It blocks every attempt to modify any file anywhere. I give Steam and all its subsidiary .exes permission and then it says that there is no permission to modify 'Documents'. I just bought the darned machine to game with and it is freaking driving me nuts. Any suggestions on where to go to fix this?

Today I tried to install the Windows 10 Fall Creator's Update. It failed with the message ![2017-10-18_161217.png](/attachments/large/3/837de23baab769b190bf69bbceed71ee.png "align-center") I found this peculiar because I don't have that application installed. I **do** have Macrium Reflect (Free) version 6 but certainly not Drive Image 7 (Powerquest). As usual, clicking the Support link took me to a totally unrelated page. Has anyone else had a problem with the update? By the way, clicking the Uninstall button produced ![2017-10-18_163207.png](/attachments/large/3/1a176108f644c78ce93a763939cf7c77.png "align-center")

When I retired in 2008 after carrying a cell phone for years on standby for our control centre I swore I would never get another cell phone. I was wrong. It took ten years but I finally broke down and got a SpeakOut pay-as-you-go FiGO Ultra. It's got everything I was looking for except for one small thing. It didn't come with an e-book reader. There are a number of free e-book readers available on teh Chrome store but a number of them stream ads. Can anyone suggest a free e-book reader for Android that does not stream ads? The …

I'm getting really confused browsing newegg motherboard opitons: Don't know what socket type I need or want. Don't …

Linux Mint So I'm trying to learn French but I'm running into some complications when it comes to finding a good keyboard layout. Here are the layouts that I've tried so far: English (US) English (international Alt Gr dead keys) English (UK, international with dead keys) English (UK, extended WinKeys) So far all have fallen short of what I need. I think only one of these listed above will allow me to type in the French c with a tail character ç. Most of the rest allow áéíóú, the problem here is that most of these accents are going the …

My brother has a Windows 10 laptop. I use Linux so I'm a little out of the loop when it comes to Windows. He's having problems and wants me to wipe it out and re-install it. Will I need to load the OS onto a USB drive first? If so where and how do I get to that menu? Or is it more likely to work like a tablet where everything can web wiped out and re-installed from the interface with no additional hardware needed? Thanks.

I'm looking for software that will allow someone at one end to talk into a camera and stream to a Raspberry Pi on the other end. It's going to be a prop for a live action role play game I'm running for later in the year and I'd like to get a jump on figuring out what I'll need. It's literally going to be a "mirror mirror on the wall" type thing. I'll have a laptop/camera or other setup which will allow the person in the mirror to talk to the players through the rasp pi, and a router which …

From Stardock's newsletter I read "Handles are killing your PC" and checked in on the apps and handles to discover the stock Killer Network app was way out there at over 906,000 (906 THOUSAND) handles. This was a pretty interesting find and had me off to the maker for latest suite and drivers. Result? The 906,000 number dropped to 900 handles or a thousand fold less. Here's the full text of the message and link. "Handles are killing your PC The handle issue is a pretty big deal, and you may never have even heard of them. Let's fix that. …

A while ago I had a file on my windows desktop with a lot of my email accounts that I use for very specific purposes like online forums or shopping, and each one's password. I don't know what on earth has happened but I can't find that file anywhere. I did a whole "\*.txt" search on the C: but I still didn't find it and I don't remember ever deleting it. What's a good program I could use to recover files and specifcally .txt files? Thanks.

It has long since been argued that continued exposure to something over a length of time will reduce the shock value of whatever it happens to be, from violence in movies to swearing in public. Now according to a report researchers at the Brigham Young University have suggested that the availability of 'pocket porn' via the Internet and mobile phones has led to a sea change in how women react to pornography. The full study is to be published in the Journal of Adolescent Research in January, but enough detail has been leaked ahead of publication for us to know …

Inbetween contracts over the last year or so I have been beavering away building a CMS with a difference. https://www.graphia.co.uk/ It's aimed at companies that have huge libraries of documents that every employee needs (operating procedures, handbooks, guides, etc) locked away in inflexible propriatory formats (aka Sharepoint/Confluence). * documents are stored in plain text (Markdown) files * the 'database' is a Git repository (but end-users needn't know!) * authors can work online using the web editor (but power users can clone the repo and work in whichever editor they like) * the documentation is 'published' to a static site, the …

I think the community in general will benefit from this discussion. I have an IT horror story I would like to tell everybody about. Additionally I have discovered some solutions to some IT problems, which may have been faced by others in the community. A few years ago I started going to college, and got wholluped by a gang of social engineers in the omaha/bellevue area. Unbenounced to me they were actually preforming skits on me in order to preform black mail attacks at a later date. Now you may believe that if you aren't doing anything wrong you should …

Somehow, I think my OS X is borked. Whenever you mouseover a menu, it's supposed to highlight, right? Well, mine doesn't... Also, my dock magnification is turned on, but if I highlight apps on my dock, they don't magnify, and it doesn't say the apps name above its icon. If I click on an app, the dock magnifies to it, but if I hover over another app the dock doesn't move (and is still magnified over the app I clicked on). This stinks :-(. I don't even know what to search for, "mouseover not working?" Anyone know what's going on?

As PCs age you enounter "The Dead PC" from time to time. Long ago I even owned a PC repair shop and learned a lot from the experience. But fast forward to today. While I know a bit about PC design something of a mystery to me is why folk have been pushing back on a common cheap thing to try on dead machines. Pop in a new CMOS battery. I could go on why this can cause a PC to hang but here if it's the usual CR2032 we buy these in bulk for the office at 25 cents …
