So your laptop is not starting at all and you can't see a thing. Try clearing the heatsink, make sure there is no dust to rule out an overheating issue. Can you try reseating the graphic card.

For software, try not to use Peer 2 Peer softwares and download files from unsecure websites. Have firewall turn on and your antivirus working. If all goes well, your laptop can survived for a long time:)

You are right about the Motherboard being from an E-Machine. If you have spare HDD, put in some data into it ( Not important ) and try it with the Imperial motherboard. Use the emachine cd and try reinstalling the HDD and see if that works.

Also check your Antivirus software or other security tools. They may be scanning GTA as you play so it may cause the game to be slow. If your AV is scanning the game, list GTA IV as a trusted application so it won't be scan.
