You said you disabled the startup programs. Did you use msconfig to do that? If not, use it and disable the programs and services that don't need to run on startup. Also, try updating your video driver too.

I have seen this problem when installing another firewall like Mcafee or Norton. Sometimes McAffee has been known to block when it should not. If you have McAfee installed trying turning off the block function. If you have Norton you might try uninstalling it and re installing it.

Do you have the NVIDIA GeForce 6100 video card? When you right click on your desktop|properies|settings|advance|adapter|adapter type... does it show your NVIDA video or a generic one? Sounds like your mother board may have died on you. The CMOS battery has probably failed and if your system was working OK before this happen than your CMOS battery might need to be replaced first before totally prononcing your motherboard as dead.

I believe that the Dell Inspiron 1000 came on the market in 2004. If this is the original battery with the laptop than it is time to replace it. I believe that the Dell Inspiron 1000 came with a 8-cell NiMH battery in it's cheapest configuration. This cheap battery type …

Yes you will need a dialup modem for dial internet access. Lucky for you your Dell 610 should already have a modem installed.....look for a RJ-11 port on the side of your laptop. Just plug the phone line into this port and configured your modem software for phone number...etc

Pop your case open and reseat your video card. If that has no good results then go for a new video card. If you have another PC than you might switch video cards to confirm that it is bad.
