As a result of a recent upgrade exercise I've managed to snap off the 4 pin power connector on the back of my X-Fi Elite Pro Sound card - thus rendering it useless.

I'm just wondering if its worth repairing or should I just junk it? My new mobo (XFX nForce 790i Ultra) has on-board audio which doesn't seem too bad, but its still not going to be as good as the Creative was.

hard to say if it worth fixing with out knowing how much its worth and how much someone is going to charge you for fixing it

the bootable linux disk was a good check of cpu , I assume you got some power if the cdrom drive works

hi ,first thing is to acquire a replacement drive ,then you need to carefully remove the keyboard ,and at the back of the cdrom its screws to the motherboard ,remove the 2 screws and slide out cdrom .I actually have 2 of those laptops with cdrom problems ,i bought replacement drive on E-Bay for $45.00 canadian .

As far as it only registering the 960 instead of a full gig is quite common. Sharing ram with a video card, etc. will show a smaller amount of "ready" ram. Don't worry about that, it is normal-but I am not quite sure why it will not allow you to use 2-1gig cards...Are they DDr? and if they are are they 1,2, or 3? Let us know how it goes!

that is true, for sure ,but the way i read it he had the 512 & the 1 gig in when it says 960 ,i think 552 is a bit much for shared video .
can see the bios being set to that giving that he only had 512 meg in to begin with .I have see where one chip would cancel out the other ,because they didn't match ,but usually the other way round to his problem

all you can do is just make sure that you are pushing the ram in correctly

right click on the desktop go to properties /appearance /advance /color 1/other ,drag you mouse around the colored box and when you get a color you like save to custom colors and use it a desktop color . hope this is what you mean ,as it was a bit of a vague ?

yeah it boots fine wit the 512, i managed to boot it with the 512 and one 1gig stick but it will only recognise 960mb but with the two 1gig sticks all i get is a prolonged beep.

what happens with just one of the 1 gig stick in,also try switching the 512 and the 1 gig around

yes it does,but xp does not ! so only option it to use 3rd party partition tool or created multiple partitions when installing win xp

ok, board only takes up to 2gig of ram so the 2x1 gig should work ,did you try it with just one of t he 1 gig sticks in ,also will it still boot with the 512 .

I think spybot has some new features that should not be install when install spybot ,i usually just install to remove/clean computer,then uninstall it

its an integrated grpahics card. I have no spare parts to try so I 'm stick at the moment. All I can try is re-installing the OS but it freezes part way through.

you must have a couple of computer repair places around you neighborhood ,that would have a old pci video card to sell for a few bucks,so you could try it

really ,good to know ,didn't know you could find out motherboard and ram brand name and version in the bios ,just check my Dell and it showed noting of the sort,what section should i look in

the program linked in my above post doesn't install it runs from the .exe . if your computer is not working you will need to open the box.

I was wondering if anyone here have seen similar symptoms. First of all the PSU turns on as soon as I flip the switch on the back of the PSU, previously I had to press the power button on the front of the case to turn it on. I cannot turn the PSU off using this front power button either, even if I keep it pressed for a long time.

first thing that comes to mind is the setting in power options so right click on you desktop go to properties /screen saver ,power /advanced/ make sure its set to shut down, for when i press the front panel button.

But i can't get to the restore it just goes into setup (F1) and will not go into Restore??

to enter the bios ,it should either be f2 or del key ,pretty sure its f2 with the hp

I do have one more question. This laptop is not "ethernet" ready. The only internet plug-in is a regular phone line. I don't know how to tell if it's "wireless" ready ? How do I get it "wireless" or "ethernet" ready, without spending alot ?

hi guys, I'm having problems trying to upgrade ram, the pc is currently 512mb and i'm trying to put in 2gb, the pc is able to take it, i checked before i bought the ram, i have tried a single 2gb stick and two 1gb sticks but it just wont boot, my os is win xp and the ram spec is pc 4200, 533mhz ddr2, the same as the single 512mb thats installed.
Can anyone help me please??? is there any settings i can change or am i just over looking something simple???

wel lyou said you tried loading with the winxp cd ,that is concidered a bootdisk ,boot to winxp cd and chose R for repair , 1 for you c:\ and enter when asks for password ,if it still looks for password then enter one if you did create one ,if not it should go to a prompt ,atthe prompt type in this without the quotes "chkdsk /f"

I am trying to find a good ram boosting programme (Ram defragmenter) that will work with XP and 3Gbt Ram. Previously when I had 2Gbt Ram I used FreeMem Pro 5 and was very happy with it. Unfortunately FreeMem does not work with 3Gbt Ram so I had to uninstall it.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Welll.... Either way, I had no discs to use to restore the system that I had, and I had to put the Pro system on, and that still leaves me needing a validation key to make the system I now have legal, and I'm just trying to figure out the cheapest way to do that :)

don't buy from e-bay ,go to computer store and buy a legal copy .only way ,but if you have the key for your home edition ,just borrow a xp home disk from a friend and use it to load windows and use your home key ,you say it was a legal install ,so you must have had a key for it .they is no way to make your friends copy of xp pro legal ,unless you call Microsoft and buy a new key .

shut down computer ,open the box ,using either the bios reset jumper or just remove the battery for awhile will reset the bios to defaults ,and hdd is usually first before the cdrom

I had XP Home on my system, which met with an untimely demise.

this info is incorrect, as a operating system can't meet a timely demise ,The cd maybe,but not the OS, all you need is a winxp home cd to load windows and use the key you have to activated it .

SHADOWTALOS Have you solved your startup problem? I have the same or at least similiar issue. On startup the power supply light is steady green, the 3 lights on the keyboard flash once, the CD/DVD drive lights sequence and then go out, the fans run, the hard drive light is on steady (does not flash or flicker) and all stops there. Nothing on screen, no light in mouse, no boot.

If you solve your issues you may solve mine.

open the box,unplug power from the harddrive and cdrom and remove any pci add in cards and see if it will boot ,if it boots ,then replace items removed one at a time to see what one is causing the problem
