remove all addin cards ,if any ,is you video device built into the mothereboard or a addin card ,if addin card remove it and try booting ,see if it shuts down ,,remove all but one ram stick ,if more than one ,bootup and hope like hell it boots .

did you unplug the video card[also make sure if the card has a fan on it ,that the fan is spinning when turned on ] and reinstall it back into it slot on the board ,also do same with the ram chips .and make sure that the cpu fan is clean of dust build up

no possible way for the monitor to have a virus ,thats not to say that it isn't a virus causing the problem

the likely problem is the video device,intergrated or addin device that sends the signal to the monitor.

LouA ,if you bought you laptop less than 2 yrs ago and it had Vista one it was outdated ,win7 was released to manufacturing on July 22, 2009,,that makes your laptop outdated at purchase ,my opininion ,like it not .

Customers who just bout new laptos for christmas that had win7[with win8 laptop on the shelf next to the win7 ] on them bought outdated

and it not microsft fault it didn't find win8 drivers for you printer ,it the maker of the printers fault ,did you check you printer maker websirte for win8 drivers ,wait ,actually the latest printer should have come with win8 driver shouldn't it .
i bought an outdated win Vista laptop once ,thats how i know,thats why i bought it ,price cut !! .been there did that ,i seen almost 100 laptops sold at local store that had win7 on them and they sold because of the price $329.00 to 379.00 ,because there are last years laptops

don't have a cooling fan to suggest ,but i will suggest can of compressed ait ,to keep you cpu cooling fan and heatsinc clear of dust ,doesn't take much dust to cause heat buildup

let me put it this was ,turn on laptop ,charge it fully ,unplug and let it sit running ,no excell or any other programs running ,open task manager ,and sit and watch the proceses and see what ones spike when using cpu

maybe excell is taking the cpu ,what happens in the same 30 minutes doing nuttin,just sitting idel,disable ssleep and hibernate if set ,and just let it sit,not sure what else couldbe causing it to do something as drastic as a full hr,difference

it not likely that programs run sometime nd not other time ,it likely you could be doing different things that use more power ,running videos ,download /or moving files around ,using more cpu/video chip ,thus burning more power .surfing the net some pages load small flash videos ect ect using power

my laptop goes from 100% to 95% when i unplug the cord ,and my battery is getting bad ,cause it only last an hour or so now ,so maybe the battery is getting bad ,not holding a good charge ,
battery consumption in altered by how intense the laptop is used at any giving time .

sometimes i think be watch some things to much ,forget the meter and use the laptop .its 2 yrs old it could be getting bad ,only way to know for sure is keep using it ,till it dies

did it come back right away or after you installed you save personal files fronm the old install .if you did have any ,as the virus could be in the saved files .

yes this can be done ,have i done it ,yes but ,just with windows ,not with the linux thrown into the mix .it means using a different bootloader i think when you use linux ,but if you install it within windows with Vmware iyou would not need the bootloader.
if installing multiple windows versions ,start with the oldest version first .
this what i have now ,win7 +win8 and winxp running in Oracle vm ,and im just a novice when it come to using a VM

I have intsalled the driver, but when I installed the skype it says no sound card found

so you sound works when you use it correct ,its just skype does,t reconize that the device is installed

the new windows install likely didn't install drivers for the sound devive ,so unless you install the correct driver for the sound its no going to work,and like i said in my other post ,Dell computers have a service tag on them go to the link in my other post and put in theservice # and it will take you to the correct driver for the computer

take the harddrive out ,connect to another computer via an external usb device and use a recovery tool as it already been said ,not much chance in getting it back ,i did same thing a few yrs back playing with linux for the first time and not reading enought on the how too's of installing it ,but i didn't own or have any important data on the drive

did you check this acer site and try using the one for win8 32bit as the computer never shipped with a 32bit win7

does you computer have 5.1 sound card/device to play all speakers at once ., what is the make and model# of the computer

weird quest ,but i would guess not as usefull as water ,but check with locals and see if anyone uses redhat on a larg scale and would need trained redhat techs

the tower should have a dell service tag # on it put it in the box in link and download drivers for the motherboard like chipset and video and sound .
if hands on computer repair people cound not fix it then there either don't know what they are doing or the computer broke beyond repair .adding another sound card should have fixed it as long as you installed drive fro the new card

could be just overheating ,try using a can of compressed ait and blowing the dust off the heatsinc and fan

What Anti-virus are you using?

that is a great question me thinks , i would disconnect it from the internet ,disable you active antivirus program ,some antivirs program can get in the way when coping files to dvd ,ect ect ,and try the backup again ,also it could be the dvd media you are using some brands don't perforem as well as otheres

a less than 2 year old computer should have come with win7 ,my opinion is that your compouter was way out dated when you bought ,and its also myopinion that the best way to buy win8 is installed on a new up todate computer/laptop,as i said its my opinion
