It's kind of like this... Once you get in there, what are you going to do? I had a freeshell account, but I let it lapse. I mean, I've got all of the Unix boxen I ever need, and I've got them set up for remote access. I've got NetBSD, …

Like Mastadex asked, did you recently change your fonts/appearance in your desktop settings? This happened to my wife's system once when she was tweaking her settings. Certain font sets don't have apostrophes ('), so instead of displaying an apostrophe, you'd come up with a .

Try sticking in your Windows installation disc and then type sfc /scannow It might be able to get systray back for you.

Nope, it will just ask you to re-register. I've done it before. But, back to the question that dlh6213 asked: Is this a secondary hard drive (ie, one just to keep stuff on), or are you making it the system drive? If it's just secondary, there's no need to reinstall …

Yeah, you should be able to-- just be sure to set the jumpers correctly. The motherboard should recognize it. Also, if you're talking about being able to boot Windows or whatever OS, you might even be able to do that, if the system can detect changes in the hardware.

Also, if you're browsing through our Security forum, some HJT logs are detected as containing malicious scripts sometimes, as the text will have URLs embedded in them. If McAfee will allow you to proceed, then it's cool, and the messages can be disregarded if you've performed Catweazle's suggestions.

Is this a homework question? Have you tried to even get started on this? Why not post some code that you've written, and then others here will help. I'm not that much of a programmer, but this doesn't look too difficult. We're not here to do things for you; we're …

If NT AUTHORITY is shutting your system down, you can use the Stinger tool: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger What is the exact error message you're getting, by the way?
If reinstalling does not work, try to play the wav file with Windows Media Player. Just to see if your file even works.
Good suggestion, or even more basic, you can open it with Windows Sound Recorder. It uses WAV as its default filetype.

What type of motherboard do you have? Will your board even support PC3500? For most people, I'd only recommend running PC3500 if you're doing over clocking, or if you're running a newer P4 or something similar. Your sound issue might be memory-related , but I'd look for driver updates for …

You should be in good shape, power-wise. I'm running 6 hard drives on an old P100 box with a 250w Power supply, and it keeps on chugging. But, if your motherboard does not support more than 130GB, that might be an issue. I'd check for a BIOS flash or something, …

What's the exact DNS error message you're getting? A lot of times, DNS errors just happen because you cannot contact a DNS server, while it may be related to spyware, it's often not. Are you having any other issues?

Linux/BSD running sendmail or postfix work great. If the box isn't going to see much action, you could install that on a very low-end box, and be in pretty good shape.

Try doing a search for "reformat" in the forum here. I recall having posted instructions several times in the past couple of weeks on how to do this. Additional suggestons for searching would be "erase" or "reinstall"

If you installed the program in 98, it's going to be tough to have it run in XP. Reason being, you have to install certain files into XP's registry in order for things to work right. More than likely, that's what's going on here. What error are you getting?

hrm... is this laptop drive removable? I'd try reseating it. If reseating it doesn't help, your drive is most likely bad. Can you boot a DOS disk with it?
