i don't think the heatsinc size is the big difference ,a quick look at ASUS and i think the biggest difference is FSB ,amount of ram each will handle and Price ,

the problem may be caused by a differen motherboard ,from the old and the new .when in safe mode go to add and remove program and remove the video /display drive and try rebooting ,if it boots then get correct drivers for video
