windows 8 has built in antivrus program ,"windows defender" ,work and looks just like windows securith essencial, and I have been using win8 for about 3 months now and nothing go in yet .and I download and run a lot of program people who come to this site looking for help have installed , I install them to see if I cand reproduce the problem they get from the software .alls go so far .
as for the start screen I just by-pass it and go right to my desktop .I put a shortcut to windows explorer in startup,to open the startup folder go to RUN and type in , shell:startup .

just an opinion ,stay away from driver finder software,no need to use them ,my opinion !!! ,you usually get more the driver you are looking fo ,

yeah I use to be like that too, now I tackle a few every now and then ,most of the one I take totally apart were broken laptop that people didn't want and gave them to me,so iused them for practise , I use a plastic tray with small compartments ,maked as to what part of the laptop the screw/small part came from ,usuallt works out ox ,the worst theng you can do is brake a plastic part ,ouch!
I always watch on line videos for taking them apart .

open Internet explorer , go to tools ,internet options /advanced and check off ,reset ,and restore advanced settings .this I have seen fix problems similar to yours .

im assuming not supported means it can be done but is not supporte by Microsoft .I have a acer laptop,AMD Turion64 x2, I use for things like this and testing other crap ,I had win7 home priemun 32 bit ,installed and did a upgrade to win7 Ultimit 64 bit about 2 weeks ago now and it still works ,only issue the sound driver will not stay installed ,works but is gone on reboot ,not saying do it ,just saying it worked for me , I used the windows anytime update to do it ,I have a msdn acct so I have keys for all the different versions .

sometime next week im going to try a upgrade to a version of win8 32bit ,just for the heck of it

most maybe even all laptops/netbooks have a button or a key to turn the keypad on and off aybe it got turnrd off . buttons are usually found on the front ,just below the touchpad and the hey is usuall FN+7,that's what it is on my full size acer aspire

if I leave the battery on all the time and keep the laptop plugged in the battery eventually wears out

yes that is normal as a battery needs to be used ans then recharged for best life ,just charging it and leaving it un-use plugged in the laptop it will eventually be of little use, all battery will weventually die no matter whay way you use them as is the case with 9 cell battery from your dell ,same happens to people who have a 2 phone set of portable phones in there home,and only use the one phone with the other plugged in and unused ,battery goes dead and they go to the place they purchased the phone and say BUT I never used it hardly,it shouldn't be dead!

sounds like the problem is it broke when you dropped it,and will need to be replaced
,dropping is not a healthy thing for a laptop,I just recently changed one in a Toshiba laptop ,it was a 15.6 led screen ,customer sat on it and broke the screen ,it cost the customer $120.00 [new led with 3 yr waurrent,$90.69,my cost +30 dollars labour],but that was only because I am cheap,Staples or furture shop ,wanted 250.00 to do it.

no file missing ,the bios clock working is done before any operating system loads .
in the link below you can see the battery in the last picture on the right ,its the gold/yellow coloard cyrcle think on the right of the picture ,it also looks like the laptop has to be taken fully apart to get at it ,it need to be changed or you need to have a good laptop battery in the laptop all the time ,as long as there is power to the laptop the bios clock will keep its time .

hi like tower computer ,laptops have whats called a bios battery in them ,its in under the bottom somewhere ,some are hard to get at some of the newer laptos are easy to get at ,either way it needs to be changed ,
whats the make and model # of the laptop ,maybe we can help point you in the right direction

check the time zone, time and date setting of the computer

I don't know all the tech stuff of batterys ,but I do know that for most of[about 90%] the 3 1/2 yrs my wifes toshiba has been plugged into mains ,and the battery still charges and show full charge ,every now and then it gets use on the battery and last foe about 1to 1 1/2 hrs depending on what you are doing

my opinion is changing the home name will not change the attempt to connect to the work wifi,
I think the work connections is looking for a security key ,if your laptop works like mine ,and I think it does ,when my laptop finds a wifi network to connect to I click the icon to connect ,put it security key if there is one and connect ,matters not what the name of my home connection is or how my home laptop is setup ,I have 3 computer on the same wifi ,all connected at the same time and if I take the laptop away and use it I have no problem connecting to other wifi connection because of my home setup.

at home click the wifi icon by the clock,right click your Linksys connection icon ,go properties ,connection and uncheck connect automatic and the othere that show ,then try connecting at work

no would be the simple answer ,yes would be the answer if you think anythings possible .
you biggest obstacle will be how do you connect it to the computer ,if you happen to be a higly skilled electrical technicion then yeah it could be possible .

I'll say Buy Retail ,I may be wrong but, not sure what difference it would make ,but why buy oem ,oem is a disk used by original eqiptment maunfactor[computer maker ] ,so thye can customize it to add all kinds of junk[trial versions of useless software ] and driver specific to there computer ,
as for changing parts I have done that many time and at best all I had to do was re-activate windows by phoning MS

any freezer suggestion on the net are misleading ,at best you should only ,do it to a harddrive or laptop battery , the harddrive ,would be to try to get it to boot long enough to get some files of it before you ditch it .
the battery one is just to see iy one can get it to start recharging ,I tried bot multiple time for differen drive and baterys ove the years and never had good results .so I don't do it anymore

hi, it could be just dirty keyboard ,but does sound more like a bad one , just removing the ribbon cable connection and plugging it back into the motherboard might help ,replacing the keyboard would be the easiest fix,
