I have been able to fix it most of the time by moving the Nic card around to a different PCI slot, otherwise I just put in a 192.168.....xxx...xxx address.

I always suggest that you register your domain separate from your webhost. If you ever have a problem, or they have a problem, it is a lot faster and easier to switch your DNS entry at GoDaddy or whereever you use and move on. It is more of a hassle …

I have run the conversion a bunch of times without a problem, I still do not know why you need NTFS for to run games. Other than that it is a good idea to have NTFS over FAT.

Most likely there is already an administrator account? If for some reason not, go to control panel, user accounts click on your account and change account type to administrator.

Most of the time for a Hal.dll issue I run a chkdsk /R, if that does not work, I test out the drive and a great deal of the time I have a bad drive, after that I will run the repair install.
http://www.ntfs.com/boot-disk.htm has a free-download floppy disk image that, when expanded to a floppy, creates a bootable disk that will allow you to copy files from an NTFS partition to a FAT32 partition (or another hard drive) or a network. The Knoppix CD will allow you to do the same thing, …

I like to use usb to IDE connectors to do that myself, those drives are fat16 or could be fat32. XP should pick them up so you can move the data over.

I would just run a system state backup and then backup folders you want backed up. I normally try to store a ghost image also which helps if I need to do a full restore.

are there group policies on the PC, or can you log in as admin and make the change. I do not believe there are any local policies that cover the firewall, but it could not hurt to check them out.

you will need to purchase a new motherboard and cpu. You can checkout TigerDirect, NewEgg, and Fry's Electronics/Outpost. Now depending how old your system is it just might be better to work on a new build, with a P4 system.

I would disable giant spyware app and see if it still crashes. If it does, I would run a chkdsk on the disk, test out your memory, run some programs like adaware, and antivirus scan to see if they pickup anything, and run hijackthis also.
