I'm wondering if this could be an MTU problem, as I remember reading something like happening before. So I've Googled and came across this interesting post on another site (with apologies to those who may recognise as their own posting, but we've got try and help the original poster haven't …
How easy is it to get its components? (I`m from South Africa) Do you know how their service are?
I do believe Dell have very decent South African support. In fact, I think their overall African presence is pretty good. I remember writing a proposal for a Ghanian re-insurance company …

I tend to use a combination of Spam Assassin at the server level, the default Outlook 2003 junk mail filters to catch anything that Spam Assassin may miss (which it has done, and Outlook has been superb at picking it up and sticking it in the Junk Folder) and a …

Even if you invest it a Core 2 Duo now, it certainly won't be obsolete when the quad-core stuff comes out. My theory is that they're going to be aiming at power users initially and then _slowly_ roll out different models/specifications across the board. Intel aren't stupid, and very much …

I can perhaps see WHY they're doing this - to stop people running up massive gambling debts - but it's a step in the wrong direction and implies that the US is becoming a Nanny state (okay, 50 of them, then). M.

Perhaps another thing you could try, if your router supports it, is uPnP. This makes it much easier for an application to "punch" the appropriate ports in the firewall automatically for you for a particular application. You'll need to look in your router's manual whether or not it's supported.. M.

Dual monitors are very useful for digital video editing - we have a few set-ups around here that are used precisely for that purpose. All NVidia Quadras or Geforce FXes. Twinned with Sony high-resolution 24" widescreen Trinitron monitors. Lovely jubbly. Regards, Martyn

Well, I for one would be interested. I work in Soho (NO, NO, NO - not THAT kind of work - I'm in the post-production business) so anywhere near there or Central London would be ideal for me. M.

A shame this couldn't have happened at the beginning of December last year - I was in New York attending the KongIsKing meet-up and the world premiere of King Kong itself... sadly all my spondoolicks for another overseas gathering has dried up for a long, long time :( M.

And try to talk to existing customers of the hosts you're eyeing up. Visit the hosts' customer forums if they have any and judge for yourself whether or not they're doing a good job. It pays to do research - as is mentioned in the above article. Regards, Martyn

Several thoughts: 1) What version of OS X are you running? Regardless of whether it's Panther, Tiger, etc. have you kept up to date with all the online updates? 2) Could it be a possible motherboard problem? I also assume you've tried resetting the PMU at least once? M.

Several things to check: 1) Some monitors have multiple inputs (usually VGA and DVI connectors) and have a switch to change between them. This can either by a physical switch or alternatively you've got to select the right input through a menu on the monitor. 2) If the monitor is …

As far as I'm aware (and I may be wrong about this - so anybody please feel to step in and give me a slap), dual-layer writing is NOT supported by Panther. You would need to upgrade to Tiger for that. M.

Definately worth doing. I'd also go as far as recommending buying the MPEG-2 component to play MPEG-2 files from within Quicktime. Yes, you could very well use DVD Player for that, but for the purposes of what I use Quicktime for, it saves having to keep faffing around with different …

CentOS is a decent distribution. It should be noted that you should be using the ia32e (EMT64) kernel rather than the x86_64 kernel if you're going down the CentOS 3.x route. I'm not too sure about Centos 4, though. M.

Well, Dells are very nice, but I much prefer the power of the Opteron. The problem is that there are still too few dedicated server providers that supply them. The next desktop machine will be a dual core Athlon64 x2 too. ;) M.

Do you intend to write an ASP/ASP.NET scripts? You'll need IIS if that's the case. If not, you could go for Apache. I've found IIS easy to set-up, but then again I also found Apache to be equally easy despite being entirely text-config based. I've also had eight years experience …
