Can you login via safe mode? I forgot what command it is... do a search on the forums. But there is some F key you can press when Windows starts to load and it will load in safe mode. So the Compaq screen comes on and just never goes away?

First step is to right click on My Computer on your desktop and then click on Properties. It should tell the Mhz/Ghz of your machine in addition to how much RAM you have.

Sorry, I have no experience at all with that. :( I don't even know what a debugger is. Have you checked the Microsoft Knowledge Base by any chance?

Did anything funky happen during the installation? (freezing, etc.) It's often suggested to disable antivirus software while installing something. Also, make sure you're using the latest version of your video card drivers and of DirectX. If none of that works, disable antivirus software, uninstall the game and then reinstall.

What I would do is download and install the free Win XP powertoy called TweakUI from the Microsoft website. It comes with a utility to fix incorrectly associated/missing icons for windows apps.

That will happen when there's a script error (i.e. a JavaScript error) on the page you're trying to view. The reason you got that here at TechTalk is because the company that serves our ads was experiencing temporary downtime, and the script was complaining because it was getting a 404 …

If you don't remember/know the password, you should be able to reset it by opening up the computer and toggling a jumper on the motherboard. Check out the specs of your mobo. Else, if you know the password, go into CMOS Setup by hitting Delete, Esc, F2, F7, or some …

I have a G5 with two 250 gig serial ATA drives. I want to use OS X's built-in Raid support to stripe the drives. Is the performance increase only marginal? not even noticable? Note the drives are serial ATA ... not SCSI.

Does anyone know of a robust samba browser that will let me browse my Windows shares on 10.3? Finder is too quirky for me - especially in Panther.

Norton AntiVirus is a great piece of software. However, I've had a LOT of problems with other programs included with Norton Internet Security - most importantly with Norton Personal Firewall.

Hardware-wise: RAM is the most important plus, it's the simplest upgrade you can perform that in some cases is just as good as a processor upgrade Software-wise: Disk defragmenter Use programs such as TweakXP or registry hacks to speed up the NTFS file system

This may also be a video card problem. Definitely check to make sure your RAM is all snug in the motherboard, as well.

I've never heard of this virus/trojan, but it's advised to also search through the registry to find any references to it.

I've never heard of this before. Windows 98 I take it? Win 9x is a 32-bit OS which, I believe, can handle 16-bit emulation to run old DOS programs.

What version did you upgrade from? 10.2.6? Or something lower ... ?? Basically it's telling you that it can't start the bash (I think sh is bash?) shell. Have you tried going into the Disk Utility and correcting permissions for your system partition?

What's the difference between emacs with GTK support and xemacs? I understand they are both branches from the ol' console text editor. Which one would have better support for programming in C++, for example? (i.e. syntax color highlighting, auto indent)

My personal experience is that Norton is flaky even when disabled. In all seriousness, I have disabled Norton Internet Security / Norton Personal Firewall and it has still blocked stuff ... until I removed it from loading in the registry altogether. I haven't used the proggie since. :(

Well, you could have a regular ol' function named template. i.e. int template(char letter) or void template() or any other combination you could have for a function. There's also a C++ thingie called templates, where you would do something such as Template<T> or something along those lines. (I've never learned/used …

AMD Athlon XP's run at a slower clockrate than their model number suggests - rather, it's meant to be a comparason to Intel's processors. In any case, if you have a 2200+ then it should run at 1.8ghz, and it's perfectly fine for your computer properties to read 1.79ghz. However, …
