I suspect it's a dying laptop! If you have to ask such a question, then perhaps you are too unsure to be fiddling with the thing yourself, and would be best advised to take it to a repair shop to be looked at. If you have any confidence in your …

Hey hell, I'm no electrician - I'm a home handyman. And we have a bit different wiring here in Ausssie to you lot. But what you're describing sounds like exactly what happens when some dill hooks up a live wire to an earth wire somewheres in the house circuit. It'll …

Whilst I'd agree that this doesn't sound too promising, I wouldn't go 'trashing' a laptop without first ensuring that it was, indeed, 'dead' and not simply experiencing some small problem. I'm afraid that you haven't provided enough clarity of detail about the make and model of your laptop for anyone …
....i connected everything ....
That's probably part of the problem right there. Please follow the instructions in this topic, and then report back to let us know if it works in 'barebones' configuration or indeed if you've been able to isolate the source of the problem: http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread27079.html

That's definitely all you need to do. Make sure you choose to install XP to the new partition, and the dual-boot menu will be created for you.

Not necessarily correct that a mobile chip will be recognised by the system BIOS on your motherboard. It may have similar architecture but it has different ID, and it'd be 'pot luck' if your board recognised it or not. Work through the 'Read this first' sticky in this topic, however. …

Close all open applications and then open a command prompt (to do this select Run from the Start menu) and in the Open: box type: regsvr32 /s urlmon.dll You don't have to restart the computer afterwards.

The RAM modules are incompatible with your motherboard, I'm sorry to say. Not all PC133 RAM modules are identical technology. I do not believe that anything will make them detect correctly. mightn't be what you want to hear, but it's the truth. I've come across quite a few older systems …

It usually means that Windows doesn't have enough 'hooks' left to 'hang' programs on, not that you've run out of physical memory. If you haven't got heaps of programs open, or rebooting doesn't help get you going again, then it's probably an indication that there's lots of nasty 'internet intruders' …

Agreed. The absolute WORST place to get hardware device drivers is from Microsoft. If the 'newest drivers' have been sourced from Microsoft rather than from the hardware manufacturer, then that could well explain the problem.

It's an ID code for the disc used to install Windows on the machine. It's not the "CD key" which you have to enter during the installation, but it IS a unique ID 'name' for the specific install disc that you have. In other words, it's a publically viewable unique …

Have you got a make and model for that computer please? The 'HDD button' thing is rather peculiar, as I'm sure you've realised from some of the responses so far, and it'd help to know just what your PC is.

It certainly concerns me to hear of a heatsink/fan unit being replaced in this way. Definitely, power cords should be disconnected. Preferably the motherboard should be removed from the case and supported on a flat, cushioned surface. The pressure involved in clipping and unclipping a heatsink is enough to crack …

Replacing the motherboard would not only be easier, it would most likely be less expensive as well. Unfortunately, though, you're unlikely to find a new motherboard which would be able to use the SD-RAM that is installed in the one you have. But as suggested above, a motherboard shouldn't really …

Agreed. You only need reset CMOS as BuggZ has said, to allow the system to boot with default and autodetect settings. It's a simple procedure and a common task faced by overclockers who've pushed settings too far to allow the system to boot :D

The 'H' in that identification most likely indicates that the memory chips on the module are manufactured by Hynix. It's possibly just a BIOS identification problem. Try downloading and installing the latest BIOS update for your motherboard and see if that fixes things for you. You haven't really provided enough …

This geneaology article should help explain the generally accepted relationship titles: http://www.genealogy.com/16_cousn.html Meanings vary for different cultures though. In Indigenous Australian society for example, which my own family adheres to, only the terms 'cousin' and 'close cousin' are basically used. 'Cousin' means same generation relatives other than siblings, and 'close …

Currently using a 21" CRT for my work PC and a 17" CRT for my games rig. I plan sometime soon to get a 19" LCD for the work rig and use it in tandem with the 17"CRT. The big CRT will be better suited to the gaming rig.
