh and the problem with the display is you don't have correct drivers installed for you video device.as for the floppy whats on it ,is it a winxp boot floppy ,and what are you going to boot to it for if you are not going to do a repair ! what are you booting to it for ! please explain youself.

Having said that I never reinstall with the oem disk always use a full version disk i have and just use the key form the oem sticker .

you don't have many choices ,main one would be to not have the dvd on the same cable as the hardrive that you rip dvd to for copying if you do copy dvd's .

no ,i have oem and have changed the cpu ,video ,ram and hdd ,a few time for cpu and hdd,have had to re-register a few time now ,las time because i was testing 2 x1 gig sticks of ram and it made me register winxp home oem, im always swapping the ram chips for ones i buy and sell ,to test them before i sell them .

yes it does sound like a bad ram slot ,try cleaning the slot of dust using compressed air .might be dirty from non use.you board will max out at 2 gig so if the slot is bad you max becomes 1gig .

I operate Windows XP Home Edition.
My Recyle Bin Icon is on the desktop and the folder is in My Computer. But I cannot access it.
Whenever I try to send a file to the Bin I get this message. "Cannot delete ---. The dir or file cannot be created."
This started a few days ago and I have tried various actions in "Safe Mode", several different virus scan programs. No luck.
Oh, yes. When I click on the Icon, the Bin opens but is empty. But when I go to System/Disk Cleanup, it says there is 1,953,722 Kb in the Bin but doesn't empty it!
Anybody have ideas?
