yes they are equal ,and once you delete the old one you can change the name of the new one to the same name as the old one .i think with out any problems ,been a while since i had to do this myself

with the winxp cd in the drive and the drive set to first boot [in the bios] go to the recovery console and hit R for repair ,and at the prompt run "chkdsk /r " with out the quotes ,and there is a space between , /and R .
mostlikely cause is a driver conflict .could also be a ram problem

transfer what the settings .? I wouldn't know what they were !
If it were mine i would just copy the desktop icons,and my documents folder to the new acct .
go to mycomputer/C:\ drive /documents and settings ,go into the old user desktop folder and copy all and then go to the new user and paste it all into the desktop folder ,same with the my documents folder and anything else you want copied besides apps.then deleted the old user .not thats only if it were mine ,being windows anything can happen !!!

I just did and it works perfectly. Any ideas why?

I checked the settings and they were almost identical except for the background color, which I try changing on the main user account but it just changes the black behind the icon and text to whatever color background I change it to.

all i can say is some spyware/trojans has registry settings for that user corrupt ,and the new user creates its own new registry settings for stuff like the desktop .

contact gateway again and ask them ,i do believe the error code in the message will tell them more as to whats wrong with the drive ,and will most likely tell you to send it back for replacement .

have you tried creating a new user acct. and see how its desktop works out

because its shutting down when you try to reload im thinking heat problem first ,then maybe a CPU problem .get a can of compressed air and blow out the heat sinc and fans .

I tried to fix a computer for 3 days with this problem ,i had to format and reload winxp .
i even deleted and disabled onboard sound and installed a pci sound card with the same results .remove recent installed program install by owner ,nothing tried all suggestions in this thread and other on this form like it nothing worked but a clean reinstall of windows for me .

First let me say you must have one of the good EMachine if you haven't had to format it in 3 yrs .
have you tried changing the setting for it in control panel/system/advanced /performance /settings and do a for best performance setup,check off the 5-6-7 ones from the top and the bottom 3 in the list

did your friend go into the BIOS to make sure that the cdrom was set as first boot device .

I suggest you use the winxp cd and go into the repair conslo and run "chkdsk /r" with out the quotes .

yeah the ram i was looking at ran at both speeds so as long as it wont affect performance then i will take the cheaper option and go for the 266/333 ram many thanks mate

nope no affect ,if you use 333 and a stick of 266 in same computer ,the 333 just runs at 266 the lowest speed the computer is compatible with ..good luck

These are some of the things I do every day is to clean out unused and cookies and build up from surfing etc and i did a defrag even tho my pc analized defrag to see if it was needed and it said it wasnt needed. I seems like it is my isp not the pc itself. Because when I do speed tests it seems my download and upload speeds are slower then they should be. Is there something I can do to speed this up or do I have to call them to have them check this? What happens is when I am surfing it takes much longer then it should to change web sites and this has been worse lately then in the past.

problems with 8 year old laptops and todays internet is all the software that the internet pages use to play music stream video and so on .if you really want to use the lapt top to surf at higher speen then you will need the added ram to do so! i have 2 old laptops and surf fairly well ,but reall don't use them much and when i do its just to read news papers .

if the laptop is only rated for 266 then there is no advantage to buying the 333 as the laptop will only run at 266.that said if the ram is rated 333/266 ,then it will run at either speed .so it won't hut to buy 333/266 if the price is the same as the 266 ram l .

Thank you for your input but I think I should use my warranty before it expires in August. If I do as you suggest and make things worse (if that's possible) then my warranty will be null and void. Thanks again for making the time to share your advice.

Good plan ,sound to me like the harddrive has failed ,as for has my computer crashed ,well yes sort of ! as for slow process bard [on dialup ] dialup has nothing to do with how fast you computer dos thing just how fas you internet connection works ! .anyway that said ,Send it back Now !!

now my answer you question as best i can ,It worked when moved because it could now find the .DLL it was looking for because its in the folder we moved it to.as for why it didn't work in the folder by itself poorly written program i guess ,it is only a BETA version .

you see you problem is not the same as the problem in the post you tagged ,so really you should have started a new thread of your own exxplaining you problem ,and yes it may well be a keyboard problem ,is the kb ps/2 or usb pluggin

You've gotten all the advice you need.
This HD is not going to boot, nor will it be found by any diagnostic program.
You may get lucky if you remove it and connect it via USB, but that's doubtful.
Take it to a pro, or just forget it and move on.

yeah the thread is old but the last poster is new.Iam tired of telling people to start there own thread ,that administrators job.so i just ask a ?

its a default setup when windows is installed !

Go to safe mode and go into the admin account and go to users in control panel and create a new user ,reboot computer and go to new user ,it may be that the one you are using now is corrupt

cannot get into safe mode in xp,ive tried key f8 on booting but get no result only the normal windows start up

so did you also just install sp2,you say just the normal windows startup ,does that mean that you can boot into winxp and everything works ok.
could be a keyboard problem ,are you tapping the f8 key over and over as soon as the computer starts booting /

Ok, I found a download of the threadmentor ,and it consist of 5 folders ,in the BIN folder is a visual.exe file copy it to the LIB folder and click on it there and it will run ,good luck .

Thats good ,what was it that you did that worked great ,as there are a few suggestion in this thread ,I tried for 2 days ,and finally gave up and reinstalled winxp to fix the problem.

no sorry ,that DLL file is not found in any web search i do ,and I have never heard of ThreadMentor software. what is it for ,! one would have to assume that its spacific to tredmentor .maybe you should try downloading the program again and reinstalling ,Is it down loadable to the general public,if so do you have a link to the download

i installed the ThreadMentor software from cs.mtu.edu website, but i could run it . It says, "This application has failed to start because "gtk-1.3.dll" was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem".

i re-installed it twice and im still getting the same message. what can i do to fix the problem? what tis "gtk-1.3.dll" in the first place? where can i get it from ? PLEASE HELP

Hello ,wouldn't it be better to ask you question at www.cs.mtu.edu seeing that its where you got the program .

chkdsk /r from the windows recovery console usually fixes device conflicts for me,you will need the winxp cd tp do this .
how to use the recovery with the Windows CD-ROM in the cd-drive start your computer. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press 'R" to repair. athe promt usually you need to type in 1 then enter if asked for password just hit enter .at the prompt ,type in with out the quotes ., "chkdsk /r " note there is a space between / and R ,it may take awhile to run ,don't interrupt the chkdsk leave it run for as long as it takes . .

I haven't spent a lot of time in front of a LCD, but i think what you see is normal and nothing gona fix it for you .you might check the system properties ,right click on mycomputer/properties /advanced /performance settings and make sure that smooth edges of screen fonts is check off

check inside the case for dust buildup on fans ,could be heat issue

Don't worray about the bsod the format should have taken care of it unless its ram related .

no special software needed just you winxp cd ,if you ever get the BSODagain you can use this info ,check microsoft site ,the command you need to run is the "chkdsk /r"
