This sounds like a problem with a loose or bad connection. Check the monitor cable to be sure it's tightly connected. Look for bent or damaged pins.

The main advantage of a laptop is portability. A minor advantage is the smaller footprint. You'll usually get more computer for your dollars with a desktop, and they are much easier/cheaper to repair and/or upgrade. It sounds as though you could get some use out of a basic laptop, so …

Yes, it's possible. What are you trying to accomplish? Describe the equipment. In general, you want to attach one router to the modem, then the second router to the first. The second router will need a fixed IP address and have DHCP disabled.

This seems to be a file for ISA ports, which you almost certainly don't have. In Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services, set this service to "Disabled" and see if the problem goes away.

In device manager, rt-click, select "Disable". Rt-click "Enable" to activate. I haven't done it, but I think you can also set up a Hardware Profile to accomplish this.

You have to take ownership of the files: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421 This would be even easier if you just networked the PCs.

Gateway computers usually have a sticker with the Product key listed on it. A reinstall sounds like the easiest fix.

XP does not detect SATA discs. If that's what you have, you'll need to install the SATA drivers with a floppy, and I suspect you don't have one. So: What's the make and model of the laptop? You may be able to slipstream an XP disk with the needed drivers.

Don't pay any attention to selfhelpbooks. He's "In training" for a reason. Could be several problems. Do you have AV and anti-spy-ware installed? Is Win2K up to date? Try defrag and chkdsk and look in Event viewer for errors in System Or Application.

This is a DSL modem, so you need to set up a DSL connection on the router. The manual or CD will help you with this, but I'd suggest you start by re-setting the router to defaults first.

You could do that, but I think of my external drive as a backup. No file is safe on a hard drive, so two copies is better than one. You're not really safe until you have a CD/DVD backup, and even that can be iffy.

"Setup Service Pack 1 of Vista and update your router's firmware." Sounds like good advice. Go to your router manufacturer's site and look for a firmware update. This usually explained somewhere on the site. Basically, you just download a small file and run a program from the router web page …

Norton is a huge resource hog. I wouldn't hesitate to get rid of it (All of it) and install AVG or AVAST. I'm a Windows Defender fan also. You can Dump "GWcares", Remind XP, The Adobe stuff and msmgs. Big fix sounds like BS.

USB ports don't show in My Computer unless something is attached, so I'm guessing you have a card reader. In Tweakui, look under My Computer/Drives and make sure additional drive letters are not hidden (They must be checked).

I use Windows Defender and have never had a problem. Your surfing habits determine your need for this kind of protection. Porn, gaming, P2P and Torrents seem to generate the most Spyware.

Chances are that your wireless settings have changed. If there's a router involved, you need to enter the router setup and get your wireless settings and enter them into the laptop. It might be easiest to set the router to defaults and start over.

This looks like a hardware problem. I'd start by re-seating everything in the machine-memory, cards, cables, etc. Blow out the dust/dirt. You really need that CD to work to get anywhere, so you might consider a new drive, possibly a new power supply.

Is this XP? To adjust Virtual Memory: Rt. Click My Computer/Properties/Advanced/Performance/SettingsAdvanced/Virtual Memory Try twice your RAM If you really have 248 MB of RAM, (Probably 256 MB with 8MB used for video RAM) you would benefit greatly from installing more.

The power connector shouldn't matter. Are you saying that the SATA options in Figure 3 /Advanced don't show in your BIOS? Some SATA mobo connectors are known for failing-try another connector or another cable.
