you need to remove the harddrive and use a external device to hook it to another computer i fit will not boot to safe mode[hitting f8 on bootup]

my opinion ,then answer is no,and yes you leave the battery in the laptop when plugged into power . when new you should charge battery /unplug,use till battery dies,regharge/kill maybe 3 times .then just use and charge as needed
