Re: How have you set-up the wireless configuration? M.
Re: I'm wondering if this could be an MTU problem, as I remember reading something like happening before. So I've Googled and came across this interesting post on another site (with apologies to those who may recognise as their own posting, but we've got try and help the original poster haven't …

Re:
How easy is it to get its components? (I`m from South Africa) Do you know how their service are?
I do believe Dell have very decent South African support. In fact, I think their overall African presence is pretty good. I remember writing a proposal for a Ghanian re-insurance company …
Re: I tend to use a combination of Spam Assassin at the server level, the default Outlook 2003 junk mail filters to catch anything that Spam Assassin may miss (which it has done, and Outlook has been superb at picking it up and sticking it in the Junk Folder) and a …
Re: Even if you invest it a Core 2 Duo now, it certainly won't be obsolete when the quad-core stuff comes out. My theory is that they're going to be aiming at power users initially and then _slowly_ roll out different models/specifications across the board. Intel aren't stupid, and very much …
Re: VMware are just bitter because it's Microsoft. I wonder what they would have said if, say, Google had bought Xen? M.
Re: I can perhaps see WHY they're doing this - to stop people running up massive gambling debts - but it's a step in the wrong direction and implies that the US is becoming a Nanny state (okay, 50 of them, then). M.
Re: Perhaps another thing you could try, if your router supports it, is uPnP. This makes it much easier for an application to "punch" the appropriate ports in the firewall automatically for you for a particular application. You'll need to look in your router's manual whether or not it's supported.. M.
Re: Post what version of Samba you're using and the config file if possible. Regards, Martyn
Re: Dual monitors are very useful for digital video editing - we have a few set-ups around here that are used precisely for that purpose. All NVidia Quadras or Geforce FXes. Twinned with Sony high-resolution 24" widescreen Trinitron monitors. Lovely jubbly. Regards, Martyn
Re: Well, I for one would be interested. I work in Soho (NO, NO, NO - not THAT kind of work - I'm in the post-production business) so anywhere near there or Central London would be ideal for me. M.
Re: Or.. you can get a Nigerian 419 scammer to carve you one: http://forum.419eater.com/john_boko.htm Sadly you can't play any games on it, but it'll make a lovely addition to any home.. M.
Re: A shame this couldn't have happened at the beginning of December last year - I was in New York attending the KongIsKing meet-up and the world premiere of King Kong itself... sadly all my spondoolicks for another overseas gathering has dried up for a long, long time :( M.
Re: As a tip: I find that when working as a normal user and then have to run a series of priviledged commands, I do:
su -
which means that when you become root you'll inherit the root environment (including all environment variables such as the path, and so …
I'd be interested to hear what people's current (or all time) favourite movies are! Despite working for a film VFX company, my top favourite films feature absolutely no special effects at all! Just goes to show all that fancy stuff isn't needed when it comes to telling a goo story! …
Re: The term flipping 'eck springs to mind. Just to be nominated in the top three is an honour upon itself. My thanks to all, and to my fellow combatants^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H bloggers, good luck :) M.
Re: Well, if there were a prize for completely strange posts, I'd certainly give it to ninnay ;) M.
Re: And try to talk to existing customers of the hosts you're eyeing up. Visit the hosts' customer forums if they have any and judge for yourself whether or not they're doing a good job. It pays to do research - as is mentioned in the above article. Regards, Martyn
I'm not quite sure how the Featured Blog thingy works, but I created a blog this morning about Universal's movie download service and noticed that PHP/vBulletin/something munged the apostrophes in the title when the blog suddenly appeared in the Featured Blog section. I went back to correct it (and add …
Re: Unfortunately I don't know what the general availability of visual effects and post-production houses are like in India, but certainly over here in the UK we have university courses that specialise in graphics and animation, but we also have special schools specifically for visual effects training. Another way people learn …
Re: Several thoughts: 1) What version of OS X are you running? Regardless of whether it's Panther, Tiger, etc. have you kept up to date with all the online updates? 2) Could it be a possible motherboard problem? I also assume you've tried resetting the PMU at least once? M.
Re: Several things to check: 1) Some monitors have multiple inputs (usually VGA and DVI connectors) and have a switch to change between them. This can either by a physical switch or alternatively you've got to select the right input through a menu on the monitor. 2) If the monitor is …
Re: As far as I'm aware (and I may be wrong about this - so anybody please feel to step in and give me a slap), dual-layer writing is NOT supported by Panther. You would need to upgrade to Tiger for that. M.
Re: See here (about two thirds of the way down the page - resetting the administrator's password) http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106156 Regards, Martyn
Re: Definately worth doing. I'd also go as far as recommending buying the MPEG-2 component to play MPEG-2 files from within Quicktime. Yes, you could very well use DVD Player for that, but for the purposes of what I use Quicktime for, it saves having to keep faffing around with different …
Re: How recent is the recent? I remember when using my work MacBook Pro that I had to apply a firmware upgrade before using BootCamp - but more recent models may have already had the firmware applied. You will also need 10.4.6 to be able to use Boot Camp. M.
Re: What I've done with my site (The Friends of English Magic - about Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, the novel by Susanna Clarke - just in case anybody gets the wrong ideas about it being about English illusionists ;)) is to create a newsletter which I hope will be the …

Re: Besides which, if people tried to rip Dani off, they'll have us lot to come after them! With flaming torches and everything! ;) But seriously, I do understand the concerns. I had an incident in which a former employer (who is a national ISP) took a photograph from my online …
Re: CentOS is a decent distribution. It should be noted that you should be using the ia32e (EMT64) kernel rather than the x86_64 kernel if you're going down the CentOS 3.x route. I'm not too sure about Centos 4, though. M.
Re: I also recommend Outback Plus or Eazy Backup from http://www.ajsystems.com. Both products do a thorough job of backing up your important Outlook, Internet Explorer and other important data files. Reasonable pricing too, I think. Regards, Martyn
Re: Well, Dells are very nice, but I much prefer the power of the Opteron. The problem is that there are still too few dedicated server providers that supply them. The next desktop machine will be a dual core Athlon64 x2 too. ;) M.
Re: I thought the keynote presentation was very interesting. The fact that as Steve Jobs was demonstrating various components of the Dashboard and the new iTunes it turns out that he was using a Pentium 4 3.6Ghz box all along. I think I will consider buying an Intel Mac when they're …
Re: What exactly are the permissions on that directory? If it's a UNIX box of some description you should be able to see what permissions (they'll look a bit like this: -rw-r----) you have in your FTP client (or Dreamweaver, but I've not used Dreamweaver's upload tool for so long...). Failing …
Re: For people to access your Teamspeak server from the Internet, you'll need to open up the appropriate ports and do port forwarding. Do you have a firewall on the PC that's attached to the ADSL modem? Does it do port forwarding? M.

Re: How long is a piece of string? But seriously, what kind of applications are you likely to be developing for this server? What sort of demand can you see it having? As you've said you'll be developing SQL-related stuff will you be using MSSQL on the same server, the desktop …
Re: Are you sure that the wireless device is definately getting 127.0.0.1 from the DHCP server? Is the device definately set-up to obtain IP address automatically within it's network settings? What happens if you manually assign an IP address (with relevent netmask and gateway) on the wireless device? I'd suggest first …
Re: PHP as CGI is not as efficient when running - but there are some good reasons for doing it that way (see http://www.fastcgi.com/devkit/doc/fastcgi-whitepaper/fastcgi.htm which probably gives the best answers to that I could find, and besides which I've been using FastCGI and PHP with Zeus for a year or so …
Re: 64-bit computing is only really going to be good when users are going to start needing anything more than 4Gb RAM -(such as Half Life 3 which is due in 2832 - tee hee). Regards, Martyn

Re: Do you intend to write an ASP/ASP.NET scripts? You'll need IIS if that's the case. If not, you could go for Apache. I've found IIS easy to set-up, but then again I also found Apache to be equally easy despite being entirely text-config based. I've also had eight years experience …
Re: I'd imagine that you have your DNS settings in your OS to obtain IP and DNS servers automatically. One thing to check - what's the DNS settings on the router set to? I've found that sometimes you need to explicity set the DNS servers for your ISP within the router …
Re: Check the cable connections between the computer and monitor - swap out if necessaary - and see if that improves matters. M.

Re: Traceroutes would be helpful. In Windows, go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt. Type 'tracert www.daniweb.com' into it and post the results. M.
Re: Sounds more like a graphics card issue (possibly drivers) than anything else - have you tried your graphics card vendor's web site to see if there are any newer versions and giving that a whirl?
Re: jack720 - you've definately ensured that both machines are set-up for ad-hoc rather than infrastructure mode? And have you enabled or disabled WEP/WPA/any other encryption protocols? If enabled, have you ensured that you're using the right key and phrases? M. |
The End.
