Just to be sure, run Windows XP setup from the CD and when prompted, choose to repair your installation. That way, all corrupt/missing files will be replaced and you won't lose any of your settings.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

more likely, a virus has modified the folder.htt file. You can use the Windows 98 CD to extract the file and place the extracted file in C:\Windows\Web.

First off, delete the file folder.htt from C:\Windows\web.
next, pop your Win98 CD in the drive. Click Start>run, type sfc and click OK.

In the SFC window, click the second option (Extract a specific file). Type the file to be extracted as folder.htt, the restore from path to D:\Win98 (where D: is your CD ROM drive letter. modify this appropriately) and set the "extract file to" box to C:\Windows\web. Then click extract. This will extract the original folder.htt file. and you should have no problems. Just to be sure, run a full virus scan followed by a spyware scan.

Could be a corrupt graphics card, or a bent pin in the monitor connector. Try a different gdx card and ensure that no pins on the plug are bent.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Try reinstalling the drivers. These would either be on the motherboard CD, or on a separate CD which came with your sound card

Does your ISP provide static or dynamic IP assignment? If it's static, you'll need to enter the settings provided to you in the connection's properties (IP address, gateway, DNS servers etc). If it's dynamic, make sure the appropriate setting is enabled.

I tried the Vista build 5308, and I found the interface kinda confusing. Sure it was pretty, animated and all out eye candy, but that isn't the primary goal of an OS, is it? Infact, I found the transparencies to be more of an irritant than beneficial. In terms of performance, I found it a bit sluggish (though it is a beta, so I can ignore that). What I really find exasperating is the very fact that if you want to use Vista in all it's glory, you need to have a graphics card with DX9 support inbuilt. Lots of people, however, run with IGPs, so they won't be able to see the "clearer" view of Vista. Let's wait for the final release and see what useful feature MS throws at us.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Totally agree with what you say, except that I don't trust samsung hard drives. I've used 3 of them and all of them keep failing on me. Not to mention a samsung cd rom as well. Rest of the brands are just fine.

Try popping the RAM sticks out and cleaning the sticks and the RAM slots. From what I can guess from your beeps (as much as I can decipher, that is), this seems to be a RAM problem. But as DMR said, give us the exact beep sequence and we'll go from there.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I'd say your best bet is to contact Dell, as there seem to be multiple problems.

Also, it's best to have the battery in the lapppy while you use the AC adapter, as in this setup, the computer receives power from the battery and the adapter continually recharges the battery. This makes it less susceptible to voltage spikes which could fry your lappy.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Can you hear the BIOS beep? If no, check all your connections, specifically the CPU, RAM and display. If it does beep, does it give a quick, short single beep, or a long/repeating beep? If it's the latter, check your motherboard's manual to see what the beep you hear signifies and go from there.

As an addendum to nizzy1115's suggesion, you could also remove the BIOS battery for about an hour and then try starting the computer. This effectively clears the CMOS and resets it to default, fail safe values.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Whoa, major problems there. Since you want to wipe everything clean, I'd suggest you get a new Windows installation disc from your local PC store. Just make sure you buy the requisite number of licenses. Use these CDs to install your Operating System. During setup, you'll be given the option to repartition your drives. Simply delete all partitions detected and recreate them as per your requirements.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

If you're an nVidia fan, you could go for a GeForce 6600 based card. If however, you don't have any budget constraints, I'd strongly suggest the ASUS EN7800GT Dual Core card.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Disconnect all non essential hardware and start with a barebones system. If the system starts up, connect all other devices one by one until you encounter the problem again. The last connected device is the trouble maker.

Typically, I've seen this problem due to faulty RAM, faulty HDD, or faulty PSU.

You took the words out of my mouth, caperjack. I just don't see how the CPU temp can go that low. The average ambient temperature would be around 32 degrees celsius. How does your CPU stay at 8 degrees C?

It's possible your temperature sensor is busted

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Excellent

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I am running a p42.4ghz and I run at 8-10 degrees celcius, so I know 55 is a bad number.

8-10 degrees celsius? Are you using some sort of liquid cooling, or is your room temperature that cold? I doubt even a top end air cooling solution will be able to bring the temperature down to 8-10 degrees celcius. Normally, CPUs run at a temperature range of 35-50 degrees celcius.(but that varies on the ambient temperature).

In india, where I'm from the ambient temp itself is about 37-42 deg celsius in summers. Even then, my Athlon 64 2800+, over clocked to 2.13GHz, works at about 47 deg celsius.

or you could change your DVD drive's region to 2. Be advised that you can only make this change 5 times, after which the region will be permanently changed to whatever you had set it to last. You can change the region from device manager.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

try cleaning out your system restore cache. open system properties, click the system restore tab, check "Turn off system restore on all drives", click apply, click ok on the warning that pops up. This will disable system restore and delete all restore point. After this is done, uncheck the same box and click OK. See if this helps.

Most probably, the partition table's gone corrupt. Don't try to copy/format the drive. Just boot into recovery console using the Windows CD (or use command prompt. I prefer recovery console as I feel it gives you access to powerful diagnostic tools) and run 'chkdsk /r E:' (or whatever is the external disk's drive letter). This should solve your problems. Be advised that this will take quite a lot of time for your 250 Gig drive. I suggest you leave it on over night.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

It would seem to me that one or more of the semiconductor ICs in the drive have become toast.

There's nothing you can do save get a new drive

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Does Device Manager show the Driver provider as Microsoft, and Digital Signer as Microsoft Windows Publisher? If yes, then it's perfectly normal. These drivers are standard ODD drivers and no other drivers are required if you want to use your drives solely for reading CDs/DVDs.

If on the other hand you want to write CDs/DVDs, then the required drivers are packaged with your burning software (Nero, EasyCD Creator etc). Though these won't show up in Devie Manager. Device Manager will always show the microsoft drivers.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Yes, it's normal. The descripancy arises because hard disk manufacturers advertise by saying 1 GB=1,000 MB but in reality, 1Gb=1,024MB

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

After changing the preferences in the BIOS, are you saving the changes before exiting? Lots of people just exit the BIOS without saving the changes made.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

If you can burn RW, but not R, and the disc is fine, the problem lies in the recorder itself. See if you can get it serviced, or get a new one.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

If the drive is a refurbished one, you could have problems. If you can get it replaced under warranty, do it. Otherwise, well, just be wary when you buy stuff online the next time, and stay away from OEM hardware.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

It's true. Most OEMs have a partition that's hidden from the user, and is used for storing diagnostic tools. If you use the media that come with the computer, it will re create that partition and there won't be a blamed thing you can do about it.

What I recommend is that you can go out and buy a retail copy of Windows, and install this on your computer. When you run setup from this new CD, you will have the option of deleting any/all partitions on your hard disk, including the hidden one

Hope this helps. Revert back if you need any clarifications.

Cheers

Hey all

I just got the ASUS DRW-1608P2S DVD-RAM drive. The specifications for this drive state that this drive can write to CD-Rs at 40x in CAV mode and upto 32x in PCAV mode. I bought a few Moser Baer 52x CD-Rs, but nero only allows me to write at 32x max. How do I get the thing to write at 40x? The disc I'm using is a 52x CD-R, confirmed on my plain jane CD-RW drive, ASUS CRW-5232AS

I also got a few Moser Baer 16x DVD-R media, but again nero allows me to write at a maximum speed of 12x. How do I get it to write at 16x? The drive supports 16x speed in CAV mode, and upto 12x in PCAV mode.

I'm guessing the writing method (CAV or PCAV) has something to do with this. What exactly does this mean? How do I get the drive to write function in CAV mode and get full writing speeds?

Thanks

You sure you're calling the file from the server, and not from the local file? That is to say, are you opening your file by double clicking it in explorer, or are you calling it by typing an address like this in your browser address bar -- http://localhost:8080/test.php ? If you call the file directly from explorer, you'll see the code. Calling it from the server tells the PHP engine to process the PHP file and send the reesults to the browser.

Yeah, I used Vista build 5308 (Feb 06). Seemed pretty cool, but there are still quite a bit of bugs. On my system (Athlon 64 2800+, nForce4, 1 Gig, 120 Gig, FX5200 with 128 MB), it seemed fine at firs, but then got sluggish.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

you need to get legacy versions of AV packages, like norton A/V 4 or 5

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

you need to enable ACPI in Power Options

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

did you check the smps ? Also, what wattage is it?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

its best to get paired RAM together if you want dual channel to work without a hitch. I'd suggest you sell the 512 stick and get 2x512 sticks from the same manufacturer.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Been a while since Ive been here, but id suggest you first reinstall you OS and then reinstall WMP. This may sound drastic, but should take care of any file corruption problems you may have. Just make sure you choose upgrade, and not a clean install
