Hiya and welcome. You'll find, in the menu list at left, a link to the 'Web Development' section. Find the appropriate subsections there and you can ask all the questions you like :D Cheers

Identify the make and model of your laptop. Visit the manufacturer website and check their support section for information about your particular laptop. There will possibly be information provided there which tells you haw to restore system files, reapair Windows etc on that laptop. Many laptops have the system and …

I've moved this to Hardware, where it belongs. Actually, there's one more bit of information in that report that gives a hint:
DAC type: Internal DAC(400MHz)
With video RAM operating at 400MHz, the alternatives are limited to a 'vanilla' 9600 or a 9600SE. 'Vanilla' cards are actually rather rare, …

What operating systems are installed on the two systems? A simple network using only a crossover network cable, as mentioned, is one method, if both systems have ethernet capability. If the PC has a CD burner, then that is also a cheap and easy method. (If it hasn't then it …

Your link only led to an index page on that site, so it's unclear just what you have been using. The device you need, however, is called a 'USB external drive caddy'. You should ensure that it accomodates a 2.5" IDE drive, if that is what's used in your laptop.

What you describe won't work anyway, so don't bother. If you have Windows 98, the system will not boot from the SCSI drive. If you have Windows 2000 or Windows XP, the boot files will need to remain on the current C:\ drive for the system to boot successfully. I'm …

Printed magazine content is usually written many weeks before publication. WinFS will not even be fully implemented in Loghorn, according to more recent reports.

Woulda been best to do an 'In place upgrade' if you wanted to leave programs and files in place. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341&Product=winxp Pruning Registry entries is only for two types of user: * Very advanced, knowledgeable users * Foolish users.

caperjack has the right idea. You need to change the boot order in BIOS setup to make CD-ROM the first boot device. If your copy of Windows 98 doesn't allow for booting from the CD (some don't) then you'll need a Windows 98 startup diskette to boot from, and you …

Boot into Safe mode. Run the spyware programs from there to remove stubborn intruders. From within Safe mode, uninstall any crappy downloaded programs. If "the missus" is like many other "the missuses" (sorry for the stereotype there people - I was referring to an androgynous 'the missus') then there's bound …

Yes, but if it's a cheap, generic PSU you mifght still have stability problems. but then, you can have stability problems with generic PSUs regardless of their wattage.

Whilst I would certainly not use the type of terminology in the previous post, i'd certainly have to agree with the basic thrust of it. When a relationship has broken down to the extent that husband and/or wife are playing 'spy games' and using surveillance techniques on each other, then …

Unless the original hard drive is malfunctioning, you can add the new drive as a secondary one as others have said. There is no need to replace the original if it still works.

I'd suggest you stop using that PC until it's looked at. Sounds like it has an overheating problem or alternatively has a faulty display card. But it could be that the processor has been incorrectly installed, without adequate thermal transfer compound used between chip and heatsink. Impossible to be specific, …

Quite a simple one to avoid. Simply put, Firefox/Mozilla users should not accept update code being installed unless it comes from update.mozilla.org This thing can only get in if you OK the install ;)

I doubt very much that her "graphics card has gone kabluie". I think it's much more likely that she's inadvertantly changed settings and instructed Windows to use a different display adaptor driver. She's most likely changed the setting to 'Standard VGA Adpator'.

Sounds like system corruption which has resulted from infection by a trojan or other 'nasty'. Try following the advice in the stickied topics in our 'Viruses and Nasties' section, and if that doesn't correct the situation try a refresh install of Windows.

Thanks for resurrecting this, cargenius. I missed it earlier, and reading it has given me a good giggle! A better card will produce better sound, of course, but Prologic only …

Depending on climate conditions 24 Celsius is quite believable, especially with a decent heatsink/fan. I've an overclocked 2500+ here that seldom gets above low 30s idle on even hot days ;) Is that 512Mb of RAM 1 module or two? Which memory slot(s) are used?
