Best guide to be found, that one!

Everest Home Edition is an excellent reporting tool. It can be particularly useful to generate reports which will provide information necessary to people trying to assist you with problems, or to inform yourself in your troubleshooting procedures.

Please refrain, however, from simply generating reports and posting them here simply for the sake of doing so. Full reports are rather sizeable, and they also contain sensitive information such as your CD key codes and the like. Be cautious with the information you provide publically. Review reports before you post them, no matter what utility you use to generate them, and remove personally identifiable or sensitive data first.

Changing the motherboard would be my preference also. Good motherboards to suit the 2.8GHz Pentium 'C' processor are quite inexpensive, and that processor you have is quite a good one as well.

There's only one small problem, though. Your RAM would need to be 400MHz PC3200 or better, and I bet it's not!

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Windows Update is not the best source for hardware drivers. The hardware manufacturer is always the best source. Is your PC a brand name one? If so, what make and model please?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

That processor is a mismatch for your motherboard, I'm sorry to say. If you can change the processor front side bus setting to 133MHz in BIOS you will get a bit better from it, but not the full speed. If the system still boots when you effect the change, you'd get 1862MHz instead of 1400MHz.

You're basically confronted with two choices:

* Sell that processor and replace it with one which uses a 533MHz front side bus
* Replace the motherboard with one which can use an 800MHz front side bus processor.

Here's some from another forum, where we started an 'Incompetent Teen's Cookbook' for Gamers!

SUSHI!

Basic Sushi Recipe Ingredients:

Bamboo mat (maki-su) - to make sushi rolls
Rice Paddle or large flat plastic spoon

*

3 1/3 cups of uncooked rice - use only a high quality medium grain white calrose rice (ie: Nishiki or Kohaku)
*

4 cups of water
*

5 Tbs. + 1 tsp. of rice vinegar (or white vinegar will also work)
*

5 Tbs. of sugar
*

1 tsp. of salt
*

1 package of sushi nori
*

soy sauce & wasabi

Sushi roll filling ingredients:

*

1 cucumber (peeled, seeded and sliced into strips)
*

2 TBS of thin sliced red ginger in red brine liquid (sold in jars, pre-sliced, in the refrigerated section)
*

1 pkg. of gobo tempura - Yamasa fried fish cake w/burdock (refrigerated section - there are many varieties)
*

1 pkg. of kampyo (dried gourd)
*

1 small pkg. of takuan (pickled radish - bright yellow in color, refridg. section)
*

2 eggs cooked to thin omelet style

The flavor of sushi rice varies somewhat with the seasons. In summer a little more vinegar is used. Adjust the flavor of the rice and sugar amount as you like.

Cook rice (I use a rice maker, because it comes out perfect every time)
If you don't have a rice maker try this or follow directions on …

That a single module of RAM, or two? If it's two, are they identical?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Hi PaddyRamsey.

Have you got a manufacturer and model number for the motherboard in that system?

If you don't know what it is, please download and install 'Everest Home Edition' which is linked in the 'Sticky' at top of page, and use it to find out what the motherboard is please. then let us know.

The processor might be misconfigured, or else the motherboard may not be recognizing it correctly for some reason.

OK, Right-click 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'. In 'Device manager, find the entry for the monitor, right-click it and choose 'Uninstall' or 'Remove' or whatever the option is.

Then reboot, and see if the monitor is detected correctly. As it's currently set the way it is, you're unable to use display resolutions that are not appropriate to such a device.

Any one considering an In place upgrade (Refresh install) should also consider two things:

* You'll probably have to reinstall Updates afterwards and...
* You need to disable File Encryption first if it's turned on. Losing all your data files is a big piss-off!

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Woulda been best to do an 'In place upgrade' if you wanted to leave programs and files in place.

I'm afraid that this little excerpt from the Forum rules has to come into play:

do not post anything warez relaetd or related to other illegal acts. This includes tech support troubleshooting pirated software or P2P programs (i.e. Gnutella, Kazaa) used to obtain pirated software.

You'll need to obtain assistance from the Bittorrent website, I'm afraid.

If all other components in your PC are up to the game requirement, then yes it will.

An 1100 MHz processor is more than the 800 MHz stated in the game requirements.

Let's just be sure what it is you're doing first, shall we? Make sure you're doing it this way.

Shut down all programs, or use the 'Show Desktop' icon in the 'Quick Launch' area of the Toolbar.

Right-click on an empty spot on your Desktop display and choose 'Properties' from the pop-up menu.

Click on the 'Settings' tab and try to move the slider to change the desktop resolution.

Is that what you're doing and does it work? If not, on the Settings Tab you should have an image of a computer monitor with details printed underneath indicating type of monitor and display card. what does it say?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Windows updates installed? A standard Windows XP installation can have issues with some USB setups.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

The utility linked in the article mentioned is one of the best I've yet come across for reporting hardware information. Using DXDiag pales in comparison. In fact, just about any Windows 'feature' that reports on your system could be considered as 'inadequate'.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

hmmmmm.......

Quite an old question, but worth resurrecting nevertheless. It deserves a decent answer.

Try "Why won't XP keep time properly?"

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

That doesn't sound right to me, where did you get that information? You should be able to add RAM without affecting setup.

112Mb is simply a 128Mb module with 16Mb used for onboard graphics. Adding more RAM will NOT mean you can't reinstall the system, the reinstall will work perfectly. 128Mb is not enough to run Windows XP efficiently, and you should definitely add more.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

OK, an update. I've done some thorough research on your particulat laptop and Toshiba definitely do NOT list instructions for performing a Refresh install (or 'In-place upgrade') of Windows XP. They list instructions for restoring the drive image to its original factory state, but that will destroy all data on the drive, including installed programs and data files.

See this article about it.

In fact, the only way to refresh your Windows installation might be to purchase a retail copy of Windows XP and do the refresh from the Windows CD.

That's a pretty drastic step to take of course, but so is the prospect of losing all your programs and data.

Before you go to that extent you might want to have a serious attempt at rescuing your laptop from the infestation(s) that is (are) causing your problems. Use your antivurus program to thoroughly scan your system from 'Safe Mode' and clean any virus infestation that it finds. Then follow the relevent procedures from the article "Boot, dammit, boot!" to see if you can get it back to an operating state. That article's been put together for situations such as yours, and contains a lot of useful information.

Finally, contact Toshiba's support team to see if there's an easier way to do a Refresh install than by purchasing another copy of Windows XP.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Can you boot into 'Safe Mode'?

Reboot, and before you reach the Windows Logo Screen prior to the system starting Windows, press the <F8> key repeatedly. You should get a menu of boot choices, and one of them will be 'Safe Mode'.

Try a few times if it doesn't work the first time. You need to get the timing right.

I'll research the laptop tomorrow. It's very late here. I'll see if there's a reported procedure for performing a Refresh install of Windows in case you need to do so.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

That keyboard got special keys and proprietary software loaded for it? If so, try uninstalling the software, rebooting and letting the keyboard be detected and used as a standard keyboard. see if that disappears the problem. If so, try reinstalling the software to see if the problem returns. Could be just a bit of corruption with the keyboard driver.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Not sure which version of Office you have, but if you checkk in Tools -> Customize you should have the capability to ensure the Send/Recieve button appears on the Toolbar from there.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

It sounds rather wierd that the processor isn't being correctly identified. I suspect that you may not have the correct motherboard chipset and other device drivers installed as well.

I couldn't find any downloads available for your laptop on Viglen's website:

http://www.viglen.co.uk/devportal/std/storefront/storefront.asp?GUID=19402432377

So it might be a good idea to contact them and ask for a link to where suitable device drivers can be downloaded.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

It's gotta be a 128Mb module, with 16Mb used for onboard video ;)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I'd suspect you have neglected to install the motherboard chipset drivers.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

No can do. The 'Administrator' account is a system one, and you need to have a user account to access the system. If it boots straight to Desktop you're fine. XP isn't designed to boot straight to the 'Administrator' account.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Make sure that you have 'Search' set to check the entire drive, and not just 'My Documents'

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Free of virus and malware?

Perhaps a refresh install of Windows?

Perhaps a RAM mismatch or failing RAM module?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

You have a seriously borked Windows installation.

mp10setup.exe is the installation file for Media Player 10. You've obviously got a botched install of that, and it's affecting a lot of other Windows functions as well. You need to either perform a refresh install, or even better wipe the drive and start again.

Your problems obviously stem from the problems which arise from running Windows without installing security updates, and the intrusions and system corruption that are inevitable under such circumstances. If you are reluctant to install updates because you mistrust Microsoft, then you are your own worst enemy.

If you are reluctant to install them, on the other hand, because your Windows installation is not a legitimate one, then you have two choices:

* spend some money on a legitimate copy
* learn to be a competent rogue rather than an incompetent one ;)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Got to Start -> Programs and Right-click on 'Startup". Choose Open.

If you see a media file of some sort in the folder, remove it.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Most problems of this nature result from conflicts between installed software programs. For a fuller discussion, see my article "What's using my burner?" and the related linked articles as well.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

If you have more than one RAM module installed, and they are not of the same make and model, try removing all but one module (use it in Slot 1) and see if your system will run without hanging or restarting. Mismatched memory modules are the most likely cause.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Here's how to do a refresh install of Windows XP:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341&Product=winxp

If you need to make the system boot from CD, go into BIOS Setup when you first power up the PC, find the entries for Boot order and ensure that '1st boot device' is set to 'CD-ROM' and 'Second Boot Device' is set to 'HDD0'

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

The major problems that need to be fixed are really on your PC, not in the Service Pack.

Make sure your PC is completely free of virusses and spyware before installing SP2. Remove or disable any of the silly proprietary 'reporting' tools that Dell, HP and the like install on your system, or at least check their website for updated versions. Those things are often 'badly behaved software', and have caused problems with SP2.

Ideally, installing the Service Pack is the best time to back up your data, format and install fresh. As SP2 replaces almost all the files which make up Windows, it should really be treated as an OS replacement rather than as a petty update.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

There's better than that available, ReDuX, but let's not have links on this forum to items which are of questionable legality please.

Use Google to search for a suitable program if anyone insists on using one. I've given the correct name they are generally known by, and that should be enough, I feel!

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

It sounds like you'vre done a clean install. If it was an 'over the top' install the installed programs would still be there!

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Not sure why it isn't showing up in 'My Computer'. Perhaps you need to install Windows Updates? There are some that relate to USB. Updating the motherboard chipset drivers wouldn't go astray either.

But if the thing shows up in Windows Explorer, you can do the job from there. Ensure that the Folder list is on view at left, expand the entry for 'My Computer', and if you see the flash disk there, right-click on its entry and choose 'Properties'. On the 'Tools' tab you'll find the functions you want to run.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

What you refer to is a Console EMULATOR.

It's a software program you install and run on your PC that simulates a console. As far as I know there are a couple of functional emulators for Xbox.

So far as I know they're no more legal than 'Mod chips', and you should NEVER use one to run games that you don't actually legitimately own a license to.

I'm moving this to the 'Windows Software' section.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Have you tried uninstalling the thing, rebooting and then reinstalling it?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Have there been any signs of abnormal behaviour prior to this happening? Freezes or restarts? Startup or shutdown problems? Slow operation?

It sounds like you have a hardware malfunction of some sort, and perhaps you should drop it in to a repairman if you're not comfortable with delving into its 'innards'.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Back to basics.

Remove or disconnect everything except:

Processor and heatsink/fan
1 RAM module
Display card (and the monitor of course :D)

Get the system completing POST with just that, and then connect up other components one by one, checking to see that it still completes POST.

Connect up the hard drive last if Windows is already installed on it.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I'm not personally much of a 'fan' of DFI motherboards. I think their quality control procedures and general build quality are much lower than that of a manufacturer such as Gigabyte.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

The switch itself is a little unit that clicks into place from behind the front cover. the Button only pushes down onto it. The switch unit has probably come adrift, or the little plastic lugs holding it in place are worn or broken. Take it to a repairman and see if they can 'butcher' something up to hold it in place properly or even glue it in place. At the very least they should be able to replace the switch unit if it really is faulty.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Sure the lens is clean?
