Hardware-wise: RAM is the most important plus, it's the simplest upgrade you can perform that in some cases is just as good as a processor upgrade Software-wise: Disk defragmenter Use programs such as TweakXP or registry hacks to speed up the NTFS file system

Inside Internet Explorer, click on the Tools menu. Then click Internet Options. Under the General tab, where it shows Temporary Internet Files, click the button to delete the files.

This may also be a video card problem. Definitely check to make sure your RAM is all snug in the motherboard, as well.

I've never heard of this virus/trojan, but it's advised to also search through the registry to find any references to it.

I've never heard of this before. Windows 98 I take it? Win 9x is a 32-bit OS which, I believe, can handle 16-bit emulation to run old DOS programs.

What version did you upgrade from? 10.2.6? Or something lower ... ?? Basically it's telling you that it can't start the bash (I think sh is bash?) shell. Have you tried going into the Disk Utility and correcting permissions for your system partition?

Considering the Internet and e-mail work, that means that your wireless connection is, indeed, working. What you need to do now is set up file sharing. To do this, you will need to know a few things about the network? Is it part of a domain? What is the name …

This is driving me just crazy! I have Adobe Acrobat Reader 5 installed and it works fine. However, whenever I open up a *.pdf file, it defaults to opening up in Apple's "Preview" application. Where could I change this setting?

I'd like to apologize for the site being down the last hour to two today. There were some server difficulties. My web host needed to restart the server twice. I'm still investigating what is going wrong. - Dani

If you're dual botting, you have to install the operating systems in order of their age. For example, the first step is to partition your hard drive. Then install Windows Me on one partition. Then install Windows XP on a second partition as normal. Doing this should automatically set up …

What's the difference between emacs with GTK support and xemacs? I understand they are both branches from the ol' console text editor. Which one would have better support for programming in C++, for example? (i.e. syntax color highlighting, auto indent)

My personal experience is that Norton is flaky even when disabled. In all seriousness, I have disabled Norton Internet Security / Norton Personal Firewall and it has still blocked stuff ... until I removed it from loading in the registry altogether. I haven't used the proggie since. :(

I might've missed it, gymbo, but what video card are you using? Ahh, nevermind, an Nvidida Geforce 4 Ti? Are you using the absolute latest drivers? They're not called Detonators anymore - I forget what they're called now, the 5x.xx series.

Well, you could have a regular ol' function named template. i.e. int template(char letter) or void template() or any other combination you could have for a function. There's also a C++ thingie called templates, where you would do something such as Template<T> or something along those lines. (I've never learned/used …

AMD Athlon XP's run at a slower clockrate than their model number suggests - rather, it's meant to be a comparason to Intel's processors. In any case, if you have a 2200+ then it should run at 1.8ghz, and it's perfectly fine for your computer properties to read 1.79ghz. However, …

I think you mean 3.06 ghz, not 3.6 ghz. The fastest processor Intel currently makes is 3.2 ghz. Of course, the Intel Pentium 4 processor is a 32-bit processor just like just every processor up until now. Apple just released the first 64-bit personal computer a few months ago - …

The Google toolbar for IE has a really good built-in popup blocker. That's what I use. Other web browsers (i.e. Mozilla) include popup blockers as well, I believe. Adaware seems to be the program everyone uses to catch spyware. I never tried it myself.

You say that it gives this problem under multiple environments? What do you mean by that? Has the system ever ran Linux? Win2000, WinXP, etc etc? A lot of times problems with random restarts are either related to bad memory (RAM) or the video card drivers. (I've experienced this due …

I would say that the difference is definitely worth it. It's automatically detected provided your motherboard supports that size. For example, most older motherboards don't support drives over 80gigs - and some do only wirth a firmware upgrade. Also, make sure you set the drive's jumper settings according to the manual.

Are you behind a proxy server (i.e. at work/school)? Are you using a 3rd-party firewall program? (What about Windows XP's built-in firewall, if you're using WinXP?) Aside from Outlook, are there any other Internet programs you have installed that work/don't work? (i.e. AIM, ICQ, etc?)
