Open a command prompt and type cls.

The "roundplug" is a PS2 connector.
There are PS2/USB adapters that might help, and a tinkerer might be able to fix the connector, but it's just not worth the effort, or the money if you have to pay for it.
Keyboards are cheap and come in a zillion different models. Find a USB keyboard you like and buy it.
Have a stern talk with your kitty.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

How could a keyboard "feel weird"?
In any case, I think it's the only solution as you've damaged the PS2 connector. You probably shouldn't use it at all.
Post a pic of the kitten.

What do you get if you enter cmd in a run box?

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

That sounds like a serious hardware problem.
Try booting to a CD/DVD.
I suspect you need to take it to a shop.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

The kind of problem you're describing sounds like some kind of restrictions set in the router configuration

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

VNC will do it:
http://www.realvnc.com/
It's quite an education to set it up, but it's used by a lot of people.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Will it play CDs?
These drives sometimes need to be connected more tightly. I'd take it back and have them reinstall it.

1394 is Firewire, and that's OK.
All the other info sounds good. so this might be a firewall issue. If it's McCaffee, just uninstall it. Any firewall that blocks you without telling you is a piece of crap.

You may be able to get some help from Dell by emailing that code to them.
You could also remove the CMOS battery, or look here:
http://www.rockbox.org/lock.html

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Do the other computers show a similar pattern for the IP address (i.e. 192.168.1.???). Is the gateway the same?
In Control Panel/Internet options, what is shown under connections?
Can you ping any web sites?
Try ping www.yahoo.com from a command prompt.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Dell makes excellent hardware, and their support is usually pretty good. You may need to be more patient.
What is the exact error message you get when this "password" request shows up?
Have you checked the boot order?
Does the HD show in the BIOS?
Have you isolated the noise?

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Sorry, I was a bit off line myself and can only read here now.
I asked the client to get their windows xp cd, (they still searching for it, he he....) as it seems that there is a conflict in device manager with an unknown device. As soon as they can produce their cd, I will do a repair install and see what happens, and post back here. The thing is, as there is no network connection icon to fine tune, I cannot connect their pc to the internet to try to update the "unknown device driver"

Wow. It's too bad they don't make a device that allows you to transfer files from one (Connected) computer to one that's not. If they did, you could download the needed driver to this device, then transfer it to the unconnected computer.:)

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

You've left out everything we need to know.
What OS(s)? What hardware?
Post ipconfig.
Router? ISP?
Run a spyware scan.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

The new HD is not being found. Double check your installation.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

What is the exact message?

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Was there any physical event preceding this? A power outage, lightning strike or maybe an honest politician discovered?
This seems like a motherboard problem. Try removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes, then reboooting.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Is this a modem or a router?
Has the internet ever worked on this laptop before?
See here:

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

It's probably not the HD. Have you tried Safe Mode?
If Safe Mode works, try System Restore.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Connect your laptop to the router and run ipconfig/all.
Post the result.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Which one are you connected to?

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

I wouldn't say it's "better", but it does seem to be very stable and driver/program support is excellent.
That said, I expect dual-booting is the way to go, as it will expire next year.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

"That error" doesn't help much.
Be specific.
Remove the cover of your PC and check that all cards, including the memory are seated properly, clean out the dust bunnies and check for any loose connections.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

I switch my player between Ubuntu and XP, which is what led to the confusion. This causes problems in XP, so you can look at it anyway you want. I see it as an interesting lesson.

"Hey you, sheep ahead! What the heck did you eat this morning? Oh never mind, I can smell it now. Flock, can we just shift it around a little bit? I would like to try following someone else for awhile."

I've gotten into trouble more than once for going my own way, and I've been wrong sometimes, but it's the best way for me. That doesn't mean others are wrong, however, or even sheep.
Waving from the mountaintop is good, but waving from in amongst the flock and converting them is good also.
I think I detect a lack of rebels in high places these days, but rebels and free thinkers seem to be deselected by the process. Look at the congress and the generals who gave us Iraq and Vietnam. Check out the latest financial meltdown, which just one dedicated professional could have averted.
Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me Americans are more interested in their own survival than sacrificing for the group or standing on principle than in the past.

'Twas ever thus.
Your philosophy goes way beyond computers (I just turned 65, so I'm just a kid in this discussion).

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Velly interesting.
Check your network connection to see if TCP/IP is installed. Look for the adapter in Device manager.
Run a virus scan.

I sort PC problems for a living. I have never ever seen the recycle bin on an MP3 player ever.

I am not the one who is wrong.

This only happens in Ubuntu, so I'll give you a half credit.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

The information in the recycle bin is stored on the hard drive in the pc, not on the MP3 player.

Thank you for telling me how my MP3 player works.
I'd appreciate the info if you weren't wrong.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Change you computer memory and then try it will work

While that's not impossible, there's absolutely no reason to make such a suggestion just yet.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

What OS?
Open your wireless configuration software and select another wireless connection.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

That would seem to leave the NIC as the culprit.
Post Ipconfig from this machine.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

How did you format?
Can you see any info on the BSOD?

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Does it have a recycle bin(Mine does)?
Empty it if so.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

It's looking for the jar file that installs the chrome theme (I think).
Reinstall this theme, or another and see if that helps.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Take everything out and start over, installing all the parts carefully in accordance with the instructions, especially the memory.
Be sure you haven't disturbed any adjacent connections.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Does this adapter have its own wireless management software? Look in Programs to see if anything is listed.
Try enabling the Wireless Zero service if it's not started.
Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services.
Any lights on the adapter?

"If it is that easy, why isn't everybody doing it? I didn't say it was easy, I just said it was cheap. The cost is in the fact that you have to learn what to do and how, and then get it done."
There's your reason.
Speaking of home PC users, most don't have the time or interest to install and learn Linux. I have Ubuntu on my netbook and an older desktop, and have recommended it to several people, but no takers. Windows PCs are cheap enough that free has trouble competing,

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

I would guess you're misinterpreting something you're reading in Norton, which is junk anyway. I'd free upsome space by deleting it first.
You obviously haven't deleted as much stuff as you thought.
You really need a large hard drive for Audio-video work, and you're just putting off the inevitable. If the budget allows, just get another derive.

I'm not at all sure where to put this question.
It's been a long tine since I messed with basic, and I'm not a programmer of any kind.
I got interested in a method for calculating the Golden mean, and I'm hoping some kind soul will point me in the right direction.
I'd like to write a Qbasic program(I don't have any other languages available anyway) that:
Inputs two numbers (This I can handle)
Adds them together(Check)
Adds that sum to the previous number (No problem)
(if the two numbers are 5 and two, the third is 7 (5 + 2)+5 =12)
I want to continue in that fashion until I have twenty numbers, then divide the 20th by the nineteenth.
I haven't figured out how to handle the "previous number", and any hints will be appreciated.
TIA.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Empty the recycle bin.
Ccleaner is an excellent utility to help in this process:

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Get a router. Problem solved.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

It depends on where the file is. Is it an external Style sheet?
If so, you'll need to include the path to the file and or folder.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

yes you can..just buy a PCI ETHERNET CARD AND INSTALL IN YOUR MACHINE...AND ALSO INSTALL ITS DRIVER TOOO...YOU CAN USE IT FOR CONNECTING TO TWO DIFFERENT WORKGROUP...

Look it up dude-there are no pci ports, so it can't be done.
A little research goes a long way.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

I don't think so. Why would you want to?

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Is there anything at all in Event viewer? Your hardware may not report thermal events.
It won't do any harm to open it up and clean it out, as heat is the most common cause of this kind of behavior. It wouldn't hurt to check the power supply either.
