try booting to your winxp cd and go recovery console and run a check disk , at the command prompt type in with out the "",and a space between the k and / "chkdsk /r"

it quite possible that some upgrade the cpu in the laptop ,if you google the motherboard model # it will take a duel core according to some of the results i read .

i think the biggest problem might be in how you accidentally installed the second winxp .did you accidentally create second partition for the second xp ,if not the linux will wipe bot winxp installs from the drive if you try to install it
