I am having a very similar problem. I am trying to install windows xp with service pack 2 on a 200GB hard drive. It installs correctly (or at least claims it does) and then goes to reboot. It reboots and I take out my cd. It gets to the DOS boot part but just reboots and will do that for hours. The drive had Debian Linux installed on there before. Is there a problem with the boot sector of the hard drive or what?
Thanx
-XxRavingTeenxX

if you did a full format and new bootsector should have been written .
go to the hdd makers website and get there utility for setting up your hard drive for an operating system ,they a ll have one .and use it to ready the drive for windows .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Yes, i can burn pictures, music, and ISO images to a CD-R disk.

ok,that leads me to think its not a dvd burner ,a search of the make you have listed in a earlier post says its a Aopen,52x cd-r ,16x dvd combo ,and that means its a cd burner and a dvd player ,not a dvd burner .that why its not working !
check it out .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

yeah, norton ghost ,you make image of the drive with windows on it,using the ghost program you make the image onto the other hard drive , and just install that the next time windows screws up,

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

more to it than that if it would ever work ,the registry is one thing ,there is the system/system32,and folder and all the different shared dll files programs use when installing and all the other crap that would happen ,i don't think it can be done myself .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

it is safe to delete all files in the prefetch folder ,might get rid of the error .
make sure you set the eide to master ,and set boot order in the bios ,making the sata bottable before the ide drive .
i postting a old thread here might have some infoe of interest in it .i have never done what you are trying to do so have no on hands experience with it .

a computer has memory module called RAM,consisting of many little chips on a long board,, ,one or more usually ,and the get bad ,whereas they work but can cause errors when a program try using the bad part of the ram, RAM= random access memory

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

re-read my other post ,i told you to restart the computer when you set it to run the chkdsk.
the error message means windows is running on the volum

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

so run the chkdsk and get it over with ,right click on the harddrive icon in mycomputer and go to properties/ tools and check to do a chkdsk and fix errors ,reboot computer ,don't hit a key let it run run the check disk

2 MONTHS ,long time in the life of a computer ,did you at least open the case to see if all the fans were full of dust ,and if so clean them out ,heat can cause freezing and reboots .
also driver conflicts and or bad ram .
If you have a winxp cd ,boot to it and do a repair ,go to the recovery consul hit R for repair and at the prompt type in CHKDSK /f

IsoBuster didn't work. It just said "No media present". I updated my IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller: SiS 5513 IDE UDMA Controller. That didn't work. My AOPEN COM5232/AAH PRO firmware is up to date (R.1.08). I have no idea what to do.........

have you tried to burn other stuff non ISO file , like music or pictures to a regular cd-r disk and not a dvd disk , to see if the burner actually works

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I have tried to do it on 2 other computers. It still won't work, so I don't think it's the burner.

as i said before i do believe its not a dvd burning program .or it doesn't like our brand of dvd disks we are using ,
you could try isbuster software .

firewall isn't blocking it as i can see.. and it still won't open :(

ok,when you surf around the net you are able to get to all sites you try and go to except this one ,correct .is is possible you pissed them off some how and they are blocking you ip address from accessing them ..not like from the looks of the site thought .just a thought !!!
So in IE go to tools and internet option and security and make sure you don't have them blocked in the restricted sites section, also while in internet option empty the temp internet files and cookies and history section .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

ok,you saved the stuff ,why not just formatt and reload windows now, instead of trying to fix it .

Don't laugh -- I did that once. I got to angry that I tossed the computer, monitor and all books out the back door and smashed it all on the concrete patio! I felt great after doing that :)

some day, I will do the same ,and the cat will be on top of the heap!!lol

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

It makes no sense that it worked before and now doesn't ,
go to start/ control panel and .click on the windows firewall icon, see if its activated and maybe its blocking it .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

yes, it's the only website i am having problem..

thats weird ,maybe you used a firewall and have it blocking this site

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

don't get mad, get even ,throw out the computer !

I connect with no problem, is it the only site you cant get to.

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

WOW ,never heard that one before ,what happens if she's connected and you turn on the Dell and connect it to the router .I'm guessing its a chost.

Sorry for raising from the dead, but this still isn't working...a more detailed thing about what's going on:

K, so one day I was using my webcam, then all of a sudden it was like "Sorry, this is in use by another program.", so I went to bed, woke up the next morning, my pc was going slow as hell (it has 1GB RAM in it), won't come out of standby when it goes in, and the usb ports don't work. I just did a total rest of Windows XP and it's still not working. The only new stuff in it was some RAM and that worked for like a week before the PC broke...my dad went in, look at the hardware, pulled out the PCU and accidentally broke a pin, so we just replaced it and it still doesn't work. Please help!

-Rez

P.S. My usb mouse light will turn on at the COMPAQ screen but as soon as the windows loading screen comes up, my usbs stop working...

this post is very confusing to me ,to say the least ,.you say your dad broke the processor and you replaced it and now its still doesn't work ,what still dosen't work the cpu or the usb device .maybe you got a bad mouse ,maybe you need to load correct usb drivers for the motherboard ,maybe you need to try a PS/2 mouse.
maybe you need to tell your dad to leave it alone and get him to take …

No, windows explorer and every other program I use, including ISO Recorder, says that there's no disk in. Which program should I use? I have MagicISO. I can't get nero because I have dial-up, so that would take forever. I checked my drive firmware. It's completely up to date. Also, another detail I left out: whenever I put the disk in, Windows slows down a lot.

something wrong with the burner then, it needs medical attention soon !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

but whenever I try to burn an ISO image or any type of file onto it, it says that it's not in.

.i just installed and ran that program its my opinion that it doesn't burn images to dvd's just cd.as it say the dvd is not usable ,but the blank cd is usable .
do you get this far,in the recorder section its says weather the dis is usable or not .

Decided to format my daughters computer with Windows XP but it all went pear shaped.

ok you formated it did you continue and install winxp after the format .

Now the computer won't boot up at all. It runs from the A drive boot up disc ok but then takes me to DOS prompt.

that what a bootdisk is for ,the dos prompt is where you type in the commands ,but you need to know what is it you want to do ,so you know what command you want to use.

Same from CD drive with Windows XP disc in. How do I get this PC booted up again?

install winxp

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FS690P and recently there has been some grinding from just below the F12 button. I unscrewed all the screws (except for the 1 special one that Sony conveniently added that needs a special screw driver to remove). I am fairly certain that it is the processor fan. The HDD is just off center beneath the mouse, so I don't think that it is the HDD.

My system does run, but very slowly. Twice now I've gotten a Windows "Blue screen of death" and had to restart. I'm afraid to keep using my laptop in fear of burning out the processor.

SO my question is, 1) can you purchase just a new fan for a Sony Laptop? 2) any tips on how to remove the special Sony screw beneath my machine? 3) Do you think there is any permanent damage to my processor? 4) any thoughts that this might not be the processor fan? 5) if there is permanent damage to the processor where can I purchase replacement parts? (preferably cheap ones).

Thank so much everyone!

yes you can buy a fan for it ,search e-bay for an idea of price .
and the special screw is usually cover for wireless device .and i remove it with a very small flat/straight screw driver .possible it could just be really dirty . i searched e-bay to no avail for you model .but did find others just to give you an idea of price range .

boot to the windows cd and go to R for repair and run a chkdsk /r , to check the hdd ,be careful wit UBCD4WIN ,there are programs on it that could wipe the hdd.
search google for how to use the windows recovery console if you don't know how to use it

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I think coincidence also ,you don't need to take the hdd out ,just unplug it .the long beep is either ram or video ,i think ,maybe ram
try putting live Linux back and booting to it .if it doesn't work, then try the ram ,if you have more than one ram chip ,try it with one and then the other .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

the battery has died ,won't hold a charge anymore ! they don't last forever,

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

short continuous beeps started emitting from the speaker???

Usually indicates bad ram or video device ,possible that you psu fried either one or both items .
bios beeps are code ,like one long and 3 short, or one long repeated, or one short repeated ,depending on the bios maker .check here , http://www.amptron.com/html/bios.beepcodes.html

I also reinstalled windows on the drive in my computer as the slave, but when i put it back into the other computer it comes up with the message it find a HD with an operating system.

doesn't really work like that ,as the windows install will see it not the same motherboard and will not load .,if you get to the place were it says it has windows on it ,then why not reload windows again from there .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Could you tell me what's over heating? The processor, the power supply?

it could be either one ,im not saying it is overheating just troubleshooting the problem with you .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

ANd how often do you suggest to change the thermal paste before it becomes Super Bloody Glue and be the cause for you to dish out on another mobo....

i really don't know how long ,all the ones that i had problem with belonged to others ,mine is about 3 1/2 yrs olds and i guess i changed it maybe twice .don't know for sure because im always removing it to use my board to test other 478 cpus.

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Probably pulled the lever to get the cpu off the socket a bit too abruptly and ended up with the whole socket kinda ripped, just a speculation, cos i have done it myself once on a fried motherboard...;P. I know not a very proud moment but that was the first ever cpu i was trying to take out. But then again i still had all cpu pins just fine apart from the motherboard left to be used as catflap(maybe not even that due to obvious reasons of cats health and safety).

Raj

yeah i have often pulled off cpu with out fliping the lever ,when trying to remove a heatsinc and fan ,beacuse of dried on thurmal paste ,but its just a matter of getting cpu off heatsinc and flipping the lever to reinstall cpu ,was for me anyway

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

sounds like it may be overheating ,that why it stops responding ,have you opened the case to clean ot fans and stuff of dust buildup .
also why are you install windows did something happen to the computer to require you to do so.

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

not sure what is meant by towell ,
but im guessing you didn't just bend the pins on the cpu, when i pend cpu pins i use a credit card on its side to run between the rows of pins and help straighten them .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

be thats my saving grace right there....

It sure is .,,,,zap zap !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

now if i could just follow my own advice for my personal computer i wouldn't be hear at 4am backing up s-hit,before this hdd crashes and while im doing my income taxes .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

yeah but then you get a C and a D , not one large one

the best way to have It, one for OS and one for storage/backup , when windows OS gets corrupt you don't loose all the important data ,just format c:\ and reload windows

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

if you format the 137 ,you can get the use of the rest of of the 500 by going to management tools in the maintenance section in the control panel and using the disk management section to format the rest of the drive . or just type this into run , compmgmt.msc

so if you click on the icon can you disconnect and refresh the wireless list and pick yourself if others appear in the list, and try again

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Okay, cool.

Is it possible without the restore CD?

no, you will need the recovery disk .
but if you are giving it away just format it and let the new owner worry about getting windows but on it .
to format it go to www.bootdisk.com and get a win98 boot disk and run fdisk
