Thats normal. BCD (The windows 7 bootloader) is installed on the MBR. When you choose Older System, it chainloads NTLDR for booting XP. I had the same thing to get Vista, XP and NT4 to work together (with them all chaining off eachother).

Yep. Bubble sort is probably easiest (not the most complex, nor the most efficient though). Just remember that you cant just use == to compare strings in C. I know in C++ the STL has a function for comparing strings, dont know about C.

yeah. Acers come with a large partition, It contains system restore functionality and is for use with thier bundled backup software too. if you have a "real" windows DVD for that laptop, its *probably* safe to get rid of the partition, otherwise definately not.
