you should check out doing a spy ware scan.
How old is the laptop, reason for asking i am kinda leaning toward there is an issue with the CPU.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

any type of connection you use to get to the internet on any PC you should install antivirus and firewall. there are many free and excellent ones out there. and yes connect the DSL to the router then the pc's to the router.

for each user you MUST add them to the domain that you create the policy on

use a program to lock the EXE file of the programs you do not want her to use, try this Also create an account for her that she cant install any programs on the pc. her account does not need to password protected. it will only restrict her from installing and having acces to system critical areas on the pc.

for this to be effective you would have to uninstall all current instances of the chat programs, because when you create an account these programs will automatically (most of the time) be available to any account that is on the PC

Ok I know its weird.. but can someone tell me if its possible to downgrade Windows XP (which can be bought off the shelf) to Windows NT?

I have heard so many things, and its getting confusing. Could someone help to clarify.

1. Its impossible to downgrade XP to NT cause it has different hardward inside. So, means its not a straightforward thing. True or False? False

2. Its possible to run 2 different Operating Systems on One PC. Using something called VM Wave? True or False? True you can run any amount of operating system in VMware I have 12 in my VM ware you can also run many operating system from one hard drive BUT you can only start one at a time

I need to run the NT computers cause the equipment in my Plant are using that operating system in their E-proms. And to change them out will be costly and cumbersome.. you can install Windows NT as a dual boot system on the present Xp box, BUT you should partition the drive first or just wipe XP off.

Thanks alot.

there is no option in XP to downgrade to NT, as a matter of fact it's not possible in any opearting syste, EXCEPT for thos that come with vista or if you ran an upgrade from within the operating system then you can resort back to the previous operating system
for example if you upgrade windows 2000 to Xp you will be able to …

remember that end user are loginng on to the domain that issue policies. then in AD you set additional user rights and restriction.

Don't worry about it although its good to creat a test OU and copy from default setting when you have things working you can either rename the test OU or copy it to the New OU you want to create.

the only other way around is a clean install then you would deleted all partition and create one new partition.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

go into control panel >network connection, and tell us if you have a ethernet connection. if it's not listed, go to system properties and see if any devices name ethernet controller has a red x, yellow question mark or yellow spot with an exclamation ! sign.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

you will have to use a 3rd party software like partition magic or acronis.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

yep, did you download any of the programs i recommended in my previous post. you are going to need to do a clean of your system. after you have done the scan with those programs we will suggest a more deeper and thorough cleaning. then set you up with an antivirus and firewall ( and the best part they are very good and free)

And to dispense the myth about browsers and virus. you don't need to have a web browser to get a virus, the mere fact you have an internet connection you can get a virus. you can get virus from external medias, Flash Drives, CD, DVD, and Floppy Disk., the best protection is having an updated virus protection program.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

look in control panel add/remove and is the program listed. highlight it, click on change and reinstall the program.

Here is another disturbing theory, do you have antivirus and spyware installed on you pc.

check the jumpers on the hard drive, are they both on the save ide cable. if so, remove the clave, set the master to single hard drive then try to use the bios to detect it. after you boot up shut down set the master jumper to master with slave and set the slave jumper to slave..
this that does not resolve your issue some times cable select work best for some bios, so put the master at the end of the cable and the slave at the next notch. and set both jumpers to cable select.

this is where a auto install cd would be of great help. but for now run chkdsk /f it will tell you that it will run the next time the pc restart. restart the pc, if you need to read the log to know if there are any errors go to event viewer and click application then winlogon, the log will tell you if there are any errors on the disk.

do what the guys suggest contact dell to get th recovery disk. because without that we would not be able to help you

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

seeing that the hard drive ahd data on it that you would never need you should have done a standard format. this will do a better job of cleaning the drive basically the quick format only semi clean , it's ;like wiping a car windshield and when it dries you still see the water marks. a standard format goes deeper. you should also run chkdsk on the drive to see if any area is in danger of going bad.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

what is you ip address open command prompt and do ipconfig /all and can we safely assume you are using windows

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

you seem to be on the right track but to shed some more light a wipe is just like a format. the mania difference is the setting you can use in a wipe, you have to option to wipe the disk as if it was never used before or write zeros to the entire disk. in a wipe data is virtually unrecoverable. in a format you can get back data.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

it is quite obvious that PG2 is the problem, when you did the reinstall do you do a quick format or a standard format.

Hello,

I have spent 2 days trying to find the answer to my problem and nothing works. I dont understand what is wrong and could truly use the help of this forum please.

The problem: I tried to clean up some room on my HD and deleted some files and etc. Then I figured it was time to do a diskDefrag because it has been a long time since. The Diskdefrag finished with no problems at all and windows was working just fine. I then shutdown the laptop and the next morning when I tried to start it, is when I had the bad luck.

When I power on the laptop, it goes thru all the steps, except after the black screen with the windows logo comes on with the stats bar, it goes away and the blue screen of death comes on with the following:

** stop: C000021a {Fatal System Error} The windows Logon Process System process terminated unexpectedly with status 0xc0000135

The system has been shut down **

I have tried every option the F8 Menu...from safe mode, safe mode with networking, to Last Know Configuration...and nothing freaking works....THEN I booting off a copied Windows XP Pro CD, and clicked 'ENTER' (Which all the forums say to choose that option) BUT when I did that the next screen said the following:

** Setup did not find any Hard disk drives installed in your computer. Setup cannot continue. To quit setup press F3 **

PLEASE...Someone help me …

if the cd says for HP PC only, it only means that it was tailored for a HP pc, basically HP change a few non essential thing like logo and stuff like that, the system properties will have the HP logo,

but you can always down load the SP for windows and install yourself or simple go the the windows update web page and get it

please help me. i have had my computer for just over a year now and when i went to turn on my computer after school, its fans went to max rpm and only no input signal appeared. then after a few attempts to reboot, it was working again. but it's doing this every time i try to restart or turn on after shutting down.

i know its not a PSU problem because i replaced it with a 300W one that came with my pc. (took out the 8800 first of course)

also these problems started when my pc would not allow me to use a PCI-E card like my 8800 anymore it just started using onboard

here are my specs, (what i know)

Mobo: some sort of ASUS AM2
CPU: AMD Athlon X2 +5200 Dual-Core (2.7GHz each core)
Graphics: Nvidia GeForce 800GTS BFG OC
PSU: Codegen 530W
HDD: 2 IDE hard drives (80GB) (40GB)
RAM: 1.7GB 600MHz
OS: Windows XP Home edition x32
Fans: 2

I personally think this might be either a POST, CMOS or motherboard error but no error beeps are excreted by the internal speaker.

if you like, i will be on MSN most of the time and will be listening to any suggestions

you can alway go for the refurbished drive, you have to make sure its the size that advertised, the correct file system and the drive integrity, which is going to be extemely difficult. you run a risk with hard drives, but an even greater one with refurbished ones. as for doing upgrade on a laptop, apart from memory and the ocassional hard drive, dont waste your cash on that, save and get a better one. you would be saving approximately $150.00 on a refurbished, but think about the consequences down the line when it start to give a world of problems. maybe one week after you acquire it. when if you buy a new one you have at least one year warranty on it and you can pout that extra $150 to snazz it up. but it all comes down to what you can afford and peace of mind.

My computer's motherboard got toasted so I replaced it with new one.
Everything is still attached just like before. The hard disc(with windows XP installed), CDROM, same 1gb DDR RAM(checked the new motherboard's compatibility and it should work fine).. etc.

Now, whats interesting is that I checked CMOS setup and nothing was wrong.
USB support/legacy support, blah blah were all enabled.

Keyboard works before it loads Windows XP. I can navigate through CMOS setup and everything.
Once it loads Windows XP, it shows "please reactivate your windows because your system hardware has been heavily modified since last boot". THIS IS NORMAL IF YOU MAKE SYSTEM WIDE CHANGES IN WINDOWS
Thats when keyboard and mouse don't work. Im assuming something is going on between the windows and USB. TRY USING A PS2 KEYBOARD, OR SWAP THE SLOTS BETWEEN THE KEYBOARD AND THE MOUSE.

THEN, I decided to just re-install Windows XP, so I put in the good old GateWay recovery CD.
I went into CMOS setup again, made the computer to boot to CDROM before the hard drive.
Now, the computer reads the CD from the CDROM just fine, but I can't use the keyboard again once it reads it.

I have no friggin' idea what is going on. Somebody please help.

simple put your NIC is fried. thats the worst. if not here are a few thing, if you get a 169 Ip address it can be fixed, but if the fix resort back to the 169 then the card is definitely fried. is this card on board or PCI.
no consequence of having a wireless and wired connection. the point of this is that you can bridge the connections.(make them as one)

Dima is on the money, let DHCP handle the ip setting for all PC. more over you should only want to give static IP when you want to keep a close tab/watch on pc activity. this can still be done with DHCP but ever so often the pc get a different Ip and you would have to check the log for all the different Ip it was assigned. as opposed to a static.
