Re: I suspect it's a dying laptop! If you have to ask such a question, then perhaps you are too unsure to be fiddling with the thing yourself, and would be best advised to take it to a repair shop to be looked at. If you have any confidence in your …
Re: Hey hell, I'm no electrician - I'm a home handyman. And we have a bit different wiring here in Ausssie to you lot. But what you're describing sounds like exactly what happens when some dill hooks up a live wire to an earth wire somewheres in the house circuit. It'll …
Re: Whilst I'd agree that this doesn't sound too promising, I wouldn't go 'trashing' a laptop without first ensuring that it was, indeed, 'dead' and not simply experiencing some small problem. I'm afraid that you haven't provided enough clarity of detail about the make and model of your laptop for anyone …
Re:
....i connected everything ....
That's probably part of the problem right there. Please follow the instructions in this topic, and then report back to let us know if it works in 'barebones' configuration or indeed if you've been able to isolate the source of the problem: http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread27079.html
Re: That's definitely all you need to do. Make sure you choose to install XP to the new partition, and the dual-boot menu will be created for you.
Re: Not necessarily correct that a mobile chip will be recognised by the system BIOS on your motherboard. It may have similar architecture but it has different ID, and it'd be 'pot luck' if your board recognised it or not. Work through the 'Read this first' sticky in this topic, however. …
Re: Close all open applications and then open a command prompt (to do this select Run from the Start menu) and in the Open: box type: regsvr32 /s urlmon.dll You don't have to restart the computer afterwards.
Re: The RAM modules are incompatible with your motherboard, I'm sorry to say. Not all PC133 RAM modules are identical technology. I do not believe that anything will make them detect correctly. mightn't be what you want to hear, but it's the truth. I've come across quite a few older systems …
Re: Moving this to the 'Browsers' section so that it can receive assistance.
Re: Hi porchy and welcome to Daniweb :D I've moved this topic to the appropriate forum section for you, where I'm sure it will receive some assistance.
Re: It usually means that Windows doesn't have enough 'hooks' left to 'hang' programs on, not that you've run out of physical memory. If you haven't got heaps of programs open, or rebooting doesn't help get you going again, then it's probably an indication that there's lots of nasty 'internet intruders' …
Re: Agreed. The absolute WORST place to get hardware device drivers is from Microsoft. If the 'newest drivers' have been sourced from Microsoft rather than from the hardware manufacturer, then that could well explain the problem.
Re: It's an ID code for the disc used to install Windows on the machine. It's not the "CD key" which you have to enter during the installation, but it IS a unique ID 'name' for the specific install disc that you have. In other words, it's a publically viewable unique …
Re: Have you got a make and model for that computer please? The 'HDD button' thing is rather peculiar, as I'm sure you've realised from some of the responses so far, and it'd help to know just what your PC is.
Re:
I reinstalled Windows XP on my computer....
Need some more information here. That comment could means lots of different things to lots of different people. What sort of computer do you have? Does it have a Windows CD or does it have a Recovery CD? Did you format the hard …
Hi all, I'm currently experiencing excruciatingly slow page loading at DaniWeb, even on 1500K ADSL, and was wondering if others are having the same experience? Please let us know your connection type and speed, your location and your experience of page load times. It's valuable feedback. My own current experience …
Re: Hi, I've posted standard troubleshooting procedures in the pinned "Read this first" topic at top of page. Stripping a system back to basics and systematically trying it out by adding components back in one by one is the only surefire way of identifying where the problem lies. Any other advice, …
![]() | Re: More because I'm scrupulously honest! Daniweb is wonderful. Daniweb is growing and improving constantly. Daniweb is a place I'm proud to be involved with. Daniweb is certainly moving towards 'greatness'. But I don't hand out superlatives very easily, and 'greatness' is not one I'd yet accord to any computer help … |
Re:
...And yes, you are correct, this thread should probably be in the Networking forum rather than here. I don't have privs to move it, though.
I've been pretty busy elsewhere for a few weeks and have 'missed' dealing with quite a few misplaced topics. On reading through this though, I …
Re: Sorry to tell you this, but Mom's PC has reached the end of its useful life for some reason. Those are 'blown' capacitors which are quite important for the system to work, and although they CAN be replaced at an electronics repair shop I'd suggest that the exercise would be …
Re: That is not enough information from which to make any 'diagnosis'. Please make use of the "Read this first" pinned topic at top of page to troubleshoot your system in a 'bare bones' configuration and report back when you have a better idea of what your situation is.
Re: It is worth running a memory test for sure, and if the RAM tests OK then the next thing to suspect is the hard drive. Download the diagnostic software available from Western Digital website, run the tests and if they come up error free the best way forward is to …
Re: You've mentioned reinstalling Windows. Is that a format/install? If so, are you sure the appropriate motherboard chipset drivers are loaded?
Re: It certainly concerns me to hear of a heatsink/fan unit being replaced in this way. Definitely, power cords should be disconnected. Preferably the motherboard should be removed from the case and supported on a flat, cushioned surface. The pressure involved in clipping and unclipping a heatsink is enough to crack … ![]()
Re: Replacing the motherboard would not only be easier, it would most likely be less expensive as well. Unfortunately, though, you're unlikely to find a new motherboard which would be able to use the SD-RAM that is installed in the one you have. But as suggested above, a motherboard shouldn't really …
Re: Excuse me for interrupting this wonderful discussion, but do you mob realise just how silly it looks to the rest of the woeld that you have a 'First amendment' to your Constitution guaranteeing that people be allowed 'free exercise' of their religion, yet expect people to pay allegiance to a …

Re: Which Windows version please? This needs to be moved to the Tech section.
Re: Yep. Tad harsh. But Narue has her own unique way of saying "I don't care" I suppose  I'm not too fussed either, to tell the truth. To me, the strength of a forum community isn't the number of people who've ever signed up - it's the number of people …
Re: Agreed. You only need reset CMOS as BuggZ has said, to allow the system to boot with default and autodetect settings. It's a simple procedure and a common task faced by overclockers who've pushed settings too far to allow the system to boot :D
Re: Try following the advice in the "Read this first" pinned topic at top of page.
Re: The 'H' in that identification most likely indicates that the memory chips on the module are manufactured by Hynix. It's possibly just a BIOS identification problem. Try downloading and installing the latest BIOS update for your motherboard and see if that fixes things for you. You haven't really provided enough …
Re: Which version of windows, please? Did you get a Windows CD with the machine. When the power cord has come out of the back it has probably corrupted data on the hard drive, causing the system to have problems starting up. You may need to boot from CD or startup …

Re: This geneaology article should help explain the generally accepted relationship titles: http://www.genealogy.com/16_cousn.html Meanings vary for different cultures though. In Indigenous Australian society for example, which my own family adheres to, only the terms 'cousin' and 'close cousin' are basically used. 'Cousin' means same generation relatives other than siblings, and 'close …
Re: Hi Lukex, and welcome. I've split your question into a topic of its own because we ask that people refrain from piggy-backing their questions onto another topic. It's highly unlikely that your problem will be identical to someone else's, and your 'freeze' issue is certainly a different problem to a …
Re: Got me beat how you could describe Maddox as 'better writing'. Better than what?
Re: errmmmmmm......... Do not turn that computer on! Open the system case and clean it free of dust inside. Then turn the power on briefly to see which fan(s) aren't working. Turn off immediately. Replace the non-functiong fans and then try to see if the thing will work. If that sounds …
Re: That sensor is supposed to go UNDERNEATH the processor. The wires feed in between the pins, the sensor gets taped to the underside of the processor directly beneath the cpu core, and you're supposed to use special thermal adhesive tape to stick it there, not double sided sticky tape! There …
Re: First thing you do is slow down and decide to write properly, using sentences, full stops and the best spelling you can manage, so that we can read your comments more easily. Get rid of all those silly dots that make my eyes bleed! Your typing suggests you're probably in …

Re: Currently using a 21" CRT for my work PC and a 17" CRT for my games rig. I plan sometime soon to get a 19" LCD for the work rig and use it in tandem with the 17"CRT. The big CRT will be better suited to the gaming rig.
Re: Oh dear! It sounds like you've had a power interruption whilst the system was updating. When that happens the motherboard is rendered unable to function. You'd best get it checked at a repair shop or the place you purchased it from. It will probably require either a new BIOS chip …
Re: When you say the computer "wasn't on" do you mean that Windows had been shut down? When that happens, there is still power to the motherboard. The machine has to be turned off either at the isolation switch on the power supply unit, if one is present, or at the …
![]() | Re: DVD burners are quite inexpensive. For making backups of your DVDs there is no suitable alternative. DVD movies won't fit on a CD without reducing quality beyond the point where it is worth watching. Moved to Windows software. Tech questions in tech sections please! |
Recently we've been getting a lot of questions from people who basically have the same problem - they've assembled a PC but it won't start up correctly! There is a standard troubleshooting procedure for that scenario which everyone should follow, and I'll describe it to you in a moment. But …
Re: I suspect this may be a power supply unit problem, but I doubt very much that it relates to wattage. 350W should be fine unless there are heaps of drives and other components installed. The problem will most likely be that it's a cheap, generic power unit, which doesn't provide … |
